People living within 30 kilometres of the plant have been told to stay inside, close windows, and switch off their air conditioning. ...

More than 2000 tsunami victims were found on the shores of Miyagi prefecture, the area worst affected by the disaster. And distraught relatives of those who are missing searched in vain for their loved ones. Authorities in Miyagi fear more than 10,000 people may have died in their area alone when the tsunami struck on Friday. Yesterday, about 1000 bodies were found washed up on the province's Ojika peninsula. A similar number were found at Minamisanriku, the wiped-out town where 10,000 are feared dead. ...

Two months after the executives were sacked for supposedly selling secrets about its electric car program, Renault issued a statement emphasising that it was committed to restoring "their honor in the public eye." The statement came shortly after the arrest of former defence intelligence officer Dominique Gevrey, as he boarded a plane for the west African state of Guinea. On Sunday evening he was placed under judicial investigation for organised fraud. His lawyer insists he is innocent and has accused Renault of "paranoia." Police have so far confirmed 1,597 deaths and 1,481 people missing across the affected areas in north-eastern and eastern Japan. "The earthquake, tsunami and the nuclear incident have been the biggest crisis Japan has encountered in the 65 years since the end of World War II," Prime Minister Naoto Kan told a news conference today. "We're under scrutiny on whether we, the Japanese people, can overcome this crisis." The earthquake, which yesterday was upgraded to a 9.0 magnitude from 8.9, left almost 2 million households without power in the freezing north and about 1.4 million without running water, the government said. ...

Rescue workers from more than a dozen countries searched ravaged northeastern coastal cities on Monday for survivors of a massive earthquake and tsunami, as an international effort to help Japan cope with its multiple disasters gathered pace. Some 70 countries have offered assistance in an outpouring of solidarity with Japan, with help coming not only from allies like the United States but also countries with more strained relations like China, and even from the Afghan city of Kandahar. ...

Rebel forces in Libya say they have re-taken the eastern oil town of Brega, capturing a number of elite government troops and killing others. The statement has not been independently confirmed. It came hours after the rebels had themselves been driven from the town by air and ground attacks by forces loyal to Libyan leader Col Muammar Gadhafi. ...

While radioactivity could reach the United States from the quake-hit Fukushima plant, the levels would not be high enough to cause major health problems, said the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Some experts disagreed, notably pointing to the west-east jet stream, but NRC -- which was asked by Japan on Monday to send nuclear experts to deal with the crisis -- said even the Pacific island state of Hawaii faced little risk. "Right now it's quite possible that there could be some radiation floating over the United States. But we don't think that it would be particularly harmful... even in a worst case scenario," spokesman David McIntyre said ...

Perhaps the most dangerous fault line in the United States stretches from the northern part of California, up along the coast of Oregon and Washington, and into Canadian waters. If, as in the 9.0 magnitude event in Japan, one tectonic plate in Cascadia gets forced beneath another, it could result in a quake that reduces many of the buildings near the coast to rubble. It would take less than 30 minutes for the subsequent tsunami to reach shore. The last major earthquake to hit in the region was in the year 1700. "We're overdue," warns geotechnical engineer Yumei Wang of the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries. ...

The Hawaiian capital Honolulu is nearly 3,800 miles (6,100 km) from the epicenter of Friday's quake. It brought six-foot waves to Maui, where harbors remained closed Friday night, and brought 8.1-foot waves to Crescent City, California, about 15 miles north of where the only known U.S. fatality occurred. California Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency for four coastal counties Friday as the ocean surge inundated beaches, ports and harbors and prompted the opening of emergency shelters. ...

The disastrous chain of events began at about 7:45 p.m. when a 27-year-old man -- dressed in Army fatigues and a white hockey mask much like the knife-wielding maniac Jason from the "Friday the 13th" slasher flicks -- began running around the streets of Massapequa Park, officials and witnesses said. ...

 Police were investigating a bus driver's claim that he was driven off a highway before his bus slid into a sign pole that sheared it end to end, killing 14 people and leaving others maimed. ...

Investigators said the black box will reveal if the driver, Ophadell Williams, was speeding, and video should indicate if he fell asleep at the wheel, or support his initial claim he was sideswiped by a big rig. A truck driver contacted state police Sunday, but claimed he was behind the bus, not alongside it, and saw it weaving and then swerve off southbound lanes of Interstate 95. Christopher Hart, vice chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, said the truck driver's rig was impounded and was being inspected for damage. The tractor-trailer showed no visible signs of colliding with the bus, but it has to be checked more closely and taken apart, a police source said. ...

Don Birch opened the tavern in 1978 and began serving free meals on Sundays in 1981. News of his generosity spread and, eventually, the Saw Mill Tavern was packed every Sunday. In a statement, Barbour's office said last night that the governor "has accepted Dan Turner's resignation as press secretary. Laura Hipp will now serve in that capacity." A review of federal records indicates that nearly a quarter of America's nuclear reactors in 13 states share the same design of the ill-fated Japanese reactors. The plants, called Mark I Boiling Water Reactors, were designed by General Electric. GE, which is donating $5 million to Japan for its relief effort, said Monday it was too early to assess what produced the problems at the complex. The Japanese crisis, and the potential scrutiny of America's reactors, comes as the nuclear industry seemingly had won a new lease on life. After decades as an orphan technology shuttered by the meltdown at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania, rising concerns about global warming, the need to curb carbon pollution and a quest for more electric production to fuel economic expansion buoyed nuclear fortunes. Now, that all seems at risk. ...

Aaron Tobey claims in a civil rights lawsuit that in December he was handcuffed and held for about 90 minutes by the Transportation Security Administration at the Richmond International Airport after he began removing his clothing to display on his chest a magic-marker protest of airport security measures. Among other things, the federal lawsuit claims wrongful detention and a breach of the First Amendment and Fourth Amendment. "He was held there for 90 minutes, and handcuffed behind his back," his attorney, James Knicely said. ...

The abrupt resignation came after he criticized the Defense Department's treatment of Manning, who is being held in a military prison accused of giving classified documents to WikiLeaks. Speaking at an MIT seminar last week, Crowley said "What is being done to Bradley Manning is ridiculous and counterproductive and stupid on the part of the Department of Defense." ...

Development of nuclear as an energy alternative has been getting a huge political push in recent months, with both the Obama administration and the new Republican majority in the House favoring investment in the field, including restarting construction on nuclear power plants that have been waiting in the wings since the Three Mile Island incident in the '70s. That new attention has, in turn, raised the question of what's to happen with Yucca Mountain -- Nevada's potential waste-dump site that hasn't yet been approved by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, but hasn't been scratched either. ...

Barack Obama and other top Democrats have been quick to lavish praise on former Massachusetts Republican Gov. Mitt Romney for signing the sweeping health care law in 2006 that laid the groundwork for Obama's national health care overhaul. The disaster caused a 6.2 per cent drop in Japan's Nikkei share index, wiping $144 billion off stocks and shares traded there. That in turn dragged share prices to a six-week low in many countries. Andre Bakhos, the director of market analytics at Lek Securities in New York, said: "The earthquake could have great implications on the global economic front. If you shut down Japan, there could be a global recession." Among the major businesses that could not operate factories were Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Canon, Nestle, Sony and Panasonic. ...

The selling was spread among local and foreign investors alike, and was especially heavy in the futures market. While bargain-buying late in the session helped the Nikkei 225 Average off its lows, and key support at 8000 held, analysts said the mood remains wary. "It's panic selling. It's not only foreign investors -- everybody just wants to dump shares," said Retela Crea Securities general manager Yosuke Shimizu. ...

National Weather Agency Refutes Gore's Claim Recent Snowstorms Caused By Global Warming

NOAA posted the following article at its Climate Watch magazine: "This is the second consecutive very wintry winter in the eastern United States. Last year, NOAA climate scientists concluded the record-breaking snowstorms most likely resulted from the combination of two natural climate patterns: El Nino and the Arctic Oscillation. So what about this year? Last winter's El Nino has flipped to La Nina, as temperatures in the eastern tropical Pacific have been cooler than normal. But the Arctic Oscillation seems to be in a repeat pattern, with conditions this December and January very similar to last winter, according to Deke Arndt, Chief of the Climate Monitoring Branch at NOAA's National Climatic Data Center." Not at all surprisingly, the man that just this past Friday accused Rush Limbaugh, Fox News, and the Wall Street Journal of being part of a conspiracy to mislead people about the dangers of manmade global warming was once again guilty of it himself. ...

Climate Change Claims Melt Away

In 2007, the U.N. said the Himalayan glaciers will be gone by 2035 due to man-made global warming. Turns out, though, that the claim was nonsense. It was not based on scientific research but on one scientist's guesswork, which was lifted from a telephone interview. New research indicates that half of the glaciers in the Himalaya's Karakoram range are advancing. Scientists from the University of California Santa Barbara and the University of Potsdam, who cited "erroneous reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change," strongly suggest that the "settled" science is not so clear. ...

Oh No, Not Another Unbiased Documentary About 'Climate Change'

The "consensus" on 'Climate Change' exaggerates the number of scientists who believe in Man Made Global Warming and it grotesquely underestimates the number who have many good reasons for suspecting that there is far, far more to "Climate Change" than anthropogenic CO2. What's more such "consensus" as there is is an artificial construct. It has not been subjected to the rigour of an open or even semi-open market. It is the creation, almost entirely, of politically-driven funding from US government, from various UN bodies, from the EU, from left-leaning charitable foundations on a scale unprecedented in the history of science. So far, in real terms, no less than five times the amount of the Manhattan Project has been squandered on research into AGW. For that kind of money you can buy an awful lot of scientists prepared to suspend any belief they might have that global warming is anything other than man-made. ...

A reader who wishes to remain anonymous sent in this criticism:

Mr. March, You linked the video of Hillary Clinton having what has been referred to as an 'outburst' on your site, yet, you did not explain the context. You omitted the truth and presented the situation as another crazy Clinton moment. You not only misportrayed the situation, you lost an opportunity to share/address the plight of women who have no rights in their country. I have been a long time reader of your March Report and have shared the Report with many people. I wrote to you addressing the Clinton video and have seen no retraction or explanation. I won't be referring anyone to this page anymore. My belief and trust that you maintain objectivity and research all sides has been permanently altered recently. Consevative or not, you have always seemed to work at being fair and true to journalism. I now am seeing you differently.

Robert Jay March Responds:

This reader has mischaracterized the report. In fact, we went out of way to add clarity to the situation. The copy proved by WMAQ-TV, the televsion station which provide the report through one of our syndicators, said "A Congolese university student seems to presume that Bill Clinton's opinion is more important than the current Secretary of State's." In order to portray the situation accurately, we rewrote the copy to read as follows (emphasis added): "As a result of a translator's error, a Congolese university student appears to presume that Bill Clinton's opinion is more important than the current Secretary of State's. Hillary explodes, and hilarity ensues. Oh, those wacky, wacky Clintons." That was all the information that was available on August 11, 2009, when we ran the story. Witty retort aside, we went out of our way to clarify the report. Further details from the State Department and the White House did not become available until the following day.

Another reader, who wish to be referred to by the nom de plume "Needles," has an unusual take on the Certifi-Gate crisis:

The birthers need to step back and consider the consequences of their actions. If Mr. Obama were to be declared ineligible, there are several possible outcomes. They could remove him from office and install Joe Biden as President. The argument would be made that if Mr. Obama was not eligible to run for President, then the ticket is invalid as well and Joe Biden should not be Vice President. The next person in the order of succession would be Speaker of the House; Nancy Pelosi. Because no eligible candidate received a majority of electoral votes, the selection of the President could be thrown into the House. Speaker Nancy Pelosi, would then be king-maker. The choices are Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi or someone Nancy Pelosi picks. Maybe it is best to leave the birth certificate matter alone.

Robert Jay March Responds:

Mr. Obama being declared ineligible does not legally invalidate Biden's election, provided he is qualified. Even if it did, the Constitution is too important to ignore; it is all that separates us from tyranny. Regardless of the consequences, if in fact Mr. Obama is ineligible, he must be removed. That said, all we have thus far is the preponderance of evidence leading to a likely conclusion, not conclusive facts. That is why the revelation of the long-form birth certificate is so important.

Finally, a third reader who wish to be referred to by the nom de plume "unihawker," writes:

Dear Mr. March, I was watching TV the other night and they showed a clip of Obama in Kenya during his trip there during the campaign. I am not sure if it was just some Freudian slip or not, but he said as he was waiving to the people greeting him, "Thank you, it is great to be back home". My question was, If he was not born in that country why would he call it home?

Robert Jay March Responds:

Good question, for which I have no answer. If this report is correct, it is yet another contribution to the preponderance of evidence that implies Mr. Obama is ineligible. A copy of the long form birth certificate would cost Mr. Obama $12; thus far he has spent $1.3 Million to avoid producing it. As in any investigation, follow the money: in this case, what money is being spent on to conceal.
