How Joan Crawford Ruthlessly Used Her Body To Control Co-Stars, Directors, And Anyone Who Could Advance Her Career

Donald Spoto -- Daily Mail (UK)

Rumours of Joan Crawford's freewheeling sex life had circulated Hollywood for many years. Even so, director Vincent Sherman was taken off guard when in 1949, as part of preparations for a movie called The Damned Don't Cry, she invited him to a studio screening room to watch some of her previous work. As the two sat in the dark, she removed her clothes and initiated an afternoon of wild passion. This article is adapted from "Possessed: The Life of Joan Crawford" by Donald Spoto.

Surprises From Donald Rumsfeld's Memoir. Did Saddam Hussein Target His Kids?

Daniel Bates -- Daily Mail (UK)

Donald Rumsfeld has revealed that Saddam Hussein took out a $60million hit on his daughters in revenge for the slaying of his two sons. The ex-U.S. Secretary of Defense said that the former Iraqi dictator offered the bounty to anybody who brought him both girls' heads. He was given the warning in a October 2003 meeting by which time U.S. forces had killed Saddam's sons Uday and Qusay and his 14-year-old grandson Mustapha. Mr Rumsfeld's comments came as part of a promotion push to accompany his new book "Known and Unknown: A Memoir" which detail his time in office until he retired in December 2006.

Stephen Hawking vs. God

Jim Wilson -- Redding Record Searchlight

Hawking proclaims two mutually excluding propositions in his book, "The Grand Design" according to fellow physicist Dr. Ben Wiker. On the one hand he declares that all existing theories of the origins of the universe are as subjective as they are non-comprehensive. On the other he states that these theories are comprehensive enough - and objective enough - to prove that God neither exists nor is necessary for the existence of everything else. The problem? You cannot have it both ways. If a theory is subjective it is tainted by having been processed through an intellectual lens that sees only what the viewer is prepared in advance to admit. Likewise, if it is not comprehensive it cannot entertain all of the relevant data and so cannot make comprehensive statements. But the declaration that God does not exist is both an objective and a comprehensive statement. It is -- in this case -- a desperate attempt to escape the prime implication of the Big Bang, that there is out there a Big Banger.

John And Abigail Adams: A Marriage That Defied Separation And War

Michiko Kakuta -- New York Times

Although the gender politics of the day did not afford Abigail Adams the opportunities enjoyed by later generations of women, she was John Adams's closest adviser and sounding board before, during and after the Revolutionary War. During his long absences from home, Abigail managed the family farm, oversaw their finances and raised their children. Later, during his diplomatic postings in Paris and London and his tenure as president, she assumed a more public role, so much so that the historian Joseph J. Ellis writes in his new book, "First Family: Abigail and John Adams," that "they were effectively regarded as a political team" -- or as one television dramatization of their lives more crudely put it, "America's first power couple."

When John Waters Met Little Richard

John Waters -- Guardian (UK)

In 1987, the iconic filmmaker John Waters was sent by Playboy magazine to interview his all-time hero: Little Richard. It was a surreal, almost religious experience for John who had been a lifelong fan of the godfather of rock'n'roll. So why did it almost end in a fistfight? All is revealed in this excerpt from Waters' new book, Role Models.

"America By Heart": A Harsh Critique Of Obama By Sarah Palin

Michael Falcone -- ABC News (US)

Video AND TEXT. In the book, "America by Heart: Reflections on Family, Faith, and Flag", Palin accuses Obama of misunderstanding the American people. "The epitome of progressive thinking was Barack Obama's promise, just before the 2008 election, that 'we are five days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America,'" Palin writes in the book. "I guess you could say that he warned us! But the problem is that Americans don't want a fundamental transformation of their country." Palin portrays herself as a modern-day Jefferson Smith, the character played by Jimmy Stewart in the iconic film, "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," which she says is her favorite movie.

The Battles For Late Night

Louis Menand -- New Yorker

The Leno-O'Brien debacle might not have happened if Jay Leno had used representation. As Bill Carter tells the story in his hugely entertaining recap, The War for Late Night: When Leno Went Early and Television Went Crazy, Leno fired his manager in 1992, shortly after taking over from Johnny Carson as host of the "Tonight Show." Leno believed that his manager had said things to poison his relationship with Carson. As it was, David Letterman, who, as the host of "Late Night," had been following Carson for eleven years and was considered the heir apparent, felt resentment about being passed over for Leno, whose reputation had been built partly on his many guest appearances on "Late Night." Leno was professional to the core, but he did not want business to ruin friendship. He never used a manager or an agent for his contract renewals again.

Bush: 'Damn Right' I Gave The Go-Ahead On Waterboarding Terror Suspect

Alex Eichler -- Atlantic Monthly

In George W. Bush's new memoir, Decision Points, the former president explains that the CIA approached him about the possibility of waterboarding Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the al-Qaeda operative often called "the architect of 9/11." In his memoir, Bush writes that his response was "Damn right." This seems to be a straightforward admission that Bush approved the use of waterboarding on a detainee--even though this technique is widely regarded as inhumane, and its use is thought by many to violate the United Nations Convention Against Torture, of which the United States is a signatory. (In media outside the U.S., waterboarding is almost always referred to as torture.)

Review Of Bob Woodward's New Book, "Obama's Wars"

Michiko Kakutani -- New York Times

It's no secret that there have been ferocious arguments within the Obama administration over the war in Afghanistan: both substantive policy debates. Bob Woodward's new book, "Obama's Wars," underscores just how vociferous and highly personal those altercations and message wars often became. Mr. Woodward adds lots of detail and anecdotal color to the story of how the White House's policy on Afghanistan evolved over the administration's first 18 months, and how the decision was made to send 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan (to try to wrest momentum away from a resurgent Taliban) with a drawdown of American forces scheduled to begin in July 2011.

Peter Hitchens Talks About His Faith And His Atheist Sibling Christopher

Charles Lewis -- National Post

Almost everyone knows how his elder brother Christopher Hitchens feels, but less well known are the views of Peter Hitchens, a conservative columnist for the The Mail on Sunday in London, who was inspired to write his latest book, The Rage Against God: How Atheism Led Me to Faith, because of the "dangerous" teachings of men like his brother. It is not a faith book, at least not in the conventional sense of defending doctrine or even making a philosophical case for God. The book is devoid of "faith talk"; the name Jesus does not appear once in the book. "Remember, I'm an ex-Trotskyite, so I'm quite suspicious of the man of total conviction and certainty. What I did not want, coming away from Marxist utopianism, was to find another mirror image of utopianism," he said. "The argument I'm making for religion is largely a negative one: if you get rid of [God] you will be in a tremendous fix."

Bozo The Clown: "The Man Behind The Nose"

Philip Potempa -- Northwest Indiana Times

Did you hear the one about when Bozo ran for president? Or how two assassination attempts were made on his life? How about the time that Bozo flew into the jungles of New Guinea to see if he could bond with dangerous cannibal tribes? Well then, you must know about the time his size 83 AAA shoes saved him from being swallowed whole by a giant, murderous python in Thailand, right? These are just a few of the "prizes" plucked from "The Man Behind the Nose: Assassins, Astronauts, Cannibals, and Other Stupendous Tales," (HarperCollins $25.99) a new 256-page hardcover by Susan Harmon, widow of Larry Harmon, the man credited with creating "the world's most famous clown. The book, released in time for Bozo's 50th anniversary, was co-authored by Thomas Scott McKenzie. The late Larry Harmon reportedly drafted most of the book before his death.

New Book Celebrates George Herriman's Krazy Kat

Doug MacCash -- Times-Picayune

Video AND TEXT. "George Herriman's Krazy Kat, A Celebration of Sundays" is a dynamite introduction to one of the most dysfunctional duos ever found on the funny pages. It's also a book-shelf must-have for anyone devoted to jazz-era expression. But beneath the quirky comedy of the antique cartoon, Herriman's real life story is a disquieting detour through the bad ol' days of American race relations that begins in the Treme neighborhood of New Orleans. Starting exactly 100 years ago (July 26, 1910), Ignatz the cartoon mouse began hurling bricks at the head of his Coconino County neighbor, Krazy Kat. Zip! Pow! It's no wonder that a mouse, given the chance, would torment a cat. Here's the weird thing: For the next 34 years, Krazy Kat fell more deeply in love with Ignatz with each beaning. Try as he might, police officer Pupp could do nothing to dampen either Ignatz's violent obsession or Krazy's misplaced ardor for the mouse that he or she (we're never quite sure of Krazy's sex) called "L'il Anjil."

Fight Over Evolution Still Simmers 85 Years After Scopes Trial

Bob Smietana -- The Tennessean

Rachel Held Evans had a choice while growing up in Dayton, Tenn., site of the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial. Believe the Bible or believe evolution. "I was taught that if you don't interpret Genesis 1 and 2 literally, then you don't take the Bible seriously," said Evans, 29. "I held on tightly to that for a long time." Evans says creationism -- the belief that God created the Earth around 6,000 years ago in six days -- was commonplace in her town. Unable to reconcile science with her faith, Evans embraced evolution. "I learned you don't have to choose between loving and following Jesus and believing in evolution," she said. She chronicled her personal journey in a new memoir, Evolving in Monkey Town: How a Girl Who Knew All the Answers Learned to Ask the Questions.

Strip-Searched Woman Sues After Her "Genitals Are Groped" When She Fails To Disclose Raspberries At Border

Daily Mail (UK)

A woman who claims to have been strip searched and aggressively groped for not declaring she was carrying raspberries across the border is suing U.S. authorities. Loretta Van Beek, an interior designer, from Ontario Canada, was travelling home from Georgia when she was sent for a secondary inspection in a windowless room. The 46-year-old said the two female agents ordered her to strip and told her they were "about to get intimate." One agent then 'aggressively groped her breasts and genital area' for an extended period of time while the other one watched, it is alleged, before she was photographed, fingerprinted and sent back to Canada. ...

As many as five other people remain unaccounted for. The massive fire, which followed the explosion at North 13th and West Allen streets around 10:45, destroyed a row of eight homes, damaged at least 30 others, and forced hundreds of people to flee their homes. Demonstrators began the work of spreading the protest to new sites after Mubarak's address late Thursday and sent out new teams to seal off the state television and radio buildings. By early afternoon Friday, a few thousand protesters surrounded the building. "Mubarak is a dictator and doesn't want democratic change," said Mohammed Ali, a 30-year-old computer engineer at Oracle who was manning a barricade.  Israelis Appear Relieved At Mubarak's Decision Not To Quit; Reaction Muted Elsewhere In Region

Janine Zacharia -- Washington Post

"Israel breathed a sigh of relief," Israeli commentator Alex Fishman wrote in Friday's daily Yedioth Ahronoth after Mubarak's speech. Fishman noted that now it was unlikely there would be any shifts in Egypt's foreign policy until at least September. Before the speech late Thursday, Defense Minister Ehud Barak was in the United States conferring with American officials about Israel's concerns in the event of Mubarak's ouster. Since the start of demonstrations Jan. 25, Netanyahu has been warning about the prospect of Egypt's pro-democracy movement morphing into something akin to the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran. Israeli Labor Party Knesset member and former minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer noted that Mubarak's speech left many question marks for Israel, including what would happen during a transfer of power, who the next leader would be and the fate of Egypt's peace treaty with Israel. ...

One of the world's great museums resembled a military camp on Thursday, with soldiers patrolling behind its wrought iron gates and armored vehicles parked nearby. Inside, workers with white coats and latex gloves delicately handled artifacts that were damaged in the chaos sweeping Egypt. The country's priceless trove of antiquities has emerged mostly unscathed from the unrest so far, but tourism, a pillar of the Egyptian economy, has not. YEST Anderson Cooper Describes Egypt Attack To David Letterman

Sofia M. Fernandez -- Hollywood Reporter

In his first interview since returning from Egypt, CNN's Anderson Cooper described to David Letterman how he and his crew were attacked by a mob on the streets of Cairo last week, "A guy went to grab our camera and it became a free-for-all. People came from all around, surrounding us, punching us, kicking us, trying to rip the clothes off my female producer." Cooper continued, "My instinct, of course, is to punch back but I would start to slap back and then, you know, realize this is just going to make it worse." The correspondent said the fracas and the day's unrest were part of an organized attack by supporters and those aligned with Egypt's embattled president Hosni Mubarak. The proof? "As soon as they wanted it to stop, it suddenly evaporated." ...

YEST Guitar Hero Axed By Activision

Guardian (UK)

Activision has ruthlessly culled its music game portfolio and cancelled Guitar Hero, DJ Hero and True Crime. The Guitar Hero series, once one of the most successful brands in video gaming, has been axed after last year's Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock title performed poorly at retail. YEST F.D.A. Expedites Review Of Robotic Arm

Andrew Zajac -- Los Angeles Times

Responding to the needs of badly wounded war veterans, federal officials said Tuesday they were accelerating reviews of a science-fiction-like robotic arm controlled by a computer chip on the brain. The device would make the use of prosthetic arms, hands and fingers seem almost natural by using a microchip implanted on the brain to record and decode signals to neurons that control the prosthesis. In a dramatic video accompanying the announcement by the Food and Drug Administration, the prosthetic arm wielded pliers and picked up a clothespin to demonstrate its dexterity. ...

An Inconvenient Lie

Climate Change Claims Melt Away

Investor's Business Daily

In 2007, the U.N. said the Himalayan glaciers will be gone by 2035 due to man-made global warming. Turns out, though, that the claim was nonsense. It was not based on scientific research but on one scientist's guesswork, which was lifted from a telephone interview. New research indicates that half of the glaciers in the Himalaya's Karakoram range are advancing. Scientists from the University of California Santa Barbara and the University of Potsdam, who cited "erroneous reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change," strongly suggest that the "settled" science is not so clear. ...

Oh No, Not Another Unbiased Documentary About 'Climate Change'

James Delingpole -- Guardian (UK)

The "consensus" on 'Climate Change' exaggerates the number of scientists who believe in Man Made Global Warming and it grotesquely underestimates the number who have many good reasons for suspecting that there is far, far more to "Climate Change" than anthropogenic CO2. What's more such "consensus" as there is is an artificial construct. It has not been subjected to the rigour of an open or even semi-open market. It is the creation, almost entirely, of politically-driven funding from US government, from various UN bodies, from the EU, from left-leaning charitable foundations on a scale unprecedented in the history of science. So far, in real terms, no less than five times the amount of the Manhattan Project has been squandered on research into AGW. For that kind of money you can buy an awful lot of scientists prepared to suspend any belief they might have that global warming is anything other than man-made. ...

PDF File More than 1,000 dissenting scientists (updates previous 700 scientist report) from around the globe have now challenged man-made global warming claims made by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and former Vice President Al Gore. This new 2010 321-page Climate Depot Special Report -- updated from the 2007 groundbreaking U.S. Senate Report of over 400 scientists who voiced skepticism about the so-called global warming-consensus -- features the skeptical voices of over 1,000 international scientists, including many current and former UN IPCC scientists, who have now turned against the UN IPCC.  CIA Director Leon Panetta's Erroneous Prediction Leads To Avalanche Of Erroneous Expectations

Greg Miller -- Washington Post

The agency has been under pressure to help The White House navigate the crisis in Egypt, even though its outcome is largely contingent on the internal deliberations of one man. Panetta acknowledged the daunting aspect of that assignment in testimony before the House intelligence committee, saying that for spy services, "our biggest problem is always: How do we get into the head of somebody?" Even within Egypt's government, there has been confusion about Mubarak's intentions. His defiant speech Thursday evening, in which he vowed to stay in office until elections are held in September, when his term ends, came after Egyptian military officials had signaled Mubarak's imminent departure earlier in the day. ...

Then they fell short on a bid to claw back millions of dollars in excess U.N. funding. And then they started squabbling over the scope of their own budget cuts. Now Republicans are trying to regroup. Acknowledging that floor votes sometimes go off-script and members of the same party sometimes have disagreements, they've bounced back with a new agreement to cut spending by what they claim is $100 billion. When word got out that Barack Obama told an interviewer he had learned from his mistakes, the grandees of the political class swarmed to the bait. Like primitive mystics "reading" the entrails of a sacrificial animal, they began dissecting his comments to divine whether the president is signaling a course change after the election. No, he's not going to change. Why mess with perfection? Obama thinks he did everything right and nothing wrong. And he remains stuck on blaming others, including voters, the media, Republicans, Washington, and impossible-to-please liberals. In short, nearly halfway through his term, Obama still doesn't get it. (Laughter.) "If we get an historic health-care bill passed -- oh, well, the public option wasn't there. If you get the financial-reform bill passed -- then, well, I don't know about this particular derivatives rule, I'm not sure that I'm satisfied with that. And gosh, we haven't yet brought about world peace and -- (laughter.) I thought that was going to happen quicker." (Laughter.) With your own party heading for disaster in the polls, a number of its candidates are running away from you faster than you can say, "You really considered this guy for vice president?" ...

Certifi-Gate! America In Captivity

Now, Chris Matthews Says Obama Doesn't Have Long-Form Birth Certificate

Bob Unruh -- World Net Daily

Video AND TEXT. MSNBC's "Hardball" host Chris Matthews, who earlier announced he is the "enemy of birthers" but said even so he thinks Barack Obama should release his birth certificate, now has suggested that the online, computer-generated image of a Certification of Live Birth from Hawaii is the only document Obama has. Earlier, he was addressing Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie's statement that he was going to chase down Obama's original state birth certificate to prove his eligibility. At the time, Matthews said, "I don't understand why doesn't the president just say send me a copy right now É let's get this crappy story dead." Abercrombie later said, according to his friend radio personality Mike Evans, that the document doesn't exist and expressed concern that the controversy will be a major issue for Obama during his planned 2012 presidential re-election campaign. Evans related how Abercrombie had taken over the governor's office assuming he'd be able to clear things up, but then couldn't find the records he was seeking. "Abercrombie was probably more shocked than anybody," Evans said. ...

The measure was introduced by five Democrats but has not yet been scheduled for a public hearing, a required step before it can move forward. Jerome R. Corsi -- World Net Daily

Former Hawaii elections clerk Tim Adams has now signed an affidavit swearing he was told by his supervisors in Hawaii that no long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate existed for Barack Obama Jr. in Hawaii and that neither Queens Medical Center nor Kapi'olani Medical Center in Honolulu had any record of Obama having been born in their medical facilities. Adams' affidavit continues, "Senior officers in the City and County of Honolulu Elections Division told me on multiple occasions that no Hawaii long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate existed for Senator Obama in the Hawaii Department of Health and there was no record that any such document had ever been on file in the Hawaii Department of Health or any other branch or department of the Hawaii government." ...

What Has Obama Said About His Own Birth?

Jack Cashill -- American Thinker

In his 1995 memoir Dreams from My Father, Obama made the same claim. "He had left Hawaii back in 1963," he wrote of Obama Sr., "when I was only two years old." When Obama wrote this in Dreams, he may have been relating what he had himself been told. By 2009, he knew better, but so vested was he in the story, and so useful had it been in his rise, that he continued to dissemble, even before millions of schoolchildren. There are clues in Dreams, however, which suggest that Obama was creating a fiction for future use that he already knew to be untrue. ...

Stories You May Have Missed In Our Previous Issues

At the request of some of our readers, discerning and literate bunch that you all are, commencing with the May 1, 2008 issue we began archiving the March Report in a form suitable for presentation. Be advised that some of the links to external sites on the archived pages will have gone dead. Morte. Kaputski. Please report broken links to us using our "Rants & Raves" form by clicking here. Archives will be deleted as the page itself becomes useless (assuming that it wasn't to begin with, which may be presumptuous in and of itself).

Rants & Raves from Our Readers

A reader who wishes to remain anonymous sent in this criticism:

Mr. March, You linked the video of Hillary Clinton having what has been referred to as an 'outburst' on your site, yet, you did not explain the context. You omitted the truth and presented the situation as another crazy Clinton moment. You not only misportrayed the situation, you lost an opportunity to share/address the plight of women who have no rights in their country. I have been a long time reader of your March Report and have shared the Report with many people. I wrote to you addressing the Clinton video and have seen no retraction or explanation. I won't be referring anyone to this page anymore. My belief and trust that you maintain objectivity and research all sides has been permanently altered recently. Consevative or not, you have always seemed to work at being fair and true to journalism. I now am seeing you differently.

    Robert Jay March Responds:

This reader has mischaracterized the report. In fact, we went out of way to add clarity to the situation. The copy proved by WMAQ-TV, the televsion station which provide the report through one of our syndicators, said "A Congolese university student seems to presume that Bill Clinton's opinion is more important than the current Secretary of State's." In order to portray the situation accurately, we rewrote the copy to read as follows (emphasis added): "As a result of a translator's error, a Congolese university student appears to presume that Bill Clinton's opinion is more important than the current Secretary of State's. Hillary explodes, and hilarity ensues. Oh, those wacky, wacky Clintons." That was all the information that was available on August 11, 2009, when we ran the story. Witty retort aside, we went out of our way to clarify the report. Further details from the State Department and the White House did not become available until the following day.

Another reader, who wish to be referred to by the nom de plume "Needles," has an unusual take on the Certifi-Gate crisis:

The birthers need to step back and consider the consequences of their actions. If Mr. Obama were to be declared ineligible, there are several possible outcomes. They could remove him from office and install Joe Biden as President. The argument would be made that if Mr. Obama was not eligible to run for President, then the ticket is invalid as well and Joe Biden should not be Vice President. The next person in the order of succession would be Speaker of the House; Nancy Pelosi. Because no eligible candidate received a majority of electoral votes, the selection of the President could be thrown into the House. Speaker Nancy Pelosi, would then be king-maker. The choices are Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi or someone Nancy Pelosi picks. Maybe it is best to leave the birth certificate matter alone.

    Robert Jay March Responds:

Mr. Obama being declared ineligible does not legally invalidate Biden's election, provided he is qualified. Even if it did, the Constitution is too important to ignore; it is all that separates us from tyranny. Regardless of the consequences, if in fact Mr. Obama is ineligible, he must be removed. That said, all we have thus far is the preponderance of evidence leading to a likely conclusion, not conclusive facts. That is why the revelation of the long-form birth certificate is so important.

Finally, a third reader who wish to be referred to by the nom de plume "unihawker," writes:

Dear Mr. March, I was watching TV the other night and they showed a clip of Obama in Kenya during his trip there during the campaign. I am not sure if it was just some Freudian slip or not, but he said as he was waiving to the people greeting him, "Thank you, it is great to be back home". My question was, If he was not born in that country why would he call it home?

    Robert Jay March Responds:

Good question, for which I have no answer. If this report is correct, it is yet another contribution to the preponderance of evidence that implies Mr. Obama is ineligible. A copy of the long form birth certificate would cost Mr. Obama $12; thus far he has spent $1.3 Million to avoid producing it. As in any investigation, follow the money: in this case, what money is being spent on to conceal.
