As Bill Carter tells the story in his hugely entertaining recap, The War for Late Night: When Leno Went Early and Television Went Crazy, Leno fired his manager in 1992, shortly after taking over from Johnny Carson as host of the "Tonight Show." Leno believed that his manager had said things to poison his relationship with Carson. As it was, David Letterman, who, as the host of "Late Night," had been following Carson for eleven years and was considered the heir apparent, felt resentment about being passed over for Leno, whose reputation had been built partly on his many guest appearances on "Late Night." Leno was professional to the core, but he did not want business to ruin friendship. He never used a manager or an agent for his contract renewals again.

This seems to be a straightforward admission that Bush approved the use of waterboarding on a detainee--even though this technique is widely regarded as inhumane, and its use is thought by many to violate the United Nations Convention Against Torture, of which the United States is a signatory. (In media outside the U.S., waterboarding is almost always referred to as torture.)

Peter Hitchens Talks About His Faith And His Atheist Sibling Christopher

Almost everyone knows how his elder brother Christopher Hitchens feels, but less well known are the views of Peter Hitchens, a conservative columnist for the The Mail on Sunday in London, who was inspired to write his latest book, The Rage Against God: How Atheism Led Me to Faith, because of the "dangerous" teachings of men like his brother. A schoolboy armed with a gun held nearly two dozen students and a teacher hostage in a high school for about five hours before shooting himself when police broke into the classroom. Officers who were outside the Marinette High School classroom in Wisconsin said they heard three gunshots shortly after 8pm and broke down the door, Police Chief Jeff Skorik said. The 15-year-old male gunman then shot himself. ...

 Authorities in Marinette, Wisconsin say a 15-year-old high school student who took 23 of his schoolmates and a teacher hostage shot himself after officers approached his classroom. His condition has not been disclosed. No one else was injured. ...

"Why did he hold people hostage for six hours?" Crivitz resident Jeff Moeller wondered inside the Main Street tavern before turning up the volume on a 1 a.m. news broadcast. In a report posted online by the journal Nature in advance of print publication, researchers led by Ronald A. DePinho, a Harvard Medical School (HMS) professor of genetics, said they achieved the milestone in aging science by engineering mice with a controllable telomerase gene. The telomerase enzyme maintains the protective caps called telomeres that shield the ends of chromosomes. Importantly, the animals showed no signs of developing cancer. This remains a concern because cancer cells turn on telomerase to make themselves virtually immortal. ...

 New Guidelines Urge Vitamin D Boost, But Not Megadose

According to the new recommendations, which are used in creating food-nutrition labels and setting nutritional standards for school meals, most people 70 and under need no more than 600 international units of vitamin D a day to maintain good bone health. That's up from the 200 to 400 units previously recommended by the Institute of Medicine. People older than 70 need more, the institute now says -- 800 units. It also raised the upper safe limit for vitamin D consumption to 4,000 units -- from 2,000. To give the recommendations some perspective, one cup of fortified orange juice contains 100 units of vitamin D. ...

The Climate Mafia Gather In Cancun

It is time for the U.S. government to acknowledge that a climate mafia has existed since the gathering in Kyoto, Japan, to establish the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The December 11, 1997 treaty was, upon ratification, to go into force on February 16, 2005. Its expressed purpose was to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for the purpose of avoiding "global warming," but its real purpose was to create an entirely bogus system of emissions trading to be known as "the carbon market." On July 25, 1997, the U.S. Senate, responsible for the ratification of international treaties, unanimously passed (95-0) a resolution rejecting the Kyoto Treaty on the grounds that it "would result in serious harm to the economy of the United States." As this is written, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is striving to secure authorization to regulate GHG emissions despite massive evidence that they pose no threat to the environment and despite the fact that this authority would, as in 1997, cripple and likely destroy an already ailing economy. ...

Interpol has issued a "Red Notice" for the founder of the whistle-blowing website Wikileaks, Julian Assange. Instead, it asks people to contact the police if they have any information about his whereabouts. Meanwhile, Ecuador's President Rafael Correa has said he did not approve an offer of residency made to Mr Assange. ...

On Oct. 10, to celebrate its 65th anniversary as a one-party state, North Korea unveiled a new missile in the type of military parade that for decades has been a hallmark of authoritarian regimes. The North Koreans call the missile the Musudan. The Musudan is now playing a starring role in reports this week prompted by WikiLeaks' release of U.S. diplomatic cables. One of the documents says that Iran has obtained 19 of the missiles from North Korea, prompting news reports suggesting that the Islamic Republic can hit targets in Western Europe and deep into Russia -- farther than Iran's existing missiles can strike.The problem, however, is that there is no indication that the Musudan, also known as the BM-25, is operational or that it has ever been tested. ...

Pressure was today mounting on WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange as the fallout from the release of thousands of classified U.S. documents was felt around the world. The U.S. has opened a criminal investigation into whether the 39-year-old could be charged under its Espionage Act for releasing secret diplomatic documents. And he is facing a separate criminal inquiry in his native Australia where police are investigating whether the latest leak has broken any local laws. Mr Assange, who is believed to be in London, is already facing a criminal investigation in Sweden where two women have accused him of rape. ...

Deputy Foreign Minister Kintto Lucas said his country's government wanted to invite Mr Assange to Ecuador to give him the opportunity to speak publicly. He said Ecuador was concerned about some of the alleged American activities revealed by Wikileaks. Earlier this year Sweden refused an application from Mr Assange, who is Australian, for residency there. "We are open to giving him residency in Ecuador, without any problem and without any conditions," Mr Lucas said. "We are going to try and invite him to Ecuador to freely present, not only via the internet, but also through different public forums, the information and documentation that he has," he said. ...

China has signalled its readiness to accept Korean reunification and is privately distancing itself from the North Korean regime, according to leaked US embassy cables that reveal senior Beijing figures regard their official ally as a "spoiled child." Beijing's frustration with Pyongyang has grown since its missile and nuclear tests last year, worries about the economic impact of regional instability, and fears that the death of the dictator, Kim Jong-il, could spark a succession struggle. ...

U.S. diplomats have cast doubts on the reliability of NATO ally Turkey, portraying its leadership as divided and permeated by Islamists. Washington describes Ankara as a trusted ally publicly. But hundreds of thousands of State Department documents leaked Sunday paint a different picture. U.S. Embassy officials in Ankara describe the Islamist tendencies in the government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and say it is unlikely to become a member of the 27-bloc European Union in the future. ...

The incident, which constitutes the worst day for Nato casualties since October, is the latest example of Afghan policemen and soldiers turning on their foreign military partners, a tactic that the Taliban has claimed credit for. It will once again raise questions about the policy of seeking to expand Afghan forces as rapidly as possible in preparation for the end of 2014 when Nato's combat mission in the country is supposed to come to an end. Officials in Afghanistan were unable today to say whether insurgents were responsible for the attack during a training exercise in the eastern province of Nangahar. The Taliban did not make any immediate attempt to claim credit. The gunman himself was killed in the incident. ...

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu supports "the concept of land swaps" and does "not want to govern the West Bank," according to a cable from the US embassy in Tel Aviv, released by Wikileaks this week. In a meeting with Senator Benjamin D. Cardin (D-Maryland) in February 2009, before President Shimon Peres asked Netanyahu to form a coalition, the Likud Party leader outlined his plans for "economic peace" with the Palestinians, which would give them "a viable alternative to radicalism." Netanyahu "suggested a rapid move to develop the West Bank economically" and "promised to 'take charge personally'" of bureaucratic reform in the Palestinian Authority. ...

A suicide bomber blew himself up near a Pakistani police station in the northwest of the country on Tuesday, killing six people, including two children, officials said. The attack occurred in the town of Bannu, which lies close to Pakistan's lawless tribal belt on the Afghan border, an area which Washington has branded Al-Qaeda's global headquarters and the most dangerous region on Earth. ...

It may be shocking to many, but the birthplace of Obama is not the primary issue when considering natural born status. The Constitution requires in part that, "No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President." A combination of citizenship and something more is required. The something more begins with parents who were United States citizens at the time of the candidate's birth. That's really a matter of common sense. Citizenship status of one's parents, it appears, is the primary consideration for natural born citizen status. ...

The justices without comment Monday rejected a challenge from Charles Kerchner Jr., a Pennsylvania man who sought a trial in federal court forcing the president to produce documents regarding his birth and citizenship. The linked story incorrectly states that "Obama and his staff produced copies of his birth certificate when he was running for president in 2008." What he produced was not a birth certificate, but a "Certification of Live Birth," a document frequently issued to non-citizens, as described in several articles in the Certifi-Gate pages of MarchReport.com ...

U.S. Supreme Court Confers On Obama Eligibility

The Supreme Court conferred today on whether arguments should be heard on the merits of Kerchner v. Obama, a case challenging whether President Barack Obama is qualified to serve as president because he may not be a "natural-born citizen" as required by Article II, Section 1, Clause 5 of the U.S. Constitution. "This case is unprecedented," said Mario Apuzzo, the attorney bringing the suit. "I believe we presented an ironclad case. We've shown standing, and we've shown the importance of the issue for the Supreme Court. There's nothing standing in their way to grant us a writ of certiorari." If the Supreme Court decides to grant the "writ of certiorari," it may direct a federal trial court in New Jersey to hear the merits of the case, or it may choose to hear the merits itself. ...

A Texas state representative on Tuesday filed a bill that would require any candidate for president or vice president of the United States to show his or her birth certificate to the Texas secretary of state, another indication of just how ambitious the conservative agenda for next year's session of the Texas Legislature is expected to be. "This bill is necessary because we have a president whom the American people don't know whether he was born in Kenya or some other place," Rep. Leo Berman, R-Tyler, said in reference to President Barack Obama and of House Bill 295. Congressional Report Concedes That Obama Eligibility Was Unvetted

The analysis by the Congressional Research Service, a research arm of the U.S. Congress, openly admits no one in the federal government, including Congress, ever asked to see Obama's long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate. It explains no one was required to do so. The CRS memorandum, published and distributed to congressional offices April 3, 2009, was written to explain to senators and member of the House how they could answer constituents who were demanding to see Obama's birth certificate. Authored by Jack Maskell, the legislative attorney in the American Law Division of the Congressional Research Service, the document was a memorandum written for the subject "Qualifications for the Office of President of the United States and Legal Challenges to the Eligibility of a Candidate." Maskell explained that he wrote it only for distribution to congressional offices, not for public distribution, and it was not posted on any of the CRS report sites where the public might have been able to find it. ...

Eligibility Attorney Asks To Join Case Before Supreme Court

A prominent lawyer who has argued several legal challenges to Barack Obama's eligibility to be president, including cases pending at the appeals level in both state and federal courts in California, is asking to join in a case already pending before the U.S. Supreme Court. The request is from Gary Kreep of the United States Justice Foundation to join the appeal by attorney Mario Apuzzo on behalf of his client, Charles Kerchner Jr. Kreep is seeking to file a friend-of-the-court brief on behalf of the Western Center for Journalism in support of Kerchner and the other plaintiffs. The Western Center covers a wide variety of topics and is training "citizen journalists" and bloggers, the request explains. So, the "issue of a candidate for president of the United States not being required to conclusively prove his or her birth status is of great concern ... because if the determinations of eligibility are left to the political parties, this will lead to candidates who clearly fail to meet the requirements." ...

"The burden of proof rests solely on Barack Obama to demonstrate to the American people and to the U.S. armed forces that he commands, that he is lawfully serving in his current capacity as head of the executive branch of the federal government," the foundation said. Army prosecutors, along with the acting judge in the case, Denise Lind, have "made this determination of the commander in chief's eligibility under the Constitution impossible -- by denying discovery -- and essentially denying LTC Lakin the customary due process rights that defendants in American courts enjoy when facing criminal charges," the foundation elaborated. Earlier, the acting judge in the case, Denise Lind, ruled that nothing regarding Obama could be discussed during the trial. She noted at that time providing documentation on the president might prove "embarrassing" for him. ...

An Army judge has made it "impossible" for a career medical officer to get a fair hearing on charges he refused to deploy to Afghanistan because of concern that obeying orders in the chain of command under an ineligible commander in chief would be illegal, his attorney says. The rulings came today from Col. Denise Lind, who in so many words told Lt. Col. Terrence Lakin to pound sand. Rocks actually. He faces up to four years at hard labor if convicted in his case. "We got absolutely slammed today," said Paul R. Jensen, lead counsel for the defense. "It's impossible for us to have a fair trial under these rulings." In her decision, Lind, acting as judge in the case, censored the last remaining arguments Lakin planned to make in his defense: motive and duty. Lakin had intended to explain his motive for disobeying the order and contend that it was his duty as a good soldier to disobey orders that he believes to be illegal. The defense also planned to call as witnesses Ambassador Alan Keyes and retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Thomas McInerney. Keyes was to explain the constitutional issues involved in the case, and McInerney was to talk about the training soldiers receive regarding when they should question and even disobey orders. ...

A reader who wishes to remain anonymous sent in this criticism:

Mr. March, You linked the video of Hillary Clinton having what has been referred to as an 'outburst' on your site, yet, you did not explain the context. You omitted the truth and presented the situation as another crazy Clinton moment. You not only misportrayed the situation, you lost an opportunity to share/address the plight of women who have no rights in their country. I have been a long time reader of your March Report and have shared the Report with many people. I wrote to you addressing the Clinton video and have seen no retraction or explanation. I won't be referring anyone to this page anymore. My belief and trust that you maintain objectivity and research all sides has been permanently altered recently. Consevative or not, you have always seemed to work at being fair and true to journalism. I now am seeing you differently.

Robert Jay March Responds:

This reader has mischaracterized the report. In fact, we went out of way to add clarity to the situation. The copy proved by WMAQ-TV, the televsion station which provide the report through one of our syndicators, said "A Congolese university student seems to presume that Bill Clinton's opinion is more important than the current Secretary of State's." In order to portray the situation accurately, we rewrote the copy to read as follows (emphasis added): "As a result of a translator's error, a Congolese university student appears to presume that Bill Clinton's opinion is more important than the current Secretary of State's. Hillary explodes, and hilarity ensues. Oh, those wacky, wacky Clintons." That was all the information that was available on August 11, 2009, when we ran the story. Witty retort aside, we went out of our way to clarify the report. Further details from the State Department and the White House did not become available until the following day.

Another reader, who wish to be referred to by the nom de plume "Needles," has an unusual take on the Certifi-Gate crisis:

The birthers need to step back and consider the consequences of their actions. If Mr. Obama were to be declared ineligible, there are several possible outcomes. They could remove him from office and install Joe Biden as President. The argument would be made that if Mr. Obama was not eligible to run for President, then the ticket is invalid as well and Joe Biden should not be Vice President. The next person in the order of succession would be Speaker of the House; Nancy Pelosi. Because no eligible candidate received a majority of electoral votes, the selection of the President could be thrown into the House. Speaker Nancy Pelosi, would then be king-maker. The choices are Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi or someone Nancy Pelosi picks. Maybe it is best to leave the birth certificate matter alone.

Robert Jay March Responds:

Mr. Obama being declared ineligible does not legally invalidate Biden's election, provided he is qualified. Even if it did, the Constitution is too important to ignore; it is all that separates us from tyranny. Regardless of the consequences, if in fact Mr. Obama is ineligible, he must be removed. That said, all we have thus far is the preponderance of evidence leading to a likely conclusion, not conclusive facts. That is why the revelation of the long-form birth certificate is so important.

Finally, a third reader who wish to be referred to by the nom de plume "unihawker," writes:

Dear Mr. March, I was watching TV the other night and they showed a clip of Obama in Kenya during his trip there during the campaign. I am not sure if it was just some Freudian slip or not, but he said as he was waiving to the people greeting him, "Thank you, it is great to be back home". My question was, If he was not born in that country why would he call it home?

Robert Jay March Responds:

Good question, for which I have no answer. If this report is correct, it is yet another contribution to the preponderance of evidence that implies Mr. Obama is ineligible. A copy of the long form birth certificate would cost Mr. Obama $12; thus far he has spent $1.3 Million to avoid producing it. As in any investigation, follow the money: in this case, what money is being spent on to conceal.
