As Bill Carter tells the story in his hugely entertaining recap, The War for Late Night: When Leno Went Early and Television Went Crazy, Leno fired his manager in 1992, shortly after taking over from Johnny Carson as host of the "Tonight Show." Leno believed that his manager had said things to poison his relationship with Carson. As it was, David Letterman, who, as the host of "Late Night," had been following Carson for eleven years and was considered the heir apparent, felt resentment about being passed over for Leno, whose reputation had been built partly on his many guest appearances on "Late Night." Leno was professional to the core, but he did not want business to ruin friendship. He never used a manager or an agent for his contract renewals again.

Bush's new memoir, Decision Points, the former president explains that the CIA approached him about the possibility of waterboarding Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the al-Qaeda operative often called "the architect of 9/11." In his memoir, Bush writes that his response was "Damn right." This seems to be a straightforward admission that Bush approved the use of waterboarding on a detainee--even though this technique is widely regarded as inhumane, and its use is thought by many to violate the United Nations Convention Against Torture, of which the United States is a signatory. (In media outside the U.S., waterboarding is almost always referred to as torture.)

Peter Hitchens Talks About His Faith And His Atheist Sibling Christopher

Almost everyone knows how his elder brother Christopher Hitchens feels, but less well known are the views of Peter Hitchens, a conservative columnist for the The Mail on Sunday in London, who was inspired to write his latest book, The Rage Against God: How Atheism Led Me to Faith, because of the "dangerous" teachings of men like his brother. It is not a faith book, at least not in the conventional sense of defending doctrine or even making a philosophical case for God. Fight Over Evolution Still Simmers 85 Years After Scopes Trial

"I was taught that if you don't interpret Genesis 1 and 2 literally, then you don't take the Bible seriously," said Evans, 29. "I held on tightly to that for a long time." Evans says creationism -- the belief that God created the Earth around 6,000 years ago in six days -- was commonplace in her town. Unable to reconcile science with her faith, Evans embraced evolution. "I learned you don't have to choose between loving and following Jesus and believing in evolution," she said. She chronicled her personal journey in a new memoir, Evolving in Monkey Town: How a Girl Who Knew All the Answers Learned to Ask the Questions.

The incoming chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee says WikiLeaks should be officially designated as a terrorist organization. Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.), the panel's next head, asked the Obama administration today to "determine whether WikiLeaks could be designated a foreign terrorist organization," putting the group in the same company as Al Qaeda and Aum Shinrikyo, the Japanese cult that released deadly sarin gas on the Tokyo subway. "WikiLeaks appears to meet the legal criteria" of a U.S.-designated terrorist organization, King wrote in a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He added: "WikiLeaks presents a clear and present danger to the national security of the United States." ...

Some of the most explosive leaks centre on Iran. The revelations that Arab leaders privately urged an air strike on Iran will inflame tensions between Tehran and Washington. The documents show King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia has repeatedly urged the US to attack Iran to destroy its nuclear programme "and cut the head off the snake." Israeli defence chiefs are reported as saying in June last year that there was an 18-month window to launch an attack. Prince Hassan of Jordan warned the leaks could lead to violence. The secret messages also raise suspicions that Iran has been given North Korean long-range missiles and rockets capable of striking Europe. ...

Obama's record on international deal making was dismal. His dash to Copenhagen, Denmark, to land the Olympics for Chicago yielded nothing. His return visit there to work out a global warming agreement came to nothing as well. Then, trying to curry favour with Moscow, he threw Czech and Polish missile defenses under the bus. In return he got ... nothing. With a track record like that, the administration's poor job negotiating the New START nuclear agreement comes as no surprise. But it gives the Senate a good reason to reject the treaty: Lawmakers should not reward Obama for negotiating a lousy deal, nor should they feed Vladimir Putin's growing conviction that America is now a pushover. ...

 New Guidelines Urge Vitamin D Boost, But Not Megadose

According to the new recommendations, which are used in creating food-nutrition labels and setting nutritional standards for school meals, most people 70 and under need no more than 600 international units of vitamin D a day to maintain good bone health. That's up from the 200 to 400 units previously recommended by the Institute of Medicine. People older than 70 need more, the institute now says -- 800 units. It also raised the upper safe limit for vitamin D consumption to 4,000 units -- from 2,000. To give the recommendations some perspective, one cup of fortified orange juice contains 100 units of vitamin D. ...

 The Climate Mafia Gather In Cancun

It is time for the U.S. government to acknowledge that a climate mafia has existed since the gathering in Kyoto, Japan, to establish the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The December 11, 1997 treaty was, upon ratification, to go into force on February 16, 2005. Its expressed purpose was to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for the purpose of avoiding "global warming," but its real purpose was to create an entirely bogus system of emissions trading to be known as "the carbon market." On July 25, 1997, the U.S. Senate, responsible for the ratification of international treaties, unanimously passed (95-0) a resolution rejecting the Kyoto Treaty on the grounds that it "would result in serious harm to the economy of the United States." As this is written, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is striving to secure authorization to regulate GHG emissions despite massive evidence that they pose no threat to the environment and despite the fact that this authority would, as in 1997, cripple and likely destroy an already ailing economy. ...

Having noticed that there hasn't actually been any global warming since 1998, he feels it ought to be called "global climate disruption" instead. In case you hadn't heard, yes Barack Obama did go before a $30,000-per-person Democratic National Committee fundraiser in Greenwich, Connecticut -- the hedge-fund capital of the world -- and (at the home, I kid you not, of a guy named "Rich Richman" ) complain about how silly his base was being. (Laughter.) "If we get an historic health-care bill passed -- oh, well, the public option wasn't there. If you get the financial-reform bill passed -- then, well, I don't know about this particular derivatives rule, I'm not sure that I'm satisfied with that. And gosh, we haven't yet brought about world peace and -- (laughter.) I thought that was going to happen quicker." (Laughter.) With your own party heading for disaster in the polls, a number of its candidates are running away from you faster than you can say, "You really considered this guy for vice president?" ...

Washington has not witnessed so much top level White House intrigue since October 20, 1973, when a Saturday night saw President Nixon fire the Watergate independent counsel, the U.S. attorney general, and the deputy attorney general in the "Saturday Night Massacre." Just ten days earlier, Vice President Spiro Agnew resigned after being charged with accepting bribes while governor of Maryland. In the case of Barack Obama, the senior firings are not happening during a single nght but the recent involuntary sudden departures of the White House chief of staff and national security adviser, along with what is a putative president who is suffering from Nixonian levels of paranoia, depression, and schizophrenia, has some top-level administration officials considering the first-ever invocation of Section 4 of the 25th Amendment -- the involuntary removal of the president from office. The White House meltdown has the Washington political circuit buzzing under the surface. ...

The Obama administration seems determined to attain a stranglehold grip on the world wide web by whatever means possible. The true motivation behind doing so was revealed when Senator Joe Lieberman, a key supporter of cybersecurity legislation that would hand Obama the power to shut down portions of the Internet for months with no congressional oversight, told CNN's Candy Crowley that the ultimate intention was was to mimic the Communist Chinese system of Internet policing.

The Arizona law reflects the same language as the wording in federal immigration law. The state law doesn't create its own immigration policy. That makes the administration's legal challenge all the more specious. Its arguments parrot those the ACLU, the National Council of La Raza and similar activist groups make whenever a state or locality tries to enact a remedy to immigration-related problems that arise in their community. The Supreme Court and several appellate courts have treaded lightly in cases involving federal pre-emption. The courts have taken a cautionary stance when pre-emption is claimed, because of the slippery slope that easy findings of pre-emption would create. ...

Obama is a big spender and an advocate for bigger, more activist government. So was Bush, though not, perhaps, to the same degree. The same people who were mad at the latter were mad at the former, and have enlisted in the Tea Parties. It is only in the mind of a dedicated statist that the desire for smaller, more limited government can seem extreme, radical, or unhealthy. The Tea Party movement is not outrageous or outlandish or even, as someone suggested here on Thomas Jefferson Street just the other day, unthinking. The sense of panic felt on the left has become voluble, making the latest volley of assaults on the Tea Party an effort at explaining that the Tea Party movement is of its very nature irrational, a product of anger, and ultimately not in the country's best interest. ...

Regarding this country's immigration, the only thing wrong with the system in place is the irremediable damage of decades of unwillingness to adequately fund it, the blatant refusal to enforce it, and the preposterous assumption of its harmlessness by the Left. Every president and Congress since Lyndon Johnson shares culpability for the current conglomeration of the 15-20 million illegal immigrants in this country. The Left needs the expedited conversion from illegal to citizen for votes, and the Right needs them regardless of their citizenship status for cheap labor. ...
