Legendary "Meet The Press" Broadcaster Bill Monroe Dies Aged 90

Daily Mail (UK)

Bill Monroe, who hosted the long-running Washington political television show "Meet The Press" for nearly a decade, has died at a nursing home in the Washington area. Monroe, 90, was a Sunday morning staple on NBC from 1975 to 1984, and interviewed prominent political figures ranging from President Jimmy Carter to U.S. secretary of state Henry Kissinger. Daughter Lee said her father had a fall in December which put him in a nursing home and he had not been well since. ...

How Joan Crawford Ruthlessly Used Her Body To Control Co-Stars, Directors, And Anyone Who Could Advance Her Career

Donald Spoto -- Daily Mail (UK)

Rumours of Joan Crawford's freewheeling sex life had circulated Hollywood for many years. Even so, director Vincent Sherman was taken off guard when in 1949, as part of preparations for a movie called The Damned Don't Cry, she invited him to a studio screening room to watch some of her previous work. As the two sat in the dark, she removed her clothes and initiated an afternoon of wild passion. This article is adapted from "Possessed: The Life of Joan Crawford" by Donald Spoto.

Surprises From Donald Rumsfeld's Memoir. Did Saddam Hussein Target His Kids?

Daniel Bates -- Daily Mail (UK)

Donald Rumsfeld has revealed that Saddam Hussein took out a $60million hit on his daughters in revenge for the slaying of his two sons. The ex-U.S. Secretary of Defense said that the former Iraqi dictator offered the bounty to anybody who brought him both girls' heads. He was given the warning in a October 2003 meeting by which time U.S. forces had killed Saddam's sons Uday and Qusay and his 14-year-old grandson Mustapha. Mr Rumsfeld's comments came as part of a promotion push to accompany his new book "Known and Unknown: A Memoir" which detail his time in office until he retired in December 2006.

Stephen Hawking vs. God

Jim Wilson -- Redding Record Searchlight

Hawking proclaims two mutually excluding propositions in his book, "The Grand Design" according to fellow physicist Dr. Ben Wiker. On the one hand he declares that all existing theories of the origins of the universe are as subjective as they are non-comprehensive. On the other he states that these theories are comprehensive enough - and objective enough - to prove that God neither exists nor is necessary for the existence of everything else. The problem? You cannot have it both ways. If a theory is subjective it is tainted by having been processed through an intellectual lens that sees only what the viewer is prepared in advance to admit. Likewise, if it is not comprehensive it cannot entertain all of the relevant data and so cannot make comprehensive statements. But the declaration that God does not exist is both an objective and a comprehensive statement. It is -- in this case -- a desperate attempt to escape the prime implication of the Big Bang, that there is out there a Big Banger.

Bahrain Protests Continue With No End In Sight

Phillip Walter Wellman -- Voice Of America

Sporadic demonstrations across the Persian Gulf kingdom began on February 14 with what organizers called a "Day of Rage" against the government. Eventually, protesters massed at Manama's Pearl Roundabout, but security forces later used deadly force to clear the area. Following further violence and mounting international criticism, the government decided on Saturday that it would allow demonstrators to converge at the symbolic site, and the crown prince called for direct dialogue with all of Bahrain's political parties. Opposition leaders rejected the offer and said they needed time to formulate an agenda specifying their demands before any talks could take place. ...

Egypt Seeks To Seize Mubarak's Assets Abroad

Ernesto Londono -- Washington Post

Egypt's top prosecutor on Monday asked the Foreign Ministry to seek help from foreign governments to seize ousted president Hosni Mubarak's assets, Egyptian state media reported. Public prosecutor Abdel Magid Mahmud said the request will also cover assets in the name of Mubarak's wife, Suzanne, his sons Alaa and Gamal, and their wives. The move appeared to be an attempt to appease demonstrators who forced Mubarak to step down Feb. 11, after 18 days of street protests. One of the protesters' top demands has been holding the former president accountable for what they call widespread graft and corruption. ...

Egypt's Media Undergo Their Own Revolution

Jack Shenker -- Guardian (UK)

It was a front page few thought they would ever see. After weeks of dismissing pro-change Egyptian protesters as traitors, anarchists and malevolent foreign agents -- at one point it was even suggested that demonstrators were secretly receiving free meals from the American fast-food giant KFC -- the country's most venerable official daily carried a single headline in the heady hours after Hosni Mubarak's fall. The people have brought down the regime, declared Al-Ahram, triumphantly. As one newspaper vendor remarked, state-controlled media's own revolution had begun. But discontent at the status quo within Egypt's colossal state media complex -- which comprises eight TV channels, numerous radio stations, dozens of newspapers and magazines and 46,000 employees in Cairo alone -- had been rumbling long before Mubarak's resignation. ...

 Embattled Gadhafi Unleashes Military

Seattle Times

The bloody battle for control of Libya, where leader Moammar Gadhafi turned his military forces loose on civilians Monday after days of protests, could have repercussions far beyond the isolated North African nation. The faltering government struck back with a vengeance at mounting protests against his 42-year rule, as security forces and militiamen backed by helicopters and warplanes besieged parts of the capital of Tripoli, according to witnesses and news reports. ...

 Opinion: How Gadhafi Lost Libya

Andrew Solomon -- New Yorker

It seemed unlikely that Libya, sandwiched between regime collapse in Tunisia and regime collapse in Egypt, could be untouched by the movement. Gadhafi has had dominion over an increasingly malcontent country, and the citizens have been increasingly disgusted by the gap between his rhetoric of direct democracy and his autocratic grip on power. It is striking that the protests began in the eastern part of Libya. The area around Benghazi has always been the one least under Qaddafi's thumb, and most of his problems have originated there. Gadhafi's tribe is a desert one, and the verdant east resents his authority. ...

Jon Williams -- BBC News (UK)

For 41 years, Muammar Gaddafi, the self-proclaimed "Brotherly Leader and Guide of the Revolution," has made life difficult for the Western media. While British nationals can enter many of the world's 192 countries without visas, or collect them on arrival, Libya is one of the exceptions. There, the door is firmly shut to international journalists, local reporters face intimidation and the threat of worse. A Canadian company hoping to compete with China's near-monopoly of rare earth elements -- metals critical for everything from U.S. military weaponry to wind turbines -- wants to open a strip mine inside a national forest in northeast Wyoming. Processing raw ore into rare earths is an intensive operation that has been associated with radioactive water spills. This article is an interview with Joel (the taller and older one who is married to actress Frances McDormand) and Ethan (a poet and short-story writer) about "True Grit" and the craft of turning words into movies. Joel Coen: "We had both read the novel many years ago, when we were in college, as well as several other novels by Charles Portis. Then, a few years ago, we reread it and were really taken by the humor and by the voice of this 14-year-old girl who narrates it. We thought, "This is something we haven't seen before." Of course, we had seen the original movie with John Wayne when we were kids, but that seemed so distant in our memory, while the novel seemed so fresh. An Inconvenient Lie

National Weather Agency Refutes Gore's Claim Recent Snowstorms Caused By Global Warming

Noel Sheppard -- News Busters

NOAA posted the following article at its Climate Watch magazine: "This is the second consecutive very wintry winter in the eastern United States. Last year, NOAA climate scientists concluded the record-breaking snowstorms most likely resulted from the combination of two natural climate patterns: El Nino and the Arctic Oscillation. So what about this year? Last winter's El Nino has flipped to La Nina, as temperatures in the eastern tropical Pacific have been cooler than normal. But the Arctic Oscillation seems to be in a repeat pattern, with conditions this December and January very similar to last winter, according to Deke Arndt, Chief of the Climate Monitoring Branch at NOAA's National Climatic Data Center." Not at all surprisingly, the man that just this past Friday accused Rush Limbaugh, Fox News, and the Wall Street Journal of being part of a conspiracy to mislead people about the dangers of manmade global warming was once again guilty of it himself. ...

In 2007, the U.N. said the Himalayan glaciers will be gone by 2035 due to man-made global warming. Turns out, though, that the claim was nonsense. It was not based on scientific research but on one scientist's guesswork, which was lifted from a telephone interview. New research indicates that half of the glaciers in the Himalaya's Karakoram range are advancing. Scientists from the University of California Santa Barbara and the University of Potsdam, who cited "erroneous reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change," strongly suggest that the "settled" science is not so clear. ...

Oh No, Not Another Unbiased Documentary About 'Climate Change'

James Delingpole -- Guardian (UK)

The "consensus" on 'Climate Change' exaggerates the number of scientists who believe in Man Made Global Warming and it grotesquely underestimates the number who have many good reasons for suspecting that there is far, far more to "Climate Change" than anthropogenic CO2. What's more such "consensus" as there is is an artificial construct. It has not been subjected to the rigour of an open or even semi-open market. It is the creation, almost entirely, of politically-driven funding from US government, from various UN bodies, from the EU, from left-leaning charitable foundations on a scale unprecedented in the history of science. So far, in real terms, no less than five times the amount of the Manhattan Project has been squandered on research into AGW. For that kind of money you can buy an awful lot of scientists prepared to suspend any belief they might have that global warming is anything other than man-made. ...

More Than 1000 International Scientists Dissent Over Man-Made Global Warming Claims

Climate Depot

PDF File More than 1,000 dissenting scientists (updates previous 700 scientist report) from around the globe have now challenged man-made global warming claims made by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and former Vice President Al Gore. This new 2010 321-page Climate Depot Special Report -- updated from the 2007 groundbreaking U.S. Senate Report of over 400 scientists who voiced skepticism about the so-called global warming-consensus -- features the skeptical voices of over 1,000 international scientists, including many current and former UN IPCC scientists, who have now turned against the UN IPCC. This updated 2010 report includes a dramatic increase of over 300 additional (and growing) scientists and climate researchers since the last update in March 2009. ...

Certifi-Gate! America In Captivity

Supreme Court To Give Obama Eligibility Case 2nd Conference

Bob Unruh -- World Net Daily

In a stunning move, the U.S. Supreme Court has scheduled another "conference" on a legal challenge to Barack Obama's eligibility to occupy the Oval Office, but officials there are not answering questions about whether two justices given their jobs by Obama will participate. The court has confirmed that it has distributed a petition for rehearing in the case brought by attorney John Hemenway on behalf of retired Col. Gregory Hollister and it will be the subject of a conference on March 4. It was in January that the court denied, without comment, a request for a hearing on the arguments. But the attorney at the time had submitted a motion for Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, who were given their jobs by Obama, to recuse. Should Obama ultimately be shown to have been ineligible for the office, his actions, including his appointments, at least would be open to challenge and question. ...

Now, Chris Matthews Says Obama Doesn't Have Long-Form Birth Certificate

Bob Unruh -- World Net Daily

Video AND TEXT. MSNBC's "Hardball" host Chris Matthews, who earlier announced he is the "enemy of birthers" but said even so he thinks Barack Obama should release his birth certificate, now has suggested that the online, computer-generated image of a Certification of Live Birth from Hawaii is the only document Obama has. Earlier, he was addressing Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie's statement that he was going to chase down Obama's original state birth certificate to prove his eligibility. At the time, Matthews said, "I don't understand why doesn't the president just say send me a copy right now ... let's get this crappy story dead." Abercrombie later said, according to his friend radio personality Mike Evans, that the document doesn't exist and expressed concern that the controversy will be a major issue for Obama during his planned 2012 presidential re-election campaign. Evans related how Abercrombie had taken over the governor's office assuming he'd be able to clear things up, but then couldn't find the records he was seeking. "Abercrombie was probably more shocked than anybody," Evans said. ...

Hawaii Lawmakers Want Release Of Obama Birth Information

Mark Niesse -- Associated Press

Anyone would be able to get a copy of Barack Obama's birth records for a $100 fee under a bill introduced in the state Legislature that backers hope will finally dispel claims he was born elsewhere. The bill would change a privacy law barring the release of birth records unless the requester is someone with a tangible interest, such as a close family member. The measure was introduced by five Democrats but has not yet been scheduled for a public hearing, a required step before it can move forward. A decision on considering the bill will be made by the House's Democratic leadership and committee chairmen. ...

Hawaii Official Signs Affidavit Declaring Obama Birth Certificate Does Not Exist

Jerome R. Corsi -- World Net Daily

Former Hawaii elections clerk Tim Adams has now signed an affidavit swearing he was told by his supervisors in Hawaii that no long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate existed for Barack Obama Jr. in Hawaii and that neither Queens Medical Center nor Kapi'olani Medical Center in Honolulu had any record of Obama having been born in their medical facilities. "During the course of my employment," Adams swears in the affidavit, "I became aware that many requests were being made to the City and County of Honolulu Elections Division, the Hawaii Office of Elections, and the Hawaii Department of Health from around the country to obtain a copy of then-Senator Barack Obama's long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate." Adams' affidavit continues, "Senior officers in the City and County of Honolulu Elections Division told me on multiple occasions that no Hawaii long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate existed for Senator Obama in the Hawaii Department of Health and there was no record that any such document had ever been on file in the Hawaii Department of Health or any other branch or department of the Hawaii government." ...

What Has Obama Said About His Own Birth?

Jack Cashill -- American Thinker

In his 1995 memoir Dreams from My Father, Obama made the same claim. "He had left Hawaii back in 1963," he wrote of Obama Sr., "when I was only two years old." When Obama wrote this in Dreams, he may have been relating what he had himself been told. By 2009, he knew better, but so vested was he in the story, and so useful had it been in his rise, that he continued to dissemble, even before millions of schoolchildren. There are clues in Dreams, however, which suggest that Obama was creating a fiction for future use that he already knew to be untrue. ...

Wisconsin State Senator Glenn Grothman Tells Chris Matthews, "You're Completely Uninformed" On The Union Issue

MSNBC via Eyeblast and News Busters

Video MSNBC's Chris Matthews tried Monday to push the liberal media meme that Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker exempted police and firefighters from his budget repair plan because their unions endorsed him in last November's election. "Well one more time you're completely uninformed," replied Republican State Senator Glenn Grothman who then proceeded to tell the facts to the obviously clueless "Hardball" host. Michigan and many other states face big budget gaps, and union concessions are among solutions under review. The state's new Republican governor, Scott Walker, elected in November's Republican uprising across much of the nation, has strong support. Signs in windows at the Capitol read: "I support the taxpayers and Gov. Scott Walker." "We've been watching this fiscal nightmare unravel for months," said Mike Herl, a Madison Republican. YEST Defiant Wisconsin Dems Vow To Stay Away

Bob Hague -- Wisconsin Radio Network

The Wisconsin state Senate's 14 Democrats left Madison last week, and Republican leaders in the chamber now say they'll be on the floor Tuesday with or without them. Provisions of Governor Scott Walker's budget repair bill would radically restrict the ability of state workers to collectively bargain, and Senator Jon Erpenbach (D-Middleton) said Democrats will stay away as long as necessary to oppose that. "He wanted us to come back and do our jobs and debate the proposals," Erpenbach said of statements Walker had made. "And then in the very next sentence, he says he's not going to negotiate this. So it doesn't make any sense to me for us come back and debate something that's not negotiable. That's ridiculous." ...

In the end, he found he couldn't keep it hidden. Federal Debt Will Reach More Than 100% Of GDP For 1st Time Since World War II Under Obama's Budget

Jerome R. Corsi -- World Net Daily

Barack Obama's release of the 2012 budget was met by considerable skepticism, despite administration claims that the proposed spending cuts will put the government on track to half the budget deficit by the end of Obama's first term in office. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 12,268, down five points on a day in which the market traded mostly down as experts sorted through the details of the budget. Almost immediately after the 216-page plan was released, along with a 1,368-page appendix and a third 360-page volume of historical tables, critics pointed out that Obama's budget conceded that 2011 will see the largest one-year jump in debt in U.S. history, almost $2 trillion in a single year. With the release of these documents, the Obama administration was forced to concede that the national debt will total $15.476 trillion by Sept. 30, the end of the fiscal year. The debt will reach 102.6 percent of the gross domestic product, or GDP, for the first time since the end of World War II. ...

Obama Blaming Others For His Failures

Michael Goodwin -- New York Post

When word got out that Barack Obama told an interviewer he had learned from his mistakes, the grandees of the political class swarmed to the bait. Like primitive mystics "reading" the entrails of a sacrificial animal, they began dissecting his comments to divine whether the president is signaling a course change after the election. No, he's not going to change. Why mess with perfection? Obama thinks he did everything right and nothing wrong. And he remains stuck on blaming others, including voters, the media, Republicans, Washington, and impossible-to-please liberals. In short, nearly halfway through his term, Obama still doesn't get it. He's clueless about his massive failures, which means, if he's given the chance, we can expect more of them. ...

Eric Alterman -- Daily Beast

In case you hadn't heard, yes Barack Obama did go before a $30,000-per-person Democratic National Committee fundraiser in Greenwich, Connecticut -- the hedge-fund capital of the world -- and (at the home, I kid you not, of a guy named "Rich Richman" ) complain about how silly his base was being. (Laughter.) "If we get an historic health-care bill passed -- oh, well, the public option wasn't there. If you get the financial-reform bill passed -- then, well, I don't know about this particular derivatives rule, I'm not sure that I'm satisfied with that. And gosh, we haven't yet brought about world peace and -- (laughter.) I thought that was going to happen quicker." (Laughter.) With your own party heading for disaster in the polls, a number of its candidates are running away from you faster than you can say, "You really considered this guy for vice president?" ...

Rants & Raves from Our Readers

A reader who wishes to remain anonymous sent in this criticism:

Mr. March, You linked the video of Hillary Clinton having what has been referred to as an 'outburst' on your site, yet, you did not explain the context. You omitted the truth and presented the situation as another crazy Clinton moment. You not only misportrayed the situation, you lost an opportunity to share/address the plight of women who have no rights in their country. I have been a long time reader of your March Report and have shared the Report with many people. I wrote to you addressing the Clinton video and have seen no retraction or explanation. I won't be referring anyone to this page anymore. My belief and trust that you maintain objectivity and research all sides has been permanently altered recently. Consevative or not, you have always seemed to work at being fair and true to journalism. I now am seeing you differently.

    Robert Jay March Responds:

This reader has mischaracterized the report. In fact, we went out of way to add clarity to the situation. The copy proved by WMAQ-TV, the televsion station which provide the report through one of our syndicators, said "A Congolese university student seems to presume that Bill Clinton's opinion is more important than the current Secretary of State's." In order to portray the situation accurately, we rewrote the copy to read as follows (emphasis added): "As a result of a translator's error, a Congolese university student appears to presume that Bill Clinton's opinion is more important than the current Secretary of State's. Hillary explodes, and hilarity ensues. Oh, those wacky, wacky Clintons." That was all the information that was available on August 11, 2009, when we ran the story. Witty retort aside, we went out of our way to clarify the report. Further details from the State Department and the White House did not become available until the following day.

Another reader, who wish to be referred to by the nom de plume "Needles," has an unusual take on the Certifi-Gate crisis:

The birthers need to step back and consider the consequences of their actions. If Mr. Obama were to be declared ineligible, there are several possible outcomes. They could remove him from office and install Joe Biden as President. The argument would be made that if Mr. Obama was not eligible to run for President, then the ticket is invalid as well and Joe Biden should not be Vice President. The next person in the order of succession would be Speaker of the House; Nancy Pelosi. Because no eligible candidate received a majority of electoral votes, the selection of the President could be thrown into the House. Speaker Nancy Pelosi, would then be king-maker. The choices are Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi or someone Nancy Pelosi picks. Maybe it is best to leave the birth certificate matter alone.

    Robert Jay March Responds:

Mr. Obama being declared ineligible does not legally invalidate Biden's election, provided he is qualified. Even if it did, the Constitution is too important to ignore; it is all that separates us from tyranny. Regardless of the consequences, if in fact Mr. Obama is ineligible, he must be removed. That said, all we have thus far is the preponderance of evidence leading to a likely conclusion, not conclusive facts. That is why the revelation of the long-form birth certificate is so important.

Finally, a third reader who wish to be referred to by the nom de plume "unihawker," writes:

Dear Mr. March, I was watching TV the other night and they showed a clip of Obama in Kenya during his trip there during the campaign. I am not sure if it was just some Freudian slip or not, but he said as he was waiving to the people greeting him, "Thank you, it is great to be back home". My question was, If he was not born in that country why would he call it home?

    Robert Jay March Responds:

Good question, for which I have no answer. If this report is correct, it is yet another contribution to the preponderance of evidence that implies Mr. Obama is ineligible. A copy of the long form birth certificate would cost Mr. Obama $12; thus far he has spent $1.3 Million to avoid producing it. As in any investigation, follow the money: in this case, what money is being spent on to conceal.
