Peter Hitchens Talks About His Faith And His Atheist Sibling Christopher

Almost everyone knows how his elder brother Christopher Hitchens feels, but less well known are the views of Peter Hitchens, a conservative columnist for the The Mail on Sunday in London, who was inspired to write his latest book, The Rage Against God: How Atheism Led Me to Faith, because of the "dangerous" teachings of men like his brother. It is not a faith book, at least not in the conventional sense of defending doctrine or even making a philosophical case for God. The book is devoid of "faith talk"; the name Jesus does not appear once in the book. "Remember, I'm an ex-Trotskyite, so I'm quite suspicious of the man of total conviction and certainty. What I did not want, coming away from Marxist utopianism, was to find another mirror image of utopianism," he said. "The argument I'm making for religion is largely a negative one: if you get rid of [God] you will be in a tremendous fix."

Fight Over Evolution Still Simmers 85 Years After Scopes Trial

Rachel Held Evans had a choice while growing up in Dayton, Tenn., site of the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial. Believe the Bible or believe evolution. "I was taught that if you don't interpret Genesis 1 and 2 literally, then you don't take the Bible seriously," said Evans, 29. "I held on tightly to that for a long time." Evans says creationism -- the belief that God created the Earth around 6,000 years ago in six days -- was commonplace in her town. Unable to reconcile science with her faith, Evans embraced evolution. "I learned you don't have to choose between loving and following Jesus and believing in evolution," she said. She chronicled her personal journey in a new memoir, Evolving in Monkey Town: How a Girl Who Knew All the Answers Learned to Ask the Questions.

 Barack Obama admitted Wednesday he suffered a "shellacking" in midterm elections, but would not concede that the Republican resurgence in Congress represented a repudiation of his domestic program. ...

"We'd be misreading the election if we thought that the American people want to see us for the next two years re-litigate arguments that we had over the last two years," Obama said at a White House news conference, demonstrating the extent to which he has misread the election. "We're determined to stop the agenda Americans have rejected," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., declared at the Capitol. "We'll work with the administration when they agree with the people, and confront them when they don't." And if Democrats don't get the message voters sent, he predicted, the electorate will deliver more punishment in 2012. ...

House Speaker-in-waiting, Rep. John Boehner of Ohio, vowed Republicans would do everything they could to wipe the health care legislation off the books. Separately, the Federal Reserve announced new steps designed to further lower interest rates on loans and lead to more job creation, using powers denied mere politicians. Taken together, the fast-paced series of events confirmed the primacy of the economy as an issue in a country with 9.6 percent unemployment, record home foreclosures and disappointingly slow growth. ...

Just two months ago, the incumbent Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski conceded her party's primary to little-known Tea Party-backed Joe Miller. Shortly after, Murkowski dove into the middle of Republican infighting by launching a write-in bid to retain her seat. "They said it couldn't be done," Murkowski said as the results came in late Tuesday. "We looked at that, and we said if it can be done anywhere, it can be done in Alaska, and let's prove the rest of the country wrong." Murkowski was one of 161 people who filed the paperwork necessary to qualify as a write-in candidate, according to the Alaska Division of Elections. Another fellow Alaskan running as a write-in is Lisa M. Lackey, whose presence on the ballot may complicate things for Murkowski. Under state law, for a write-in vote to be valid, the name written on the ballot must match the name as it is listed on the write-in candidate's declaration of candidacy. In Murkowski's case, the law requires her supporters to write "Lisa Murkowski" or "Murkowski" for the vote to be counted. However, in the event a voter misspells or abbreviates a candidate's name, such as "Lisa M." instead of "Lisa Murkowski," the Division of Elections would determine the voter's intent "on a case-by-case basis," according to division director Gail Fenumiai. ...

 House Minority Leader John Boehner is expected to become the next Speaker of the House following Tuesday's Republican takeover of the U.S. House. While he's spent years as a part of the GOP leadership, many Americans don't know much about him. Watch this video to learn about his background. ...

 Republicans have seized control of the U.S. House of Representatives by a wide margin. "The American people have sent an unmistakable message to him tonight, and that message is: "change course," current Minority Leader and the presumptive next Speaker of the House John Boehner said after the results came in. Barack Obama called Boehner to congratulate him on the victory, and promised cooperation. Democrats were able to hold the Senate, but did give up seats to Tea-Party backed candidates. Republican Rand Paul won a Kentucky Senate seat as a no-compromise Tea Partier. He vowed to go to Washington to battle both party establishments. "Eleven percent of the people approve of what's going on in Congress but tonight there's a Tea Party tidal wave and we're sending a message to 'em!" Paul said to a roaring crowd. Tea Partier Marco Rubio took a Florida Senate seat. Democratic Senate incumbent Blanche Lincoln lost her seat in Arkansas. Republican Dan Coats won in Indiana, replacing a Democrat. Still, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid held his seat, beating Tea Party favorite Sharron Angle. Joe Manchin kept a West Virginia Senate seat Democratic, as did Chris Coons in Delaware, beating Tea Partier Christine O'Donnell. ...

 In Illinois, the GOP wave crashed into the Senate seat held by Barack Obama. The close race goes to former Congressman Mark Kirk, a Republican. ...

Voters hit the reset button on American politics Tuesday. There is no more Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, no more one-party control of the Federal Government, no more Obama landslide map. The country awakens this morning to all the same problems -- but the menu of solutions is up for grabs. "Yes, we can" has collided with "Oh, no you don't." And the future -- including the 2012 presidential election -- starts right now. The swing voters who flocked to Barack Obama two years ago turned against his agenda, electing a tidal wave of new Republican members of Congress, and shaving the Democratic advantage in the Senate to a hair's breadth. As the number of House seats captured by the GOP climbed toward 60, Democrats pondered a loss of historic scope, exceeding the 52 seats captured by the GOP in the 1994 Gingrich revolution. Exit polls suggested that widespread anger over the government's handling of the poor economy was the fuel that fed the firestorm -- it was a wave of discontent, a resounding vote of no confidence in all branches of power. ...

It wasn't just the economy, stupid. The historic losses suffered Tuesday by Democrats in the U.S. midterm elections owe as much to the unpopular and off-point agenda of Barack Obama as it does to high unemployment. A policy pivot might have limited the damage, but the White House failed to recognize the trouble until too late. The economy made a Republican win almost inevitable, but Obamanomics made it a wipeout. ...

The idea of putting largely untested outsider candidates up against even embattled incumbents like Senate majority leader Harry Reid backfired on the tea party Tuesday, potentially costing the Republicans control of the Senate. With tea party champions Christine O'Donnell in Delaware and Sharron Angle in Nevada both losing their races and Ken Buck in a race still too close to call in Colorado, the Senate remained out of Republican control even as the Democrats faced historic economic headwinds and an angry and dissatisfied public. To be sure, Republican gains in the Senate -- even if short of a takeover -- were impressive. Republicans look assured of picking up at least six seats -- to 47 -- and perhaps seven if Mr. Buck can win his race.The Republican takeover of the House is by itself critical to shift the balance of power in Washington. In the Senate, newly elected tea party candidates like Ron Paul and Marco Rubio can have an outsized effect, promising to severely hamper Barack Obama's ability to push through major legislation. "The ability of this administration to get major new programs done was already limited. This [election] just seals the deal," Jaret Seiberg, a policy analyst with the Washington Research Group investment advisory firm said. ...

Whether Pelosi will stay on as minority leader -- or even in Congress -- remains to be seen. "I certainly hope she does, because I think she could still be very effective," said Art Torres, a former state Democratic Party chairman. But if Pelosi leaves, triggering a special election to fill her seat, it will be a very different climate for San Francisco in Congress. "We would go from having the most powerful person in the House to the one with the least seniority," said University of San Francisco political science Professor Corey Cook. ...

 California voters (at least, those who did not have the munchies) firmly rejected a measure to legalize recreational use of marijuana, and defeated an attempt to shoot down the state's landmark global warming law. ...

Current House Minority Whip Eric Cantor, R-Va., is expected to be the new majority leader in the House with Ohio Rep. John Boehner as speaker. "I believe that when we take majority of in January, I hope that we're able to put a repeal bill on the floor right away because that's what the American people want. They understand that this bill is going to bankrupt this country and take away the health care that they -- most people in this country -- know and like," Cantor said. ...

 Rand Paul says his victory in Kentuckys U.S. Senate race sends a clear message to Congressthat the people have come to take their government back. ...

Despite her devastating defeat to Harry Reid, political experts said Tuesday night that Nevada has probably not seen the last of Sharron Angle. Angle emerged in the U.S. Senate race after defeating GOP favorite Sue Lowden in the primary for the nomination. But for those who didn't know her before, the former assemblywoman from Reno has been a constant candidate for about the last 15 years in Nevada. In 2012, she could have a buffet of campaign choices. ...

Republicans ousted at least five House Democrats across New York as the antiestablishment, anti-incumbent wave sweeping midterm elections reached into one of the nation's most reliably blue states. Democrats lost House seats from New York City to Rochester despite strong wins for the party at the top of the ticket. Andrew Cuomo's win over Republican Carl Paladino in the governor's race and twin victories for Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand over underfunded and largely unknown Republican opponents weren't enough to stem deep losses down the ballot. ...

Recounts loom in at least two states, which could last weeks, and both parties are lawyered up for the legal battles that might ensue. These three nail-biters won't determine which party controls the Senate. With outcomes elsewhere already known, Democrats will remain the majority party there, although by a slimmer margin. But just how slim remains to be seen, and on a night when Democrats took the worst midterm shellacking in the House of Representatives since 1948, they're hoping for just a bit of good news. ...

 U.S. authorities have discovered 20 tons of pot near a tunnel connecting warehouses on either side of California's border with Mexico. The tunnel ran 600 yards under the border near San Diego.  A 9-month-old baby girl remains in critical condition at an Atlanta hospital after she was attacked by two raccoons. Authorities say the child was attacked as she was sleeping in a crib in the same room as her mother. ...

Investigators found the bombs wired to mobile phones. The communication cards had been removed and the phones could not receive calls, making it likely the terrorists intended the alarm or timer functions to detonate the bombs, U.S. officials have said. They also revealed that each bomb was attached to a syringe containing lead azide, a chemical initiator that would have detonated PETN explosives packed into each printer cartridge. Both PETN and a syringe were used in the failed bombing last Christmas of a Detroit-bound airliner. ...

Passengers today described their terror as an engine of their superjumbo burst into flames just minutes after take-off. Witnesses reported a blast that sent debris from the Qantas plane -- flying from London to Sydney via Singapore - hurtling to the ground over western Indonesia. The pilot was forced to make an emergency as the 459 passengers, many of whom are British, braced themselves for the worst. 'It sounded like a bomb,' said one witness. Another witness spoke of hearing a screeching sound before the explosion. 'I thought I heard an explosion and when I looked up I saw a plane going round and round and there was smoke coming out of its tail,' he said. ...

 Indonesia's Mount Merapi sent a burst of searing gas high into the air Thursday, hours after its most explosive eruption in a deadly week. The disaster has triggered an exodus from villages and emergency shelters along its slopes. Raw Video. ...

China's interest in the elections was high, with extensive coverage topping most leading Internet news portals. Xiong Zhiyong, a professor at China Foreign Affairs University who specializes in China-US relations, said he worried about the election's fallout on the U.S.-China relationship, which has been marked by tensions over trade and currency, among other issues. With the U.S. economy still in decline, China has become an easy target for American politicians, he said. "Inside the U.S., the Republicans have been attacking Obama's recovery policies. And the Obama administration has been unable to come up with an effective solution to save the economy. All that being considered, it is easier to accuse China of making that mess," he said. During election campaigning, China-bashing was quite popular among U.S. candidates, he said. ...

At least 11 letter bombs had been detected in the Greek capital, one addressed to Nicolas Sarkozy and eight to the embassies of Bulgaria, Russia, Germany, Switzerland, Mexico, Chile, the Netherlands and Belgium. Greek police said international postal and parcel services would be suspended for two days. In Berlin, German authorities destroyed a bomb addressed to Chancellor Angela Merkel. The package was sent from Greece two days earlier by UPS delivery and resembled the Athens parcel bombs, according to German interior minister Thomas de Maiziere. "The threat is very serious. We are extremely vigilant and I am following it very closely," Sarkozy told reporters. ...

Indonesia's Mount Merapi volcano has erupted again, with greater force than last week's eruptions in which 36 people died. Witnesses said lava and burning rocks as well as hot ash were shooting from its crater for several hours. An estimated 75,000 people have been evacuated from the area since Mount Merapi first erupted last Tuesday. ...

The attack -- blasts in at least 13 separate neighborhoods -- was clearly designed to hit civilians at restaurants and cafes where many Iraqis were gathered to enjoy the warm evening. The sophistication and the targets -- Shia -- suggested that Al Qaeda-linked Sunni militants were responsible for the deadliest day in Iraq since May. The attack comes just days after a bloody seige at a Baghdad church which left 58 dead. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki claimed former members of Saddam Hussein's Baath Party were behind the attacks. ...

A reader who wishes to remain anonymous sent in this criticism:

Mr. March, You linked the video of Hillary Clinton having what has been referred to as an 'outburst' on your site, yet, you did not explain the context. You omitted the truth and presented the situation as another crazy Clinton moment. You not only misportrayed the situation, you lost an opportunity to share/address the plight of women who have no rights in their country. I have been a long time reader of your March Report and have shared the Report with many people. I wrote to you addressing the Clinton video and have seen no retraction or explanation. I won't be referring anyone to this page anymore. My belief and trust that you maintain objectivity and research all sides has been permanently altered recently. Consevative or not, you have always seemed to work at being fair and true to journalism. I now am seeing you differently.

Robert Jay March Responds:

This reader has mischaracterized the report. In fact, we went out of way to add clarity to the situation. The copy proved by WMAQ-TV, the televsion station which provide the report through one of our syndicators, said "A Congolese university student seems to presume that Bill Clinton's opinion is more important than the current Secretary of State's." In order to portray the situation accurately, we rewrote the copy to read as follows (emphasis added): "As a result of a translator's error, a Congolese university student appears to presume that Bill Clinton's opinion is more important than the current Secretary of State's. Hillary explodes, and hilarity ensues. Oh, those wacky, wacky Clintons." That was all the information that was available on August 11, 2009, when we ran the story. Witty retort aside, we went out of our way to clarify the report. Further details from the State Department and the White House did not become available until the following day.

Another reader, who wish to be referred to by the nom de plume "Needles," has an unusual take on the Certifi-Gate crisis:

The birthers need to step back and consider the consequences of their actions. If Mr. Obama were to be declared ineligible, there are several possible outcomes. They could remove him from office and install Joe Biden as President. The argument would be made that if Mr. Obama was not eligible to run for President, then the ticket is invalid as well and Joe Biden should not be Vice President. The next person in the order of succession would be Speaker of the House; Nancy Pelosi. Because no eligible candidate received a majority of electoral votes, the selection of the President could be thrown into the House. Speaker Nancy Pelosi, would then be king-maker. The choices are Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi or someone Nancy Pelosi picks. Maybe it is best to leave the birth certificate matter alone.

Robert Jay March Responds:

Mr. Obama being declared ineligible does not legally invalidate Biden's election, provided he is qualified. Even if it did, the Constitution is too important to ignore; it is all that separates us from tyranny. Regardless of the consequences, if in fact Mr. Obama is ineligible, he must be removed. That said, all we have thus far is the preponderance of evidence leading to a likely conclusion, not conclusive facts. That is why the revelation of the long-form birth certificate is so important.

Finally, a third reader who wish to be referred to by the nom de plume "unihawker," writes:

Dear Mr. March, I was watching TV the other night and they showed a clip of Obama in Kenya during his trip there during the campaign. I am not sure if it was just some Freudian slip or not, but he said as he was waiving to the people greeting him, "Thank you, it is great to be back home". My question was, If he was not born in that country why would he call it home?

Robert Jay March Responds:

Good question, for which I have no answer. If this report is correct, it is yet another contribution to the preponderance of evidence that implies Mr. Obama is ineligible. A copy of the long form birth certificate would cost Mr. Obama $12; thus far he has spent $1.3 Million to avoid producing it. As in any investigation, follow the money: in this case, what money is being spent on to conceal.
