Keith Thursby -- Los Angeles Times

Morello died Saturday at Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth, N.J., said his wife, Jean. No cause was given. The Dave Brubeck Quartet, with Brubeck on piano, Paul Desmond on alto saxophone, Eugene Wright on bass and Morello on drums, became successful beginning in the late 1950s exploring unusual time signatures. The album "Time Out," which included "Take Five" with Morello's memorable solo and "Blue Rondo a la Turk," became one of the most popular jazz albums ever. ...

"Secret Fallout: Low-Level Radiation From Hiroshima To Three Mile Island"

Dr. Ernest Sternglass -- Professor of Radiology, University of Pittsburgh Medical School; Adjunct Professor, Department of History and Philosophy of Science, Indiana University, Bloomington

This is the full text of this book, made available by the author, which can be downloaded in several formats or read on-line. From the introduction: "In my opinion the entire nuclear enterprise, both power and weapons, represents a wrong turn for humanity, a development that cannot be tamed, that remains life-threatening not only in all its present manifestations, but all future developments that have been contemplated. Meanwhile the public is subjected to a continuous barrage of propaganda and misinformation designed to reconcile it to an increasingly problematical and expensive support of both nuclear power and weapons." ...

How Joan Crawford Ruthlessly Used Her Body To Control Co-Stars, Directors, And Anyone Who Could Advance Her Career

Donald Spoto -- Daily Mail (UK)

Rumours of Joan Crawford's freewheeling sex life had circulated Hollywood for many years. Even so, director Vincent Sherman was taken off guard when in 1949, as part of preparations for a movie called The Damned Don't Cry, she invited him to a studio screening room to watch some of her previous work. As the two sat in the dark, she removed her clothes and initiated an afternoon of wild passion. This article is adapted from "Possessed: The Life of Joan Crawford" by Donald Spoto.

Surprises From Donald Rumsfeld's Memoir. Did Saddam Hussein Target His Kids?

Daniel Bates -- Daily Mail (UK)

Donald Rumsfeld has revealed that Saddam Hussein took out a $60million hit on his daughters in revenge for the slaying of his two sons. The ex-U.S. Secretary of Defense said that the former Iraqi dictator offered the bounty to anybody who brought him both girls' heads. He was given the warning in a October 2003 meeting by which time U.S. forces had killed Saddam's sons Uday and Qusay and his 14-year-old grandson Mustapha. Mr Rumsfeld's comments came as part of a promotion push to accompany his new book "Known and Unknown: A Memoir" which detail his time in office until he retired in December 2006.

Stephen Hawking vs. God

Jim Wilson -- Redding Record Searchlight

Hawking proclaims two mutually excluding propositions in his book, "The Grand Design" according to fellow physicist Dr. Ben Wiker. On the one hand he declares that all existing theories of the origins of the universe are as subjective as they are non-comprehensive. On the other he states that these theories are comprehensive enough - and objective enough - to prove that God neither exists nor is necessary for the existence of everything else. The problem? You cannot have it both ways. If a theory is subjective it is tainted by having been processed through an intellectual lens that sees only what the viewer is prepared in advance to admit. Likewise, if it is not comprehensive it cannot entertain all of the relevant data and so cannot make comprehensive statements. But the declaration that God does not exist is both an objective and a comprehensive statement. It is -- in this case -- a desperate attempt to escape the prime implication of the Big Bang, that there is out there a Big Banger.

Radiation Spike As Crisis Intensifies At Fukushima Dai-Ichi Nuclear Plant After Third Explosion

New Scientist

Some 800 staff have now been withdrawn from the plant, leaving just 50 workers struggling to cool the reactors with sea water - presumably at significant personal risk. At 11.00am local time, Japan's Prime Minister Naoto Kan acknowledged on national TV that radiation had spread from the plant, with " a very high risk of further leakage." People living within 30 kilometres of the plant have been told to stay inside, close windows, and switch off their air conditioning. ...

Chris Musson -- Daily Record (UK)

More than 2000 tsunami victims were found on the shores of Miyagi prefecture, the area worst affected by the disaster. And distraught relatives of those who are missing searched in vain for their loved ones. Authorities in Miyagi fear more than 10,000 people may have died in their area alone when the tsunami struck on Friday. Yesterday, about 1000 bodies were found washed up on the province's Ojika peninsula. A similar number were found at Minamisanriku, the wiped-out town where 10,000 are feared dead. ...

He urged people to stay calm, and said technicians and staff at the power plant were doing everything they could to cool down the reactors, which have experienced breakdowns in the vital cooling system.  U.S. West Coast: On Frontline From Nuclear Cloud?

Michael Thurston -- Agence France-Presse (FR)

While radioactivity could reach the United States from the quake-hit Fukushima plant, the levels would not be high enough to cause major health problems, said the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Some experts disagreed, notably pointing to the west-east jet stream, but NRC -- which was asked by Japan on Monday to send nuclear experts to deal with the crisis -- said even the Pacific island state of Hawaii faced little risk. "Right now it's quite possible that there could be some radiation floating over the United States. But we don't think that it would be particularly harmful... even in a worst case scenario," spokesman David McIntyre said ...

Experts Say Pacific Northwest "Overdue" For Major Quake

Brian Montopoli -- CBS News

Perhaps the most dangerous fault line in the United States stretches from the northern part of California, up along the coast of Oregon and Washington, and into Canadian waters. If, as in the 9.0 magnitude event in Japan, one tectonic plate in Cascadia gets forced beneath another, it could result in a quake that reduces many of the buildings near the coast to rubble. It would take less than 30 minutes for the subsequent tsunami to reach shore. The last major earthquake to hit in the region was in the year 1700. "We're overdue," warns geotechnical engineer Yumei Wang of the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries. ...

YEST As U.S. Tsunami Damage Measured, Emergency Declared In California Counties

CNN

Video AND TEXT. One person was reported dead and numerous boats and harbors suffered damage in the United States after the tsunami triggered by the massive earthquake off Japan swept across the Pacific Ocean at jet speed Friday. The tsunami struck the Hawaiian Islands shortly after 3:07 a.m. Friday (8:07 a.m. ET) -- less than eight hours after the magnitude 8.9 earthquake struck off Japan, where nearly 300 people had been reported killed by early Saturday. The Hawaiian capital Honolulu is nearly 3,800 miles (6,100 km) from the epicenter of Friday's quake. It brought six-foot waves to Maui, where harbors remained closed Friday night, and brought 8.1-foot waves to Crescent City, California, about 15 miles north of where the only known U.S. fatality occurred. California Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency for four coastal counties Friday as the ocean surge inundated beaches, ports and harbors and prompted the opening of emergency shelters. ...

A truck driver contacted state police Sunday, but claimed he was behind the bus, not alongside it, and saw it weaving and then swerve off southbound lanes of Interstate 95. According to Paul Andrews, Ph.D., and J. Anderson Thomson, M.D., depression is widely experienced by 30-50 percent of the population at some point in their lives. This monopolization of the particle surface suggested that other proteins have very little room to bind to HDL and probably have to interact with the protein itself, which could explain how apolipoprotein A-I plays such a dominant role in HDL function and its protective effects. ...

Certifi-Gate! America In Captivity

New Hampshire May Seek Birth Record From Presidential Filers

Norma Love -- Associated Press

Election Law Chairman David Bates said his committee will consider a bill Wednesday to require candidates to provide a birth certificate and affidavit swearing they are at least 35 years old and have lived in the United States for 14 years, as called for in the U.S. Constitution to qualify for the presidency. "They need to produce a certified copy of the long form of their birth certificate and an affidavit swearing to residency," the Windham Republican said Tuesday. [Editor's Note: The linked article states as a fact, "Obama was born in Hawaii." This is an assertion that remains open to debate, as the dozens of stories on our Certifi-Gate pages detail.] ...

Georgia Bill Would Require Citizenship Proof For Presidential And Vice Presidential Candidates

United Press International

The "Presidential Eligibility Assurance Act" would require presidential and vice presidential candidates must provide "adequate evidence" of their eligibility to the Georgia Secretary of State's office before they can be included on the state's ballot, the bills' summary said. The bill is sponsored by Republican Rep. Mark Hatfield. Hatfield said he wasn't a "birther" but a Constitutionalist, adding he thinks evidence of Obama's birth never has been made public. ...

Supreme Court To Give Obama Eligibility Case 2nd Conference

Bob Unruh -- World Net Daily

In a stunning move, the U.S. Supreme Court has scheduled another "conference" on a legal challenge to Barack Obama's eligibility to occupy the Oval Office, but officials there are not answering questions about whether two justices given their jobs by Obama will participate. The court has confirmed that it has distributed a petition for rehearing in the case brought by attorney John Hemenway on behalf of retired Col. Gregory Hollister and it will be the subject of a conference on March 4. It was in January that the court denied, without comment, a request for a hearing on the arguments. But the attorney at the time had submitted a motion for Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, who were given their jobs by Obama, to recuse. Should Obama ultimately be shown to have been ineligible for the office, his actions, including his appointments, at least would be open to challenge and question. ...

Now, Chris Matthews Says Obama Doesn't Have Long-Form Birth Certificate

Bob Unruh -- World Net Daily

Video AND TEXT. MSNBC's "Hardball" host Chris Matthews, who earlier announced he is the "enemy of birthers" but said even so he thinks Barack Obama should release his birth certificate, now has suggested that the online, computer-generated image of a Certification of Live Birth from Hawaii is the only document Obama has. Earlier, he was addressing Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie's statement that he was going to chase down Obama's original state birth certificate to prove his eligibility. At the time, Matthews said, "I don't understand why doesn't the president just say send me a copy right now ... let's get this crappy story dead." Abercrombie later said, according to his friend radio personality Mike Evans, that the document doesn't exist and expressed concern that the controversy will be a major issue for Obama during his planned 2012 presidential re-election campaign. Evans related how Abercrombie had taken over the governor's office assuming he'd be able to clear things up, but then couldn't find the records he was seeking. "Abercrombie was probably more shocked than anybody," Evans said. ...

Hawaii Lawmakers Want Release Of Obama Birth Information

Mark Niesse -- Associated Press

Anyone would be able to get a copy of Barack Obama's birth records for a $100 fee under a bill introduced in the state Legislature that backers hope will finally dispel claims he was born elsewhere. The bill would change a privacy law barring the release of birth records unless the requester is someone with a tangible interest, such as a close family member. The measure was introduced by five Democrats but has not yet been scheduled for a public hearing, a required step before it can move forward. A decision on considering the bill will be made by the House's Democratic leadership and committee chairmen. ...

Hawaii Official Signs Affidavit Declaring Obama Birth Certificate Does Not Exist

Jerome R. Corsi -- World Net Daily

Former Hawaii elections clerk Tim Adams has now signed an affidavit swearing he was told by his supervisors in Hawaii that no long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate existed for Barack Obama Jr. in Hawaii and that neither Queens Medical Center nor Kapi'olani Medical Center in Honolulu had any record of Obama having been born in their medical facilities. "During the course of my employment," Adams swears in the affidavit, "I became aware that many requests were being made to the City and County of Honolulu Elections Division, the Hawaii Office of Elections, and the Hawaii Department of Health from around the country to obtain a copy of then-Senator Barack Obama's long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate." Adams' affidavit continues, "Senior officers in the City and County of Honolulu Elections Division told me on multiple occasions that no Hawaii long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate existed for Senator Obama in the Hawaii Department of Health and there was no record that any such document had ever been on file in the Hawaii Department of Health or any other branch or department of the Hawaii government." ...

What Has Obama Said About His Own Birth?

Jack Cashill -- American Thinker

In his 1995 memoir Dreams from My Father, Obama made the same claim. "He had left Hawaii back in 1963," he wrote of Obama Sr., "when I was only two years old." When Obama wrote this in Dreams, he may have been relating what he had himself been told. By 2009, he knew better, but so vested was he in the story, and so useful had it been in his rise, that he continued to dissemble, even before millions of schoolchildren. There are clues in Dreams, however, which suggest that Obama was creating a fiction for future use that he already knew to be untrue. ...

Conservatives Getting Fed Up With "Continuing Resolutions"

David Lightman -- McClatchy Newspapers

Many Republican conservatives -- notably some elected for the first time last year -- have grown increasingly frustrated over plans to keep the government running for another three weeks, saying they want longer-term, more serious spending cuts. "When I was elected last year, it was to change the culture in Washington. The status quo here is, 'Take your time. We'll get to it.' We don't have the time to wait around," said freshman Rep. Tim Huelskamp, R-Kansas, who plans to vote plans to vote "no" on Tuesday on keeping the government funded through April 8. ...

Conyers Admits It: ObamaCare Is "Platform" For Creating Single-Payer System

Nicholas Ballasy -- CNS News

Video AND TEXT. During a newsmakers program at the National Press Club on Monday, Conyers said that after discussing the issue with Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D.-Ohio) he voted for the health-care law because he saw it as a necessary "platform" for building toward a single-payer health-care system in the United States. Ater the event at the National Press Club, Conyers said, "What we're trying to do is insure everybody, right? We're trying to insure more people, not less and so it's my feeling that the rising costs that are going on will not be solved by getting rid of people's health insurance--that throws them into emergency rooms and charity and other things. That's why HR 676 is our ultimate solution--is that everybody's insured from birth on and that's what we're still fighting for." ...

Crisis At Japanese Nuclear Complex Prompts Calls For U.S. Review

Rob Hotakainen, Renee Schoof And Margaret Talev -- McClatchy Newspapers

A review of federal records indicates that nearly a quarter of America's nuclear reactors in 13 states share the same design of the ill-fated Japanese reactors. The plants, called Mark I Boiling Water Reactors, were designed by General Electric. GE, which is donating $5 million to Japan for its relief effort, said Monday it was too early to assess what produced the problems at the complex. The Japanese crisis, and the potential scrutiny of America's reactors, comes as the nuclear industry seemingly had won a new lease on life. After decades as an orphan technology shuttered by the meltdown at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania, rising concerns about global warming, the need to curb carbon pollution and a quest for more electric production to fuel economic expansion buoyed nuclear fortunes. Now, that all seems at risk. ...

YEST Japan's Nuclear Meltdown Prompts Talk Of Safety And Yucca Mountain's Role As A Potential Waste-Dump Site

Karoun Demirjian -- Las Vegas Sun

Development of nuclear as an energy alternative has been getting a huge political push in recent months, with both the Obama administration and the new Republican majority in the House favoring investment in the field, including restarting construction on nuclear power plants that have been waiting in the wings since the Three Mile Island incident in the '70s. That new attention has, in turn, raised the question of what's to happen with Yucca Mountain -- Nevada's potential waste-dump site that hasn't yet been approved by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, but hasn't been scratched either. ...

Associated Press

Barack Obama and other top Democrats have been quick to lavish praise on former Massachusetts Republican Gov. Some analysts are wondering if that strategy could end up backfiring if Romney wins the Republican nomination for president and has to reach out to independents and moderate Democrats -- especially if those voters start warming up to the national law and its Massachusetts precedent. ...

Federal Debt Will Reach More Than 100% Of GDP For 1st Time Since World War II Under Obama's Budget

Jerome R. Corsi -- World Net Daily

Barack Obama's release of the 2012 budget was met by considerable skepticism, despite administration claims that the proposed spending cuts will put the government on track to half the budget deficit by the end of Obama's first term in office. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 12,268, down five points on a day in which the market traded mostly down as experts sorted through the details of the budget. Almost immediately after the 216-page plan was released, along with a 1,368-page appendix and a third 360-page volume of historical tables, critics pointed out that Obama's budget conceded that 2011 will see the largest one-year jump in debt in U.S. history, almost $2 trillion in a single year. With the release of these documents, the Obama administration was forced to concede that the national debt will total $15.476 trillion by Sept. 30, the end of the fiscal year. The debt will reach 102.6 percent of the gross domestic product, or GDP, for the first time since the end of World War II. ...

Obama Blaming Others For His Failures

Michael Goodwin -- New York Post

When word got out that Barack Obama told an interviewer he had learned from his mistakes, the grandees of the political class swarmed to the bait. Like primitive mystics "reading" the entrails of a sacrificial animal, they began dissecting his comments to divine whether the president is signaling a course change after the election. No, he's not going to change. Why mess with perfection? Obama thinks he did everything right and nothing wrong. And he remains stuck on blaming others, including voters, the media, Republicans, Washington, and impossible-to-please liberals. In short, nearly halfway through his term, Obama still doesn't get it. He's clueless about his massive failures, which means, if he's given the chance, we can expect more of them. ...

If you get the financial-reform bill passed -- then, well, I don't know about this particular derivatives rule, I'm not sure that I'm satisfied with that. And gosh, we haven't yet brought about world peace and -- (laughter.) I thought that was going to happen quicker." (Laughter.) An Inconvenient Lie

National Weather Agency Refutes Gore's Claim Recent Snowstorms Caused By Global Warming

Noel Sheppard -- News Busters

NOAA posted the following article at its Climate Watch magazine: "This is the second consecutive very wintry winter in the eastern United States. Last year, NOAA climate scientists concluded the record-breaking snowstorms most likely resulted from the combination of two natural climate patterns: El Nino and the Arctic Oscillation. So what about this year? Last winter's El Nino has flipped to La Nina, as temperatures in the eastern tropical Pacific have been cooler than normal. But the Arctic Oscillation seems to be in a repeat pattern, with conditions this December and January very similar to last winter, according to Deke Arndt, Chief of the Climate Monitoring Branch at NOAA's National Climatic Data Center." Not at all surprisingly, the man that just this past Friday accused Rush Limbaugh, Fox News, and the Wall Street Journal of being part of a conspiracy to mislead people about the dangers of manmade global warming was once again guilty of it himself. ...

Climate Change Claims Melt Away

Investor's Business Daily

In 2007, the U.N. said the Himalayan glaciers will be gone by 2035 due to man-made global warming. Turns out, though, that the claim was nonsense. It was not based on scientific research but on one scientist's guesswork, which was lifted from a telephone interview. New research indicates that half of the glaciers in the Himalaya's Karakoram range are advancing. Scientists from the University of California Santa Barbara and the University of Potsdam, who cited "erroneous reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change," strongly suggest that the "settled" science is not so clear. ...

Oh No, Not Another Unbiased Documentary About 'Climate Change'

James Delingpole -- Guardian (UK)

The "consensus" on 'Climate Change' exaggerates the number of scientists who believe in Man Made Global Warming and it grotesquely underestimates the number who have many good reasons for suspecting that there is far, far more to "Climate Change" than anthropogenic CO2. What's more such "consensus" as there is is an artificial construct. It has not been subjected to the rigour of an open or even semi-open market. It is the creation, almost entirely, of politically-driven funding from US government, from various UN bodies, from the EU, from left-leaning charitable foundations on a scale unprecedented in the history of science. So far, in real terms, no less than five times the amount of the Manhattan Project has been squandered on research into AGW. For that kind of money you can buy an awful lot of scientists prepared to suspend any belief they might have that global warming is anything other than man-made. ...

Stories You May Have Missed In Our Previous Issues

At the request of some of our readers, discerning and literate bunch that you all are, commencing with the May 1, 2008 issue we began archiving the March Report in a form suitable for presentation. Be advised that some of the links to external sites on the archived pages will have gone dead. Morte. Kaputski. Please report broken links to us using our "Rants & Raves" form by clicking here. Archives will be deleted as the page itself becomes useless (assuming that it wasn't to begin with, which may be presumptuous in and of itself).

Rants & Raves from Our Readers

A reader who wishes to remain anonymous sent in this criticism:

Mr. March, You linked the video of Hillary Clinton having what has been referred to as an 'outburst' on your site, yet, you did not explain the context. You omitted the truth and presented the situation as another crazy Clinton moment. You not only misportrayed the situation, you lost an opportunity to share/address the plight of women who have no rights in their country. I have been a long time reader of your March Report and have shared the Report with many people. I wrote to you addressing the Clinton video and have seen no retraction or explanation. I won't be referring anyone to this page anymore. My belief and trust that you maintain objectivity and research all sides has been permanently altered recently. Consevative or not, you have always seemed to work at being fair and true to journalism. I now am seeing you differently.

    Robert Jay March Responds:

This reader has mischaracterized the report. In fact, we went out of way to add clarity to the situation. The copy proved by WMAQ-TV, the televsion station which provide the report through one of our syndicators, said "A Congolese university student seems to presume that Bill Clinton's opinion is more important than the current Secretary of State's." In order to portray the situation accurately, we rewrote the copy to read as follows (emphasis added): "As a result of a translator's error, a Congolese university student appears to presume that Bill Clinton's opinion is more important than the current Secretary of State's. Hillary explodes, and hilarity ensues. Oh, those wacky, wacky Clintons." That was all the information that was available on August 11, 2009, when we ran the story. Witty retort aside, we went out of our way to clarify the report. Further details from the State Department and the White House did not become available until the following day.

Another reader, who wish to be referred to by the nom de plume "Needles," has an unusual take on the Certifi-Gate crisis:

The birthers need to step back and consider the consequences of their actions. If Mr. Obama were to be declared ineligible, there are several possible outcomes. They could remove him from office and install Joe Biden as President. The argument would be made that if Mr. Obama was not eligible to run for President, then the ticket is invalid as well and Joe Biden should not be Vice President. The next person in the order of succession would be Speaker of the House; Nancy Pelosi. Because no eligible candidate received a majority of electoral votes, the selection of the President could be thrown into the House. Speaker Nancy Pelosi, would then be king-maker. The choices are Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi or someone Nancy Pelosi picks. Maybe it is best to leave the birth certificate matter alone.

    Robert Jay March Responds:

Mr. Obama being declared ineligible does not legally invalidate Biden's election, provided he is qualified. Even if it did, the Constitution is too important to ignore; it is all that separates us from tyranny. Regardless of the consequences, if in fact Mr. Obama is ineligible, he must be removed. That said, all we have thus far is the preponderance of evidence leading to a likely conclusion, not conclusive facts. That is why the revelation of the long-form birth certificate is so important.

Finally, a third reader who wish to be referred to by the nom de plume "unihawker," writes:

Dear Mr. March, I was watching TV the other night and they showed a clip of Obama in Kenya during his trip there during the campaign. I am not sure if it was just some Freudian slip or not, but he said as he was waiving to the people greeting him, "Thank you, it is great to be back home". My question was, If he was not born in that country why would he call it home?

    Robert Jay March Responds:

Good question, for which I have no answer. If this report is correct, it is yet another contribution to the preponderance of evidence that implies Mr. Obama is ineligible. A copy of the long form birth certificate would cost Mr. Obama $12; thus far he has spent $1.3 Million to avoid producing it. As in any investigation, follow the money: in this case, what money is being spent on to conceal.
