Hundreds of cars streamed south of Japanese areas devastated by last week's earthquake and tsunami as a few dozen technicians battled to contain fires and radiation leaks at the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear power station. The 50 workers struggling to contain the fallout at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant faced two significant setbacks Wednesday - both of which appeared to increase the risk of a significant release of radiation into the atmosphere. As thick plumes of steam rose from the stricken Fukushima plant, Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary, Yukio Edano, said Wednesday morning local time that the containment vessel for reactor unit 3 -- one of the three reactors that had been active when the earthquake and tsunami struck last Friday -- may have been damaged, apparently in the explosion Monday that destroyed a portion of the building that houses it. The extent of the damage to the containment vessel -- the steel and concrete vaults that are the last line of defense against a major radiation leak -- was unclear. ...

White steam-like clouds drifted up from one reactor which, the government said, likely emitted the burst of radiation that led to the workers' withdrawal. The plant's operator reported a fire at another reactor for the second time in two days. "They are up against a wall ... this is not just one Three Mile Island. It's effectively four," Sharon Squassoni, an expert on nuclear issues at the Center for Strategic and International Studies said. "The anxiety and anger being felt by people in Fukushima have reached a boiling point," the governor of Fukushima prefecture, Yuhei Sato, fumed in an interview with NHK. He criticized preparations for an evacuation if conditions worsen and said centers already housing people moved from nearby the plant do not have enough hot meals and basic necessities. ...

 Soldiers and riot police used tear gas and armored vehicles to drive out hundreds of anti-government protesters occupying a landmark square in Bahrain's capital. Demonstrators say at least two people were killed. ...

King Hamad delegated Bahrain Defense Force Commander-in-Chief Marshal Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa "to take necessary measures to protect national security and people's safety." The state of emergency was proclaimed "amid a serious security escalation which was threatening people's lives and damaging their interests, livelihoods and properties." Forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gadhafi attacked rebels in the western city of Misrata with heavy artillery Wednesday, killing at least four people. Witnesses say the rebel-held city has come under attack from the east and south. Government forces have also pounded the eastern city of Ajdabiya, but reports from rebels there say they have repelled pro-Gadhafi advances and are in almost total control of the city. The rebels disputed a Libyan state television report Tuesday that pro-government forces had regained control of Ajdabiya. ...

The acquittal of Raymond Davis came when relatives of the dead men pardoned him in court. They confirmed to the judge overseeing the case that they had received compensation, known as "blood money." ...

Some 800 staff have now been withdrawn from the plant, leaving just 50 workers struggling to cool the reactors with sea water - presumably at significant personal risk. At 11.00am local time, Japan's Prime Minister Naoto Kan acknowledged on national TV that radiation had spread from the plant, with " a very high risk of further leakage." People living within 30 kilometres of the plant have been told to stay inside, close windows, and switch off their air conditioning. ...

More than 2000 tsunami victims were found on the shores of Miyagi prefecture, the area worst affected by the disaster. And distraught relatives of those who are missing searched in vain for their loved ones. Authorities in Miyagi fear more than 10,000 people may have died in their area alone when the tsunami struck on Friday. Yesterday, about 1000 bodies were found washed up on the province's Ojika peninsula. A similar number were found at Minamisanriku, the wiped-out town where 10,000 are feared dead. ...

 AND TEXT. In a nationally televised statement Tuesday, Naoto Kan said radiation had spread from the four stricken reactors of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant along Japan's northeastern coast. He urged people to stay calm, and said technicians and staff at the power plant were doing everything they could to cool down the reactors, which have experienced breakdowns in the vital cooling system. Concerns about radiation from leaking nuclear reactors is causing anxiety for people in Japan, including visitors trying to flee the area devastated by the earthquake and tsunami. ...

Two months after the executives were sacked for supposedly selling secrets about its electric car program, Renault issued a statement emphasising that it was committed to restoring "their honor in the public eye." The statement came shortly after the arrest of former defence intelligence officer Dominique Gevrey, as he boarded a plane for the west African state of Guinea. On Sunday evening he was placed under judicial investigation for organised fraud. His lawyer insists he is innocent and has accused Renault of "paranoia." The consequences for Renault could be very serious. ...

On Tuesday, the Los Angeles County District Attorney charged Gerhartsreiter, 50, in a 1980s murder case, alleging he killed John Sohus of San Marino, Calif. The DA also filed documents seeking Gerhartsreiter's extradition from Massachusetts, where he's serving a sentence after being convicted in his daughter's abduction. His 2008 arrest prompted authorities to explore his possible role in the long-cold case of the 1985 disappearance of John and wife Linda Sohus. ...

Carrie Shafer, 38, from Kentucky, resigned from her job as a biology teacher at duPont Manual High School after being arrested by police in a parked car. An arrest report revealed the blonde mother-of-two was in a compromising position with an unnamed 17-year-old student from her school in Louisville. Police said the windows of the car were 'steamed up' and both occupants were partially clothed. They also found evidence of sex between the pair outside the car, including condoms. ...

While radioactivity could reach the United States from the quake-hit Fukushima plant, the levels would not be high enough to cause major health problems, said the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Some experts disagreed, notably pointing to the west-east jet stream, but NRC -- which was asked by Japan on Monday to send nuclear experts to deal with the crisis -- said even the Pacific island state of Hawaii faced little risk. "Right now it's quite possible that there could be some radiation floating over the United States. But we don't think that it would be particularly harmful... even in a worst case scenario," spokesman David McIntyre said ...

Perhaps the most dangerous fault line in the United States stretches from the northern part of California, up along the coast of Oregon and Washington, and into Canadian waters. If, as in the 9.0 magnitude event in Japan, one tectonic plate in Cascadia gets forced beneath another, it could result in a quake that reduces many of the buildings near the coast to rubble. It would take less than 30 minutes for the subsequent tsunami to reach shore. The last major earthquake to hit in the region was in the year 1700. "We're overdue," warns geotechnical engineer Yumei Wang of the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries. ...

 AND TEXT. Days after the deadly tour bus crash in the Bronx, a bus heading from Chinatown to Philadelphia crashed on the New Jersey Turnpike last night - killing two people. The driver, Wei Wang -- a 50-year-old Taiwanese national from Forest Hills, Queens -- was thrown through the windshield and killed. Another man, Troy Nguyen, 20, of Royersford, PA died at the hospital. Forty other passengers were also hospitalized. ...

With a current temporary spending bill due to expire at midnight on Friday, lawmakers voted 271-158 in favor of the Republican-crafted measure, which headed to the US Senate where it was expected to pass. Fifty-four House Republicans -- including many backed by the archconservative "Tea Party" movement -- broke with their leaders to oppose the measure, joining 104 Democrats. Eighty-five Democrats joined 186 Republicans to muscle the legislation -- which funds the US government to April 8 -- to passage. ...

The House Energy and Commerce Committee voted 34-19 Tuesday to approve legislation that would block the Environmental Protection Agency from regulating greenhouse gases and gut California's landmark limits on those emissions from cars. The legislation is a broadside against the EPA, which has become a lightning rod for anti-regulation Republicans now in charge of the House. ...

The House Rules Committee will meet in "an emergency" session Wednesday to consider a bill that would permanently bar NPR or its affiliate stations from receiving federal funds. If it passes the committee, as expected, the bill could make it to the House floor later this week. Republicans already voted to eliminate all federal support for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting for the current fiscal year, which helps public stations buy NPR programming, but the provision was not incorporated into the continuing agreements that have kept the government funded. The new bill, sponsored by Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-Colo.), would allow public stations to take federal funds from the CPB, but would prohibit them from buying programs from the broadcaster formerly known as National Public Radio with the money. ...

Many Republican conservatives -- notably some elected for the first time last year -- have grown increasingly frustrated over plans to keep the government running for another three weeks, saying they want longer-term, more serious spending cuts. "When I was elected last year, it was to change the culture in Washington. The status quo here is, 'Take your time. We'll get to it.' We don't have the time to wait around," said freshman Rep. Tim Huelskamp, R-Kansas, who plans to vote plans to vote "no" on Tuesday on keeping the government funded through April 8. ...

Dennis Kucinich (D.-Ohio) he voted for the health-care law because he saw it as a necessary "platform" for building toward a single-payer health-care system in the United States. Ater the event at the National Press Club, Conyers said, "What we're trying to do is insure everybody, right? We're trying to insure more people, not less and so it's my feeling that the rising costs that are going on will not be solved by getting rid of people's health insurance--that throws them into emergency rooms and charity and other things. That's why HR 676 is our ultimate solution--is that everybody's insured from birth on and that's what we're still fighting for." ...

In a statement, Barbour's office said last night that the governor "has accepted Dan Turner's resignation as press secretary. Laura Hipp will now serve in that capacity." In an e-mail Turner sent Friday, he said: "Otis Redding posthumously received a gold record for his single, (Sittin' on) The Dock of the Bay. (Not a big hit in Japan right now.)" ...

A review of federal records indicates that nearly a quarter of America's nuclear reactors in 13 states share the same design of the ill-fated Japanese reactors. The plants, called Mark I Boiling Water Reactors, were designed by General Electric. GE, which is donating $5 million to Japan for its relief effort, said Monday it was too early to assess what produced the problems at the complex. The Japanese crisis, and the potential scrutiny of America's reactors, comes as the nuclear industry seemingly had won a new lease on life. After decades as an orphan technology shuttered by the meltdown at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania, rising concerns about global warming, the need to curb carbon pollution and a quest for more electric production to fuel economic expansion buoyed nuclear fortunes. Now, that all seems at risk. ...

Aaron Tobey claims in a civil rights lawsuit that in December he was handcuffed and held for about 90 minutes by the Transportation Security Administration at the Richmond International Airport after he began removing his clothing to display on his chest a magic-marker protest of airport security measures. Among other things, the federal lawsuit claims wrongful detention and a breach of the First Amendment and Fourth Amendment. "He was held there for 90 minutes, and handcuffed behind his back," his attorney, James Knicely said. ...

Photos published online show a girl, said to be Hudgens, fully naked and posed provocatively. Although the new images only emerged last night they are alleged to be from the same set which emerged online in 2007. Hudgens's lawyer Christopher Wong said, "It is particularly disturbing that whoever got a hold of these private photos seem to be intent on illegally leaking them out over a long period of time." ...

A film featuring Charlie Sheen's retired porn star girlfriend, Bree Olson, is facing a legal hurdle before it even begins to shoot, with a former producer suing another producer for $15,000. Ryan McCarty was fired because he supposedly partied too hard, despite securing the film's lead stars. "I was asked to get a few adult film stars involved in the movie since I am friends with a few. Bahrain was the first place in the Middle East to hit oil. But the find, at Well Number One in 1931, was the Gulf kingdom's only discovery to date. The commodity makes up only about 15% of its economic output, and the economy is reliant on other industries, chiefly financial services and tourism. Now this previously calm state is wracked by mass demonstrations, an influx of Saudi and other foreign troops, and a violent crackdown by Bahraini security forces. The disaster caused a 6.2 per cent drop in Japan's Nikkei share index, wiping $144 billion off stocks and shares traded there. That in turn dragged share prices to a six-week low in many countries. Andre Bakhos, the director of market analytics at Lek Securities in New York, said: "The earthquake could have great implications on the global economic front. If you shut down Japan, there could be a global recession." Among the major businesses that could not operate factories were Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Canon, Nestle, Sony and Panasonic. ...

A reader who wishes to remain anonymous sent in this criticism:

Mr. March, You linked the video of Hillary Clinton having what has been referred to as an 'outburst' on your site, yet, you did not explain the context. You omitted the truth and presented the situation as another crazy Clinton moment. You not only misportrayed the situation, you lost an opportunity to share/address the plight of women who have no rights in their country. I have been a long time reader of your March Report and have shared the Report with many people. I wrote to you addressing the Clinton video and have seen no retraction or explanation. I won't be referring anyone to this page anymore. My belief and trust that you maintain objectivity and research all sides has been permanently altered recently. Consevative or not, you have always seemed to work at being fair and true to journalism. I now am seeing you differently.

Robert Jay March Responds:

This reader has mischaracterized the report. In fact, we went out of way to add clarity to the situation. The copy proved by WMAQ-TV, the televsion station which provide the report through one of our syndicators, said "A Congolese university student seems to presume that Bill Clinton's opinion is more important than the current Secretary of State's." In order to portray the situation accurately, we rewrote the copy to read as follows (emphasis added): "As a result of a translator's error, a Congolese university student appears to presume that Bill Clinton's opinion is more important than the current Secretary of State's. Hillary explodes, and hilarity ensues. Oh, those wacky, wacky Clintons." That was all the information that was available on August 11, 2009, when we ran the story. Witty retort aside, we went out of our way to clarify the report. Further details from the State Department and the White House did not become available until the following day.

Another reader, who wish to be referred to by the nom de plume "Needles," has an unusual take on the Certifi-Gate crisis:

The birthers need to step back and consider the consequences of their actions. If Mr. Obama were to be declared ineligible, there are several possible outcomes. They could remove him from office and install Joe Biden as President. The argument would be made that if Mr. Obama was not eligible to run for President, then the ticket is invalid as well and Joe Biden should not be Vice President. The next person in the order of succession would be Speaker of the House; Nancy Pelosi. Because no eligible candidate received a majority of electoral votes, the selection of the President could be thrown into the House. Speaker Nancy Pelosi, would then be king-maker. The choices are Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi or someone Nancy Pelosi picks. Maybe it is best to leave the birth certificate matter alone.

Robert Jay March Responds:

Mr. Obama being declared ineligible does not legally invalidate Biden's election, provided he is qualified. Even if it did, the Constitution is too important to ignore; it is all that separates us from tyranny. Regardless of the consequences, if in fact Mr. Obama is ineligible, he must be removed. That said, all we have thus far is the preponderance of evidence leading to a likely conclusion, not conclusive facts. That is why the revelation of the long-form birth certificate is so important.

Finally, a third reader who wish to be referred to by the nom de plume "unihawker," writes:

Dear Mr. March, I was watching TV the other night and they showed a clip of Obama in Kenya during his trip there during the campaign. I am not sure if it was just some Freudian slip or not, but he said as he was waiving to the people greeting him, "Thank you, it is great to be back home". My question was, If he was not born in that country why would he call it home?

Robert Jay March Responds:

Good question, for which I have no answer. If this report is correct, it is yet another contribution to the preponderance of evidence that implies Mr. Obama is ineligible. A copy of the long form birth certificate would cost Mr. Obama $12; thus far he has spent $1.3 Million to avoid producing it. As in any investigation, follow the money: in this case, what money is being spent on to conceal.
