Stephen Hawking vs. God

Jim Wilson -- Redding Record Searchlight

Hawking proclaims two mutually excluding propositions in his book, "The Grand Design" according to fellow physicist Dr. Ben Wiker. On the one hand he declares that all existing theories of the origins of the universe are as subjective as they are non-comprehensive. On the other he states that these theories are comprehensive enough - and objective enough - to prove that God neither exists nor is necessary for the existence of everything else. The problem? You cannot have it both ways. If a theory is subjective it is tainted by having been processed through an intellectual lens that sees only what the viewer is prepared in advance to admit. Likewise, if it is not comprehensive it cannot entertain all of the relevant data and so cannot make comprehensive statements. But the declaration that God does not exist is both an objective and a comprehensive statement. It is -- in this case -- a desperate attempt to escape the prime implication of the Big Bang, that there is out there a Big Banger.

John And Abigail Adams: A Marriage That Defied Separation And War

Michiko Kakuta -- New York Times

Although the gender politics of the day did not afford Abigail Adams the opportunities enjoyed by later generations of women, she was John Adams's closest adviser and sounding board before, during and after the Revolutionary War. During his long absences from home, Abigail managed the family farm, oversaw their finances and raised their children. Later, during his diplomatic postings in Paris and London and his tenure as president, she assumed a more public role, so much so that the historian Joseph J. Ellis writes in his new book, "First Family: Abigail and John Adams," that "they were effectively regarded as a political team" -- or as one television dramatization of their lives more crudely put it, "America's first power couple."

When John Waters Met Little Richard

John Waters -- Guardian (UK)

In 1987, the iconic filmmaker John Waters was sent by Playboy magazine to interview his all-time hero: Little Richard. It was a surreal, almost religious experience for John who had been a lifelong fan of the godfather of rock'n'roll. So why did it almost end in a fistfight? All is revealed in this excerpt from Waters' new book, Role Models.

"America By Heart": A Harsh Critique Of Obama By Sarah Palin

Michael Falcone -- ABC News (US)

Video AND TEXT. In the book, "America by Heart: Reflections on Family, Faith, and Flag", Palin accuses Obama of misunderstanding the American people. "The epitome of progressive thinking was Barack Obama's promise, just before the 2008 election, that 'we are five days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America,'" Palin writes in the book. "I guess you could say that he warned us! But the problem is that Americans don't want a fundamental transformation of their country." Palin portrays herself as a modern-day Jefferson Smith, the character played by Jimmy Stewart in the iconic film, "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," which she says is her favorite movie.

The Battles For Late Night

Louis Menand -- New Yorker

The Leno-O'Brien debacle might not have happened if Jay Leno had used representation. As Bill Carter tells the story in his hugely entertaining recap, The War for Late Night: When Leno Went Early and Television Went Crazy, Leno fired his manager in 1992, shortly after taking over from Johnny Carson as host of the "Tonight Show." Leno believed that his manager had said things to poison his relationship with Carson. As it was, David Letterman, who, as the host of "Late Night," had been following Carson for eleven years and was considered the heir apparent, felt resentment about being passed over for Leno, whose reputation had been built partly on his many guest appearances on "Late Night." Leno was professional to the core, but he did not want business to ruin friendship. He never used a manager or an agent for his contract renewals again.

Bush: 'Damn Right' I Gave The Go-Ahead On Waterboarding Terror Suspect

Alex Eichler -- Atlantic Monthly

In George W. Bush's new memoir, Decision Points, the former president explains that the CIA approached him about the possibility of waterboarding Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the al-Qaeda operative often called "the architect of 9/11." In his memoir, Bush writes that his response was "Damn right." This seems to be a straightforward admission that Bush approved the use of waterboarding on a detainee--even though this technique is widely regarded as inhumane, and its use is thought by many to violate the United Nations Convention Against Torture, of which the United States is a signatory. (In media outside the U.S., waterboarding is almost always referred to as torture.)

Review Of Bob Woodward's New Book, "Obama's Wars"

Michiko Kakutani -- New York Times

It's no secret that there have been ferocious arguments within the Obama administration over the war in Afghanistan: both substantive policy debates. Bob Woodward's new book, "Obama's Wars," underscores just how vociferous and highly personal those altercations and message wars often became. Mr. Woodward adds lots of detail and anecdotal color to the story of how the White House's policy on Afghanistan evolved over the administration's first 18 months, and how the decision was made to send 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan (to try to wrest momentum away from a resurgent Taliban) with a drawdown of American forces scheduled to begin in July 2011.

Peter Hitchens Talks About His Faith And His Atheist Sibling Christopher

Charles Lewis -- National Post

Almost everyone knows how his elder brother Christopher Hitchens feels, but less well known are the views of Peter Hitchens, a conservative columnist for the The Mail on Sunday in London, who was inspired to write his latest book, The Rage Against God: How Atheism Led Me to Faith, because of the "dangerous" teachings of men like his brother. It is not a faith book, at least not in the conventional sense of defending doctrine or even making a philosophical case for God. The book is devoid of "faith talk"; the name Jesus does not appear once in the book. "Remember, I'm an ex-Trotskyite, so I'm quite suspicious of the man of total conviction and certainty. What I did not want, coming away from Marxist utopianism, was to find another mirror image of utopianism," he said. "The argument I'm making for religion is largely a negative one: if you get rid of [God] you will be in a tremendous fix."

Bozo The Clown: "The Man Behind The Nose"

Philip Potempa -- Northwest Indiana Times

Did you hear the one about when Bozo ran for president? Or how two assassination attempts were made on his life? How about the time that Bozo flew into the jungles of New Guinea to see if he could bond with dangerous cannibal tribes? Well then, you must know about the time his size 83 AAA shoes saved him from being swallowed whole by a giant, murderous python in Thailand, right? These are just a few of the "prizes" plucked from "The Man Behind the Nose: Assassins, Astronauts, Cannibals, and Other Stupendous Tales," (HarperCollins $25.99) a new 256-page hardcover by Susan Harmon, widow of Larry Harmon, the man credited with creating "the world's most famous clown. The book, released in time for Bozo's 50th anniversary, was co-authored by Thomas Scott McKenzie. The late Larry Harmon reportedly drafted most of the book before his death.

New Book Celebrates George Herriman's Krazy Kat

Doug MacCash -- Times-Picayune

Video AND TEXT. "George Herriman's Krazy Kat, A Celebration of Sundays" is a dynamite introduction to one of the most dysfunctional duos ever found on the funny pages. It's also a book-shelf must-have for anyone devoted to jazz-era expression. But beneath the quirky comedy of the antique cartoon, Herriman's real life story is a disquieting detour through the bad ol' days of American race relations that begins in the Treme neighborhood of New Orleans. Starting exactly 100 years ago (July 26, 1910), Ignatz the cartoon mouse began hurling bricks at the head of his Coconino County neighbor, Krazy Kat. Zip! Pow! It's no wonder that a mouse, given the chance, would torment a cat. Here's the weird thing: For the next 34 years, Krazy Kat fell more deeply in love with Ignatz with each beaning. Try as he might, police officer Pupp could do nothing to dampen either Ignatz's violent obsession or Krazy's misplaced ardor for the mouse that he or she (we're never quite sure of Krazy's sex) called "L'il Anjil."

Fight Over Evolution Still Simmers 85 Years After Scopes Trial

Bob Smietana -- The Tennessean

Rachel Held Evans had a choice while growing up in Dayton, Tenn., site of the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial. Believe the Bible or believe evolution. "I was taught that if you don't interpret Genesis 1 and 2 literally, then you don't take the Bible seriously," said Evans, 29. "I held on tightly to that for a long time." Evans says creationism -- the belief that God created the Earth around 6,000 years ago in six days -- was commonplace in her town. Unable to reconcile science with her faith, Evans embraced evolution. "I learned you don't have to choose between loving and following Jesus and believing in evolution," she said. She chronicled her personal journey in a new memoir, Evolving in Monkey Town: How a Girl Who Knew All the Answers Learned to Ask the Questions.

CNN anchor and reporter, Anderson Cooper, was attacked in Cairo, Wednesday. Cooper and his team were walking in Tahrir square through a large crowd of Mubarak supporters when the scene turned ugly. When he then began to attack Cooper's crew, people in the crowd began to join in, at which point the team decided to leave the square.  Mubarak Reveals A Brutal Plan To Hold Power

Tony Karon -- Time Magazine

And if the army was willing to see Mubarak make a dignified exit while keeping the political reform process in friendly hands - most importantly, those of Vice President and intelligence chief Omar Suleiman - the regime's hardcore support base is even more determined not to see him ejected from office just yet. Many of the thugs attacking protesters turned out to have been policemen or their family members, but that in itself was a reminder that there are tens of thousands of Egyptians deeply invested in a brutal regime they have served as enforcers on the ground, and many are fearful enough of losing its protection that they're willing to spill Egyptian blood, as they always have been, to keep their paymasters in place. ...

Egyptian security forces are arresting demonstrators as clashes continue between supporters of President Hosni Mubarak and his opponents who want him to go now. The latest violence has killed at least five people and injured hundreds.  The West Must Be Wary Of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood

Benny Morris -- Guardian (UK)

Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood is playing a canny political game -- and its objective -- let no one doubt this -- is to take power. For now, the Brotherhood will be satisfied with toppling the hated Mubarak regime, which, following the Gamal Abdel Nasser (1954-1970) and Anwar Sadat (1970-1981) regimes, has serially imprisoned and tortured the Brotherhood's cadres for decades. Above all, the organization no doubt wants the prospective interim regime to organise and oversee free and fair general elections, say in six months' time. But once the campaigning for these elections gets under way, we will see the country awash with Muslim Brotherhood activists and placards, broadcasts and sermons; perhaps even a measure of intimidation and violence. The Brotherhood's aim is to take over the state through the democratic process, and is likely, as one of its first acts, to annul Egypt's 1979 peace treaty with Israel. ...

YEST Egyptians Sense They Are Part Of A Turning Point In History

Will Englund -- Washington Post

As thousands upon thousands of demonstrators converged Tuesday on Tahrir Square, and spilled over onto the streets that flow into it, the chants and signs were about their desire to be rid of President Hosni Mubarak. But the mood at times seemed to be one of surprise as much as anything else -- surprise that they could do this. And as more people kept pouring in throughout the day, it was clear that a contagion had set in. This was a place to be, this was a moment not to be afraid of -- and even without the benefit of social media, cut off by the government, the message went out through Cairo by word of mouth, what businessman Hatem Azzam called "the oldest, simplest way." Even deep into the evening, a dwindling crowd remained, joined in derision as Mubarak announced that he would not be seeking reelection. "We demand his ouster and his sentencing," said Mahmoud Ibrahim, while others waved shoes in the air, a traditional Arab sign of disrespect. ...

Hugh Jackman To Wolverine Fans: "The Planets Are Finally Aligned To Make A Great Movie"

Geoff Boucher -- Los Angeles Times

Hugh Jackman: "We finally have the character and with this mythology -- ever since [the 2000 Bryan Singer film] 'X-Men,' when I was kind of hanging around and reading all these comics, because I was cast before I ever read any X-Men comics, so I was trying to get my hands on everything. I remember saying to [producer] Lauren Shuler Donner, 'Lauren, I don't know about you, but I've seen this Japanese story, and I think it's so good. It's just genius, it's brilliant.' And we kind of always talked about it from there on. I sort of even wanted to do that in the third X-Men movie at first, but we thought, no, we really need to establish who he is at first, and we did that [with 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine'], and now this is sort of the cherry on top, to finally do it and have Darren Aronofsky direct it. I love his gung-ho attitude toward it and great vision. Straight off, it's not a sequel, it's a stand-alone, and I think we're going to make one that people will describe as the best of the bunch." ...

Al Jazeera English's leading coverage of the uprising in Egypt is giving it new ammunition in its long-running battle against a TV blackout in the US. Although it is broadcast in 200 million homes around the world, cable and satellite-TV companies have shut the Qatar-based news organization out of the US market, fearing political repercussions and the loss of viewers. Despite launching in 2006, the channel is available on just a handful of cable systems. Media critic Jeff Jarvis is leading a campaign to get cable companies to add Al Jazeera English, likening its on-the-ground reporting to CNN's breakout coverage during the first Gulf War. ...

Don't Panic! It's Only The Internet Running Out Of Addresses

Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols -- ZD Net

The various Internet management groups made it official this morning. We're now out of Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) Internet address blocks. The final five blocks of IPv4 addresses were given out to the five Regional Internet Registries (RIR), which, in turn, will distribute these IP addresses to ISPs. That puts about 80-million more IPv4 addresses in play, but once they're gone, they gone: IPv4 game over. What does that mean for you? Well, in the short run, nothing if you're an ordinary user. If you're a CIO, network engineer or administrator, you've got to start getting switch to over to IPv6. IPv6, with its 128-bit addresses, won't be running out of addresses any time this century. ...

World's Oldest Person Dies: But Eunice Sanborn's Family Claim She Is A Year Older Than The 114 Years And 195 Days Recorded

Daily Mirror (UK)

While an organization which tracks and verifies supercentenarians listed Mrs Sanborn's age as 114, her family claims the U.S. Census Bureau erroneously recorded her birth year as 1896 rather than 1895. As a result the avid church-goer celebrated her 115th birthday on July 20. Mrs Sanborn, who outlived three husbands, had only held the title of the oldest person in the world for less than three months following the death of Eugenie Blanchard, a French nun who lived on the Caribbean Island of Saint Barthelemy. ...

An Inconvenient Lie

Climate Change Claims Melt Away

Investor's Business Daily

In 2007, the U.N. said the Himalayan glaciers will be gone by 2035 due to man-made global warming. Turns out, though, that the claim was nonsense. It was not based on scientific research but on one scientist's guesswork, which was lifted from a telephone interview. New research indicates that half of the glaciers in the Himalaya's Karakoram range are advancing. Scientists from the University of California Santa Barbara and the University of Potsdam, who cited "erroneous reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change," strongly suggest that the "settled" science is not so clear. ...

Oh No, Not Another Unbiased Documentary About 'Climate Change'

James Delingpole -- Guardian (UK)

The "consensus" on 'Climate Change' exaggerates the number of scientists who believe in Man Made Global Warming and it grotesquely underestimates the number who have many good reasons for suspecting that there is far, far more to "Climate Change" than anthropogenic CO2. What's more such "consensus" as there is is an artificial construct. It has not been subjected to the rigour of an open or even semi-open market. It is the creation, almost entirely, of politically-driven funding from US government, from various UN bodies, from the EU, from left-leaning charitable foundations on a scale unprecedented in the history of science. So far, in real terms, no less than five times the amount of the Manhattan Project has been squandered on research into AGW. For that kind of money you can buy an awful lot of scientists prepared to suspend any belief they might have that global warming is anything other than man-made. ...

More Than 1000 International Scientists Dissent Over Man-Made Global Warming Claims

Climate Depot

PDF File More than 1,000 dissenting scientists (updates previous 700 scientist report) from around the globe have now challenged man-made global warming claims made by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and former Vice President Al Gore. This new 2010 321-page Climate Depot Special Report -- updated from the 2007 groundbreaking U.S. Senate Report of over 400 scientists who voiced skepticism about the so-called global warming-consensus -- features the skeptical voices of over 1,000 international scientists, including many current and former UN IPCC scientists, who have now turned against the UN IPCC. This updated 2010 report includes a dramatic increase of over 300 additional (and growing) scientists and climate researchers since the last update in March 2009. ...

Lieberman, Collins Slam DoD, FBI For Fort Hood Shooting

Brian Bolduc -- National Review Online

The federal government needs to drop the political correctness and call violent Islamic extremism what it is, according to a newly released report on the Fort Hood shooting by the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs. "Our report's painful conclusion is that the Fort Hood massacre could have and should have been prevented," Lieberman said. He added that employees at the Department of Defense "had compelling evidence of [Hasan's] growing embrace of violent Islamic extremism before the attack that should have caused them to discharge him." ...

Losing A Repeal Vote, But Winning The War Against Obama Care

Jennifer Rubin -- Washington Post

The amendment to repeal Obama Care failed in the Senate by a 51-47 vote. That vote was along party lines. Democrats may claim they "won," but will they in the long run? The reality is beginning to dawn on those who've been ignoring conservative legal scholars and commentators that Obama's "historic bill" is in a precarious position. Democrats also have their hands full with the politics of Obama Care. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) showed how easy it is to force votes in the Senate and vowed to keep at it, while introducing Republican alternatives. A McConnell spokesman said last night: "Every Democrat in the Senate is on record as supporting the health-spending bill, even as a growing chorus of Americans are calling on them to repeal it. And every Republican in Congress has now kept their promise to the American people -- even as the bill's implementation continues to break the promises Democrats made about what the bill would do." Those Americans can also be referred to as "constituents," whose votes in 2012 will determine the fate of Democratic senators who don't reflect voters' views. ...

House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan announced plans to seek to cut government spending by $35 billion from last year's levels as Republicans backed away from promises to cut spending more deeply. After deliberating for weeks, Ryan said today he and other Republican leaders will propose cutting the portion of the fiscal 2011 budget funding non-security-related discretionary programs by $43 billion from 2010 levels. At the same time, they plan to boost spending this year on defense, homeland security and veterans programs by $8 billion. ...

YEST Obama Presses Mubarak To Move "Now"

Karen DeYoung -- Washington Post

Barack Obama, clearly frustrated by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's intention to retain his hold on power until elections later this year, said Tuesday evening that he has told Mubarak that a transition to representative government "must begin now." In brief remarks at the White House, Obama made no mention of Mubarak's announcement that he had decided not to stand for reelection. Instead, Obama said he had told the Egyptian president in a telephone call that this was a "moment of transformation" in Egypt and that "the status quo is not sustainable." Obama's message appeared carefully calibrated to avoid publicly calling for Mubarak to stand down, while making clear he should stand aside. See related story in today's WORLD Section. ...

YEST Senate Republicans Plan To Force Vote This Week On Health-Care Repeal

Felicia Sonmez -- Washington Post

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Tuesday introduced a measure aimed at repealing the national health-care overhaul as an amendment to the first Senate bill of the new Congress. McConnell proposed the repeal measure as an amendment to a Federal Aviation Administration funding bill. The move came one day after a federal judge in Florida ruled that Congress had overstepped its authority by mandating insurance for nearly all Americans. A vote could come as early as Wednesday, according to a Senate Democratic leadership aide. ...

YEST Could The Senate Flip In 2012?

Jay Newton-Small -- Time Magazine

On the face of it, Democrats have a tough cycle ahead of them. They hold the Senate with 53 seats right now, meaning Republicans only need to flip four to capture the majority -- not an impossibly steep order. Of the 33 seats up next November Democrats hold 23. The non-partisan Cook Political Report already rates six of those -- Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Virginia and West Virginia -- toss up. Another three -- Florida, Missouri and Ohio - are in trouble. Five of these eight vulnerable seats are in states President Obama lost in 2008, rendering his coattails very short. Senate Dems have gotten off to sluggish starts in recruitment and fundraising. Thus far only two Democrats, North Dakota's Kent Conrad and Joe Lieberman of Connecticut (who is an Independent who caucuses with the Dems), have announced their retirements. But Jim Webb in Virginia is mum on his plans for reelection and there's speculation that Nebraska's Ben Nelson may not run again -- both tough states for Dems in 2012. Republicans, on the other hand, have recruited some pretty good candidates already. ...

Bernanke: More Jobs Needed For Real Recovery

Associated Press

The economy is strengthening, and will likely grow at a faster pace this year as more confident consumers and companies spend more, Bernanke said in prepared remarks to the National Press Club. But he warned that the growth won't be strong enough to quickly drive down high unemployment, and it could take several years before it returns to more normal levels. "Until we see a sustained period of stronger job creation, we cannot consider the recovery to be truly established," he said. ...

Therapy doesn't help, pills don't work, and it's easy to assume you'll be stuck with your fatal flaws for ever. But what if there was a way of digging deep into your memory to find out just what was causing the problems - so deep that you look at what happened to you in your past lives?  Mubarak's Regime Feels Obama Is Pushing The Advancement Of The Muslim Brotherhood Against U.S. Interests

World Net Daily

Top members of the Egyptian government say they feel betrayed by President Obama, charging that he is acting against American interests. Obama in recent days urged Mubarak to give up power in Egypt, where the Muslim Brotherhood forms the main opposition. Mubarak has been a staunch U.S. ally and a recipient of billions of dollars in military aid. His regime has long been considered a stabilizing force in the Arab world. ...

Obama Blaming Others For His Failures

Michael Goodwin -- New York Post

When word got out that Barack Obama told an interviewer he had learned from his mistakes, the grandees of the political class swarmed to the bait. Like primitive mystics "reading" the entrails of a sacrificial animal, they began dissecting his comments to divine whether the president is signaling a course change after the election. No, he's not going to change. Why mess with perfection? Obama thinks he did everything right and nothing wrong. And he remains stuck on blaming others, including voters, the media, Republicans, Washington, and impossible-to-please liberals. In short, nearly halfway through his term, Obama still doesn't get it. He's clueless about his massive failures, which means, if he's given the chance, we can expect more of them. ...

Eric Alterman -- Daily Beast

In case you hadn't heard, yes Barack Obama did go before a $30,000-per-person Democratic National Committee fundraiser in Greenwich, Connecticut -- the hedge-fund capital of the world -- and (at the home, I kid you not, of a guy named "Rich Richman" ) complain about how silly his base was being. If you get the financial-reform bill passed -- then, well, I don't know about this particular derivatives rule, I'm not sure that I'm satisfied with that. And gosh, we haven't yet brought about world peace and -- (laughter.) I thought that was going to happen quicker." (Laughter.) With your own party heading for disaster in the polls, a number of its candidates are running away from you faster than you can say, "You really considered this guy for vice president?" ...

YEST Now, Chris Matthews Says Obama Doesn't Have Long-Form Birth Certificate

Bob Unruh -- World Net Daily

Video AND TEXT. MSNBC's "Hardball" host Chris Matthews, who earlier announced he is the "enemy of birthers" but said even so he thinks Barack Obama should release his birth certificate, now has suggested that the online, computer-generated image of a Certification of Live Birth from Hawaii is the only document Obama has. Earlier, he was addressing Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie's statement that he was going to chase down Obama's original state birth certificate to prove his eligibility. At the time, Matthews said, "I don't understand why doesn't the president just say send me a copy right now É let's get this crappy story dead." Abercrombie later said, according to his friend radio personality Mike Evans, that the document doesn't exist and expressed concern that the controversy will be a major issue for Obama during his planned 2012 presidential re-election campaign. Evans related how Abercrombie had taken over the governor's office assuming he'd be able to clear things up, but then couldn't find the records he was seeking. "Abercrombie was probably more shocked than anybody," Evans said. ...

Anyone would be able to get a copy of Barack Obama's birth records for a $100 fee under a bill introduced in the state Legislature that backers hope will finally dispel claims he was born elsewhere. The bill would change a privacy law barring the release of birth records unless the requester is someone with a tangible interest, such as a close family member. The measure was introduced by five Democrats but has not yet been scheduled for a public hearing, a required step before it can move forward. Hawaii Official Signs Affidavit Declaring Obama Birth Certificate Does Not Exist

Jerome R. Corsi -- World Net Daily

Former Hawaii elections clerk Tim Adams has now signed an affidavit swearing he was told by his supervisors in Hawaii that no long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate existed for Barack Obama Jr. in Hawaii and that neither Queens Medical Center nor Kapi'olani Medical Center in Honolulu had any record of Obama having been born in their medical facilities. "During the course of my employment," Adams swears in the affidavit, "I became aware that many requests were being made to the City and County of Honolulu Elections Division, the Hawaii Office of Elections, and the Hawaii Department of Health from around the country to obtain a copy of then-Senator Barack Obama's long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate." Adams' affidavit continues, "Senior officers in the City and County of Honolulu Elections Division told me on multiple occasions that no Hawaii long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate existed for Senator Obama in the Hawaii Department of Health and there was no record that any such document had ever been on file in the Hawaii Department of Health or any other branch or department of the Hawaii government." ...

What Has Obama Said About His Own Birth?

Jack Cashill -- American Thinker

In his 1995 memoir Dreams from My Father, Obama made the same claim. "He had left Hawaii back in 1963," he wrote of Obama Sr., "when I was only two years old." When Obama wrote this in Dreams, he may have been relating what he had himself been told. By 2009, he knew better, but so vested was he in the story, and so useful had it been in his rise, that he continued to dissemble, even before millions of schoolchildren. There are clues in Dreams, however, which suggest that Obama was creating a fiction for future use that he already knew to be untrue. ...

Stories You May Have Missed In Our Previous Issues

At the request of some of our readers, discerning and literate bunch that you all are, commencing with the May 1, 2008 issue we began archiving the March Report in a form suitable for presentation. Be advised that some of the links to external sites on the archived pages will have gone dead. Morte. Kaputski. Please report broken links to us using our "Rants & Raves" form by clicking here. Archives will be deleted as the page itself becomes useless (assuming that it wasn't to begin with, which may be presumptuous in and of itself).

Rants & Raves from Our Readers

A reader who wishes to remain anonymous sent in this criticism:

Mr. March, You linked the video of Hillary Clinton having what has been referred to as an 'outburst' on your site, yet, you did not explain the context. You omitted the truth and presented the situation as another crazy Clinton moment. You not only misportrayed the situation, you lost an opportunity to share/address the plight of women who have no rights in their country. I have been a long time reader of your March Report and have shared the Report with many people. I wrote to you addressing the Clinton video and have seen no retraction or explanation. I won't be referring anyone to this page anymore. My belief and trust that you maintain objectivity and research all sides has been permanently altered recently. Consevative or not, you have always seemed to work at being fair and true to journalism. I now am seeing you differently.

    Robert Jay March Responds:

This reader has mischaracterized the report. In fact, we went out of way to add clarity to the situation. The copy proved by WMAQ-TV, the televsion station which provide the report through one of our syndicators, said "A Congolese university student seems to presume that Bill Clinton's opinion is more important than the current Secretary of State's." In order to portray the situation accurately, we rewrote the copy to read as follows (emphasis added): "As a result of a translator's error, a Congolese university student appears to presume that Bill Clinton's opinion is more important than the current Secretary of State's. Hillary explodes, and hilarity ensues. Oh, those wacky, wacky Clintons." That was all the information that was available on August 11, 2009, when we ran the story. Witty retort aside, we went out of our way to clarify the report. Further details from the State Department and the White House did not become available until the following day.

Another reader, who wish to be referred to by the nom de plume "Needles," has an unusual take on the Certifi-Gate crisis:

The birthers need to step back and consider the consequences of their actions. If Mr. Obama were to be declared ineligible, there are several possible outcomes. They could remove him from office and install Joe Biden as President. The argument would be made that if Mr. Obama was not eligible to run for President, then the ticket is invalid as well and Joe Biden should not be Vice President. The next person in the order of succession would be Speaker of the House; Nancy Pelosi. Because no eligible candidate received a majority of electoral votes, the selection of the President could be thrown into the House. Speaker Nancy Pelosi, would then be king-maker. The choices are Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi or someone Nancy Pelosi picks. Maybe it is best to leave the birth certificate matter alone.

    Robert Jay March Responds:

Mr. Obama being declared ineligible does not legally invalidate Biden's election, provided he is qualified. Even if it did, the Constitution is too important to ignore; it is all that separates us from tyranny. Regardless of the consequences, if in fact Mr. Obama is ineligible, he must be removed. That said, all we have thus far is the preponderance of evidence leading to a likely conclusion, not conclusive facts. That is why the revelation of the long-form birth certificate is so important.

Finally, a third reader who wish to be referred to by the nom de plume "unihawker," writes:

Dear Mr. March, I was watching TV the other night and they showed a clip of Obama in Kenya during his trip there during the campaign. I am not sure if it was just some Freudian slip or not, but he said as he was waiving to the people greeting him, "Thank you, it is great to be back home". My question was, If he was not born in that country why would he call it home?

    Robert Jay March Responds:

Good question, for which I have no answer. If this report is correct, it is yet another contribution to the preponderance of evidence that implies Mr. Obama is ineligible. A copy of the long form birth certificate would cost Mr. Obama $12; thus far he has spent $1.3 Million to avoid producing it. As in any investigation, follow the money: in this case, what money is being spent on to conceal.
