In George W. Bush's new memoir, Decision Points, the former president explains that the CIA approached him about the possibility of waterboarding Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the al-Qaeda operative often called "the architect of 9/11." In his memoir, Bush writes that his response was "Damn right." This seems to be a straightforward admission that Bush approved the use of waterboarding on a detainee--even though this technique is widely regarded as inhumane, and its use is thought by many to violate the United Nations Convention Against Torture, of which the United States is a signatory. (In media outside the U.S., waterboarding is almost always referred to as torture.)

Peter Hitchens Talks About His Faith And His Atheist Sibling Christopher

Almost everyone knows how his elder brother Christopher Hitchens feels, but less well known are the views of Peter Hitchens, a conservative columnist for the The Mail on Sunday in London, who was inspired to write his latest book, The Rage Against God: How Atheism Led Me to Faith, because of the "dangerous" teachings of men like his brother. It is not a faith book, at least not in the conventional sense of defending doctrine or even making a philosophical case for God. The book is devoid of "faith talk"; the name Jesus does not appear once in the book. "Remember, I'm an ex-Trotskyite, so I'm quite suspicious of the man of total conviction and certainty. What I did not want, coming away from Marxist utopianism, was to find another mirror image of utopianism," he said. "The argument I'm making for religion is largely a negative one: if you get rid of [God] you will be in a tremendous fix."

Fight Over Evolution Still Simmers 85 Years After Scopes Trial

Rachel Held Evans had a choice while growing up in Dayton, Tenn., site of the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial. Believe the Bible or believe evolution. "I was taught that if you don't interpret Genesis 1 and 2 literally, then you don't take the Bible seriously," said Evans, 29. "I held on tightly to that for a long time." Evans says creationism -- the belief that God created the Earth around 6,000 years ago in six days -- was commonplace in her town. Unable to reconcile science with her faith, Evans embraced evolution. "I learned you don't have to choose between loving and following Jesus and believing in evolution," she said. She chronicled her personal journey in a new memoir, Evolving in Monkey Town: How a Girl Who Knew All the Answers Learned to Ask the Questions.

 The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights has delayed approving a $173,000 report that will slam the Obama administration's handling of the 2008 Philadelphia Black Panther case. ...

The Bush DOJ filed a lawsuit against the NBPP and its two members in January 2009. The defendants did not respond. But, instead of filing for a default judgment against all three defendants, the Obama DOJ filed a notice of voluntary dismissal of the lawsuit for two of the defendants and obtained a narrow injunction against the third. Since then, Mr. Gaziano's United States Commission on Civil Rights (USCCR), Congressman Frank Wolf, R-Va., and Congressman Lamar Smith, R-Tex., have been investigating the reasons for doing so. All three have complained about DOJ stonewalling. Two DOJ attorneys have testified that the case was dropped for political reasons and because the complainants in the case were white and the defendants were black. One is the former Voting Section Chief, Christopher Coates. He testified at a USCCR hearing on September 24 that the NAACP Legal Defense Fund influenced the dismissal of the case. Mr. Gaziano said during his talk that the Coates' allegations, the lack of cooperation by DOJ and some inconsistencies by DOJ officials, indicate that there is "a presence of a guilty mind with something to hide." ...

 On his first visit to India, Barack Obama is aiming to cement military and economic co-operation between the two countries. Billions of dollars of trade are at stake, but India has significant demands of it's own. ...

The four-nation Asian tour is a "signal" to China of the importance the US places on democracies, George Perkovich, vice president for studies and director of the Nuclear Policy Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace said. "In a sense, it's to show the flag and to reciprocate for (Indian) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit to Washington when he was the first foreign visitor on a state visit during the Obama administration." Perkovich stressed it was "significant that India is the first stop on the trip, but it's also noteworthy that he is visiting key Asian democracies. It's India, it's Japan, it's Indonesia - there's a subtle signaling that values matter in foreign policy and that democracies are especially important to the United States." "And all of this is a signal to China, but also to the American body politics and India and Japan, that there's a special connection among democracies." ...

 AND TEXT. When NBC's Matt Lauer threw out the tired, overused, standard media line, on Friday's Today show, that the public is tired of all the "vitriol" and wants the Republicans to just work with Barack Obama and the Democrats, his guest, Karl Rove, threw Obama's words back in Lauer's face as he pointed out it was the President who called Republicans "enemies." When Lauer asked if the GOP could advance their agenda "without personally attacking Obama" Rove responded that Republicans could work with the President but it was he, who needed to tamp down the rhetoric, as the former George W. Bush senior adviser reminded Lauer: "It was the President out there saying to a Latino radio station, 'We need to punish our enemies and reward our friends.'" ...

 AND TEXT. Dubbya thinks Obama has failed as a President -- a judgment supported by this week's robust Republican gains. Several Bush friends, associates and longtime political allies said President 43 is worried about Obama's Afghanistan policy. He supports the troop surge and more muscular drone strikes against terrorist targets, but also believes Obama has made a mess of relations with Pakistan. "He thinks the policy is adrift," one insider reported.

 Barack Obama admitted Wednesday he suffered a "shellacking" in midterm elections, but would not concede that the Republican resurgence in Congress represented a repudiation of his domestic program. ...

"We'd be misreading the election if we thought that the American people want to see us for the next two years re-litigate arguments that we had over the last two years," Obama said at a White House news conference, demonstrating the extent to which he has misread the election. "We're determined to stop the agenda Americans have rejected," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., declared at the Capitol. "We'll work with the administration when they agree with the people, and confront them when they don't." And if Democrats don't get the message voters sent, he predicted, the electorate will deliver more punishment in 2012. ...

House Speaker-in-waiting, Rep. John Boehner of Ohio, vowed Republicans would do everything they could to wipe the health care legislation off the books. Separately, the Federal Reserve announced new steps designed to further lower interest rates on loans and lead to more job creation, using powers denied mere politicians. Taken together, the fast-paced series of events confirmed the primacy of the economy as an issue in a country with 9.6 percent unemployment, record home foreclosures and disappointingly slow growth. ...

Just two months ago, the incumbent Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski conceded her party's primary to little-known Tea Party-backed Joe Miller. Shortly after, Murkowski dove into the middle of Republican infighting by launching a write-in bid to retain her seat. "They said it couldn't be done," Murkowski said as the results came in late Tuesday. "We looked at that, and we said if it can be done anywhere, it can be done in Alaska, and let's prove the rest of the country wrong." Murkowski was one of 161 people who filed the paperwork necessary to qualify as a write-in candidate, according to the Alaska Division of Elections. Another fellow Alaskan running as a write-in is Lisa M. Lackey, whose presence on the ballot may complicate things for Murkowski. Under state law, for a write-in vote to be valid, the name written on the ballot must match the name as it is listed on the write-in candidate's declaration of candidacy. In Murkowski's case, the law requires her supporters to write "Lisa Murkowski" or "Murkowski" for the vote to be counted. However, in the event a voter misspells or abbreviates a candidate's name, such as "Lisa M." instead of "Lisa Murkowski," the Division of Elections would determine the voter's intent "on a case-by-case basis," according to division director Gail Fenumiai. ...

 Federal prosecutors are announcing charges against a Philadelphia police inspector, Carlos Daniel Castro, saying he has been involved in an extortion and bribery scheme. According to the indictment, Castro invested $90,000 in real estate and when it failed to yield any financial result, he allegedly sought help from a witness cooperating with the FBI to get money back. The document says Castro wanted $150,000 back, instructed the "collector" to use threats of violence and violence, and he was willing to pay a 10 percent fee. According to a U.S. Attorney's Office news release, "Castro specifically instructed the (cooperating witness) to deal directly with the collector as Castro's representative, and not to disclose his position within the Philadelphia Police Department, telling the CW 'I can't get myself in trouble. I want to be Police Commissioner.'" ...

 U.S. authorities have discovered 20 tons of pot near a tunnel connecting warehouses on either side of California's border with Mexico. The tunnel ran 600 yards under the border near San Diego.  A young Asian man who boarded an Air Canada flight in Hong Kong elaborately disguised as an elderly white male by means of a Mission Impossible style latex mask is seeking refugee status in Canada, in what border officials are calling an 'unbelievable case of concealment.' ...

Paul Bourgeois, a 50-year-old businessman from Moncton, said Saturday he found the entire situation "mind-boggling." "There are so many people, so many passport checks at a number of locations," he said as he waited at the Hong Kong airport. "For anyone to have gotten through wearing a mask is mind-boggling." ...

 A twin-engine turboprop operated by Cuba's state-run airline crashes in a remote area on the island, killing 61 passengers and a crew of seven. It is the nation's worst air disaster in more than 20 years. ...

he black box and cockpit voice recorder of a plane that crashed in Cuba, killing all 68 people on board, have been recovered, a media report said. Aero Caribbean Flight 883, en route to Havana from the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba, crashed late Thursday in the central province of Sancti Spiritus shortly after the crew reported an emergency and contact was lost. Provincial chief prosecutor Rolando Diaz said authorities hope the contents of the recorders will shed light on the cause of the crash, the official AIN news agency reported Friday. Cuban television and the government website Cubadebate released a list of the victims including 28 foreigners from 10 different countries who were aboard the plane. ...

The forces killed Ezequiel Cardenas Guillen, also known as Tony Storm, in an hours-long gunbattle Friday in the border city of Matamoros, across from the U.S. city of Brownsville, Texas. Mexican officials say three gunmen and two members of the security forces were also killed during the firefight. A Matamoros newspaper, El Expreso, says one of its reporters also died in the shootout. ...

Investigators found the bombs wired to mobile phones. The communication cards had been removed and the phones could not receive calls, making it likely the terrorists intended the alarm or timer functions to detonate the bombs, U.S. officials have said. They also revealed that each bomb was attached to a syringe containing lead azide, a chemical initiator that would have detonated PETN explosives packed into each printer cartridge. Both PETN and a syringe were used in the failed bombing last Christmas of a Detroit-bound airliner. ...

Passengers today described their terror as an engine of their superjumbo burst into flames just minutes after take-off. Witnesses reported a blast that sent debris from the Qantas plane -- flying from London to Sydney via Singapore - hurtling to the ground over western Indonesia. The pilot was forced to make an emergency as the 459 passengers, many of whom are British, braced themselves for the worst. 'It sounded like a bomb,' said one witness. Another witness spoke of hearing a screeching sound before the explosion. 'I thought I heard an explosion and when I looked up I saw a plane going round and round and there was smoke coming out of its tail,' he said. ...

A reader who wishes to remain anonymous sent in this criticism:

Mr. March, You linked the video of Hillary Clinton having what has been referred to as an 'outburst' on your site, yet, you did not explain the context. You omitted the truth and presented the situation as another crazy Clinton moment. You not only misportrayed the situation, you lost an opportunity to share/address the plight of women who have no rights in their country. I have been a long time reader of your March Report and have shared the Report with many people. I wrote to you addressing the Clinton video and have seen no retraction or explanation. I won't be referring anyone to this page anymore. My belief and trust that you maintain objectivity and research all sides has been permanently altered recently. Consevative or not, you have always seemed to work at being fair and true to journalism. I now am seeing you differently.

Robert Jay March Responds:

This reader has mischaracterized the report. In fact, we went out of way to add clarity to the situation. The copy proved by WMAQ-TV, the televsion station which provide the report through one of our syndicators, said "A Congolese university student seems to presume that Bill Clinton's opinion is more important than the current Secretary of State's." In order to portray the situation accurately, we rewrote the copy to read as follows (emphasis added): "As a result of a translator's error, a Congolese university student appears to presume that Bill Clinton's opinion is more important than the current Secretary of State's. Hillary explodes, and hilarity ensues. Oh, those wacky, wacky Clintons." That was all the information that was available on August 11, 2009, when we ran the story. Witty retort aside, we went out of our way to clarify the report. Further details from the State Department and the White House did not become available until the following day.

Another reader, who wish to be referred to by the nom de plume "Needles," has an unusual take on the Certifi-Gate crisis:

The birthers need to step back and consider the consequences of their actions. If Mr. Obama were to be declared ineligible, there are several possible outcomes. They could remove him from office and install Joe Biden as President. The argument would be made that if Mr. Obama was not eligible to run for President, then the ticket is invalid as well and Joe Biden should not be Vice President. The next person in the order of succession would be Speaker of the House; Nancy Pelosi. Because no eligible candidate received a majority of electoral votes, the selection of the President could be thrown into the House. Speaker Nancy Pelosi, would then be king-maker. The choices are Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi or someone Nancy Pelosi picks. Maybe it is best to leave the birth certificate matter alone.

Robert Jay March Responds:

Mr. Obama being declared ineligible does not legally invalidate Biden's election, provided he is qualified. Even if it did, the Constitution is too important to ignore; it is all that separates us from tyranny. Regardless of the consequences, if in fact Mr. Obama is ineligible, he must be removed. That said, all we have thus far is the preponderance of evidence leading to a likely conclusion, not conclusive facts. That is why the revelation of the long-form birth certificate is so important.

Finally, a third reader who wish to be referred to by the nom de plume "unihawker," writes:

Dear Mr. March, I was watching TV the other night and they showed a clip of Obama in Kenya during his trip there during the campaign. I am not sure if it was just some Freudian slip or not, but he said as he was waiving to the people greeting him, "Thank you, it is great to be back home". My question was, If he was not born in that country why would he call it home?

Robert Jay March Responds:

Good question, for which I have no answer. If this report is correct, it is yet another contribution to the preponderance of evidence that implies Mr. Obama is ineligible. A copy of the long form birth certificate would cost Mr. Obama $12; thus far he has spent $1.3 Million to avoid producing it. As in any investigation, follow the money: in this case, what money is being spent on to conceal.
