Mubarak Resigns, Hands Power To The Military

A woman who claims to have been strip searched and aggressively groped for not declaring she was carrying raspberries across the border is suing U.S. authorities. Loretta Van Beek, an interior designer, from Ontario Canada, was travelling home from Georgia when she was sent for a secondary inspection in a windowless room. The 46-year-old said the two female agents ordered her to strip and told her they were "about to get intimate." One agent then 'aggressively groped her breasts and genital area' for an extended period of time while the other one watched, it is alleged, before she was photographed, fingerprinted and sent back to Canada. ...

 AND TEXT. Authorities said the five victims who were found in the rubble were a four-month-old boy, a 16-year-old girl, a 69-year-old woman, and a 79-year-old man. The gender and identity of the fifth victim will need to be determined through DNA testing, the coroner said. Officials are not yet releasing the names of any of the victims. A cadaver dog from the Poconos had been brought in to help with the search for the final victim. The massive fire, which followed the explosion at North 13th and West Allen streets around 10:50 Wednesday night, destroyed a row of eight homes, damaged more than 30 other homes and 10 businesses, and forced hundreds of people to flee their hom ...

 AND TEXT. The Allentown fire chief told 69 News that at least one person has died as a result of a powerful explosion that sparked an inferno in Allentown late Wednesday night. As many as five other people remain unaccounted for. The massive fire, which followed the explosion at North 13th and West Allen streets around 10:45, destroyed a row of eight homes, damaged at least 30 others, and forced hundreds of people to flee their homes. Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski told 69 News that the blast, which rocked the city and many surrounding suburbs, was sparked by a leak of natural gas. Dan Adamo, a spokesman for Reading-based UGI, however, said he was unable to confirm that. ...

 A library employee in Roanoke, Virginia performed an impromptu striptease act at a downtown bar Friday night. Liquor control officials have since visited the bar, but city officials are staying mum. ...

 A 74-year-old Wisconsin woman has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of her infant daughter, more than five decades after the child's death was deemed an accident. ...

The agency has been under pressure to help The White House navigate the crisis in Egypt, even though its outcome is largely contingent on the internal deliberations of one man. Panetta acknowledged the daunting aspect of that assignment in testimony before the House intelligence committee, saying that for spy services, "our biggest problem is always: How do we get into the head of somebody?" Even within Egypt's government, there has been confusion about Mubarak's intentions. His defiant speech Thursday evening, in which he vowed to stay in office until elections are held in September, when his term ends, came after Egyptian military officials had signaled Mubarak's imminent departure earlier in the day. ...

The governor said the federal government hasn't secured the state's border with Mexico and has stuck Arizona with the costs tied to illegal immigration. "Because the federal government has failed to protect the citizens of Arizona, I am left with no other choice," Brewer said. "We're continually looking at arrests of drug cartels," she said. "It's just untolerable." ...

Former senator Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) laid into Barack Obama's response to the unrest in Egypt on Thursday, accusing him of siding against an American ally. Santorum, who is likely to announce a run for president in the coming months, spent much of his time at the podium at CPAC criticizing the president's foreign policy and suggesting Obama hasn't learned the lessons of history. He accused Obama of siding with Iranian leaders during the protests there two years ago and now siding against Egypt, an American ally in the Middle East. ...

As weeks go, House Speaker John Boehner's had better. First Republicans failed to extend parts of the Patriot Act. Then they fell short on a bid to claw back millions of dollars in excess U.N. funding. And then they started squabbling over the scope of their own budget cuts. Now Republicans are trying to regroup. Acknowledging that floor votes sometimes go off-script and members of the same party sometimes have disagreements, they've bounced back with a new agreement to cut spending by what they claim is $100 billion. They say the party is still laser-focused on reducing the size of government and spurring economic growth as they promised during the campaign season. ...

It wasn't a New York Times or a Newsweek who brought down Congressman Chris Lee, but an internet gossip site. Remy Stern of Gawker.com says the woman who was in contact with Lee via Craigslist got in touch with his staff with e-mails sent by a Christopher Lee. "We received an e-mail about a week ago from a woman who described briefly the circumstances and e-mail exchange she had with this Chris Lee," explains Stern. "From there, we had numerous conversations with her, had her forward the e-mail and photos, and we took time to verify the e-mails and photos she was telling us." ...

Last night Lee released a statement, saying: "It has been a tremendous honour to serve the people of Western New York. I regret the harm that my actions have caused my family, my staff and my constituents. "I deeply and sincerely apologise to them all. I have made profound mistakes and I promise to work as hard as I can to seek their forgiveness. "The challenges we face in Western New York and across the country are too serious for me to allow this distraction to continue, and so I am announcing that I have resigned my seat in Congress effective immediately." The White House wants to wind down mortgage refinancers Fannie Mae (FNMA) and Freddie Mac (FMCC), eventually raising their rates so much that the private market begins to take over their role, the Treasury Department said on Friday. The administration also wants to reduce the conforming loan limits (the limits on the size of a loan that Fannie and Freddie can guarantee), demand 10% down payments, and wind down Fannie and Freddie's investment portfolios. The Treasury Department said that the roles of the GSEs would be reduced "over the next several years." ...

Ben Bernanke received rougher than normal treatment from lawmakers on Capitol Hill yesterday -- his first appearance before a Republican-controlled Congress. A flurry of opening jabs came from Tea Party favorite Rep. Paul Ryan, (R-Wisc.), head of the House Budget Committee who quarterbacked the grilling of the Federal Reserve chairman. Calling Bernanke's policies "reckless," Ryan said he believes the Fed boss might not be able to detect dangerous inflation until "the cow is out of the barn." "We know that [our monetary policy] is on a very, very dangerous track," Ryan said. ...

Weber's decision, which has not been officially confirmed but is widely assumed to be the case, would represent an "affront" to Chancellor Angela Merkel, the Financial Times Deutschland newspaper said. Merkel "will not send another German into the arena, because you don't switch horses in mid stream," the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) quoted a source close to the government as saying. "There is only one German who would meet the criteria to head the ECB, and that is Axel Weber," the Sueddeutsche Zeitung quoted another government source as saying. ...

Now, Chris Matthews Says Obama Doesn't Have Long-Form Birth Certificate

 AND TEXT. MSNBC's "Hardball" host Chris Matthews, who earlier announced he is the "enemy of birthers" but said even so he thinks Barack Obama should release his birth certificate, now has suggested that the online, computer-generated image of a Certification of Live Birth from Hawaii is the only document Obama has. Earlier, he was addressing Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie's statement that he was going to chase down Obama's original state birth certificate to prove his eligibility. At the time, Matthews said, "I don't understand why doesn't the president just say send me a copy right now É let's get this crappy story dead." Abercrombie later said, according to his friend radio personality Mike Evans, that the document doesn't exist and expressed concern that the controversy will be a major issue for Obama during his planned 2012 presidential re-election campaign. Evans related how Abercrombie had taken over the governor's office assuming he'd be able to clear things up, but then couldn't find the records he was seeking. "Abercrombie was probably more shocked than anybody," Evans said. ...

Hawaii Lawmakers Want Release Of Obama Birth Information

Anyone would be able to get a copy of Barack Obama's birth records for a $100 fee under a bill introduced in the state Legislature that backers hope will finally dispel claims he was born elsewhere. The bill would change a privacy law barring the release of birth records unless the requester is someone with a tangible interest, such as a close family member. The measure was introduced by five Democrats but has not yet been scheduled for a public hearing, a required step before it can move forward. A decision on considering the bill will be made by the House's Democratic leadership and committee chairmen. ...

Hawaii Official Signs Affidavit Declaring Obama Birth Certificate Does Not Exist

Former Hawaii elections clerk Tim Adams has now signed an affidavit swearing he was told by his supervisors in Hawaii that no long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate existed for Barack Obama Jr. in Hawaii and that neither Queens Medical Center nor Kapi'olani Medical Center in Honolulu had any record of Obama having been born in their medical facilities. "During the course of my employment," Adams swears in the affidavit, "I became aware that many requests were being made to the City and County of Honolulu Elections Division, the Hawaii Office of Elections, and the Hawaii Department of Health from around the country to obtain a copy of then-Senator Barack Obama's long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate." Adams' affidavit continues, "Senior officers in the City and County of Honolulu Elections Division told me on multiple occasions that no Hawaii long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate existed for Senator Obama in the Hawaii Department of Health and there was no record that any such document had ever been on file in the Hawaii Department of Health or any other branch or department of the Hawaii government." ...

In his 1995 memoir Dreams from My Father, Obama made the same claim. "He had left Hawaii back in 1963," he wrote of Obama Sr., "when I was only two years old." When Obama wrote this in Dreams, he may have been relating what he had himself been told. A reader who wishes to remain anonymous sent in this criticism:

Mr. March, You linked the video of Hillary Clinton having what has been referred to as an 'outburst' on your site, yet, you did not explain the context. You omitted the truth and presented the situation as another crazy Clinton moment. You not only misportrayed the situation, you lost an opportunity to share/address the plight of women who have no rights in their country. I have been a long time reader of your March Report and have shared the Report with many people. I wrote to you addressing the Clinton video and have seen no retraction or explanation. I won't be referring anyone to this page anymore. My belief and trust that you maintain objectivity and research all sides has been permanently altered recently. Consevative or not, you have always seemed to work at being fair and true to journalism. I now am seeing you differently.

This reader has mischaracterized the report. In fact, we went out of way to add clarity to the situation. The copy proved by WMAQ-TV, the televsion station which provide the report through one of our syndicators, said "A Congolese university student seems to presume that Bill Clinton's opinion is more important than the current Secretary of State's." In order to portray the situation accurately, we rewrote the copy to read as follows (emphasis added): "As a result of a translator's error, a Congolese university student appears to presume that Bill Clinton's opinion is more important than the current Secretary of State's. Hillary explodes, and hilarity ensues. Oh, those wacky, wacky Clintons." That was all the information that was available on August 11, 2009, when we ran the story. Witty retort aside, we went out of our way to clarify the report. Further details from the State Department and the White House did not become available until the following day.

Another reader, who wish to be referred to by the nom de plume "Needles," has an unusual take on the Certifi-Gate crisis:

The birthers need to step back and consider the consequences of their actions. If Mr. Obama were to be declared ineligible, there are several possible outcomes. They could remove him from office and install Joe Biden as President. The argument would be made that if Mr. Obama was not eligible to run for President, then the ticket is invalid as well and Joe Biden should not be Vice President. The next person in the order of succession would be Speaker of the House; Nancy Pelosi. Because no eligible candidate received a majority of electoral votes, the selection of the President could be thrown into the House. Speaker Nancy Pelosi, would then be king-maker. The choices are Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi or someone Nancy Pelosi picks. Maybe it is best to leave the birth certificate matter alone.

Robert Jay March Responds:

Mr. Obama being declared ineligible does not legally invalidate Biden's election, provided he is qualified. Even if it did, the Constitution is too important to ignore; it is all that separates us from tyranny. Regardless of the consequences, if in fact Mr. Obama is ineligible, he must be removed. That said, all we have thus far is the preponderance of evidence leading to a likely conclusion, not conclusive facts. That is why the revelation of the long-form birth certificate is so important.

Finally, a third reader who wish to be referred to by the nom de plume "unihawker," writes:

Dear Mr. March, I was watching TV the other night and they showed a clip of Obama in Kenya during his trip there during the campaign. I am not sure if it was just some Freudian slip or not, but he said as he was waiving to the people greeting him, "Thank you, it is great to be back home". My question was, If he was not born in that country why would he call it home?

Robert Jay March Responds:

Good question, for which I have no answer. If this report is correct, it is yet another contribution to the preponderance of evidence that implies Mr. Obama is ineligible. A copy of the long form birth certificate would cost Mr. Obama $12; thus far he has spent $1.3 Million to avoid producing it. As in any investigation, follow the money: in this case, what money is being spent on to conceal.
