New Book Celebrates George Herriman's Krazy Kat

Doug MacCash -- Times-Picayune

Video AND TEXT. "George Herriman's Krazy Kat, A Celebration of Sundays" is a dynamite introduction to one of the most dysfunctional duos ever found on the funny pages. It's also a book-shelf must-have for anyone devoted to jazz-era expression. But beneath the quirky comedy of the antique cartoon, Herriman's real life story is a disquieting detour through the bad ol' days of American race relations that begins in the Treme neighborhood of New Orleans. Starting exactly 100 years ago (July 26, 1910), Ignatz the cartoon mouse began hurling bricks at the head of his Coconino County neighbor, Krazy Kat. Zip! Pow! It's no wonder that a mouse, given the chance, would torment a cat. Here's the weird thing: For the next 34 years, Krazy Kat fell more deeply in love with Ignatz with each beaning. Try as he might, police officer Pupp could do nothing to dampen either Ignatz's violent obsession or Krazy's misplaced ardor for the mouse that he or she (we're never quite sure of Krazy's sex) called "L'il Anjil."

YEST Fight Over Evolution Still Simmers 85 Years After Scopes Trial

Bob Smietana -- The Tennessean

Rachel Held Evans had a choice while growing up in Dayton, Tenn., site of the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial. Believe the Bible or believe evolution. "I was taught that if you don't interpret Genesis 1 and 2 literally, then you don't take the Bible seriously," said Evans, 29. "I held on tightly to that for a long time." Evans says creationism -- the belief that God created the Earth around 6,000 years ago in six days -- was commonplace in her town. Unable to reconcile science with her faith, Evans embraced evolution. "I learned you don't have to choose between loving and following Jesus and believing in evolution," she said. She chronicled her personal journey in a new memoir, Evolving in Monkey Town: How a Girl Who Knew All the Answers Learned to Ask the Questions.

The Solar Storm That Could Take Our Power Grid Out For Years

Lawrence E. Joseph -- Huffington Post

John Kappenman, author of Aftermath: A Guide to Preparing For and Surviving Apocalypse 2012, an obscure electrical engineer from Duluth, Minnesota, is determined to save civilization from the mother of all blackouts. If he succeeds, the daily life of billions around the world will continue undisrupted. But if he fails, we may well suffer on a scale that makes even World Wars seem trivial in comparison. Over the past thirty years, Kappenman has accumulated a vast and compelling body of evidence indicating that sooner or later a major blast of EMP (electromagnetic pulse) from the Sun, a space weather Katrina, will knock out the electrical power grid and bring society to its knees. "Historically large storms have a potential to cause power grid blackouts and transformer damage of unprecedented proportions. An event that could incapacitate the network for a long time could be one of the largest natural disasters we could face," he declares.

The Manchurian President: Barack Obama's Ties To Communists, Socialists And Other Anti-American Extremists

Reviewed by Wes Vernon -- Washington Times

In "The Manchurian President: Barack Obama's Ties to Communists, Socialists and Other Anti-American Extremists ," we have a compendium of the result (to date) of the left's mission - started in the 1930s, accelerated in the '60s and realized in the '70s. In the ensuing decades, those who wished our country no good forged ahead full bore, or, as one of them (a mainstream-media journalist) is quoted as saying out loud: "I'm going to bore from within." The real-life "Manchurian" story is "that of a powerful politician whose true past has been intentionally obscured, and who has become a vehicle for implementing a hidden radical agenda." All of that is to be found in these pages, precisely and painstakingly documented.

Reclaiming The Jeffersonian Tradition Of Nullification

Reviewed by Kevin Gutzman -- Campaign For Liberty

Under today's constitutional law, the "Federal" (really now national) Government can do anything it wants. The speaker of the House literally laughs at the implication that it cannot. For anyone who knows history and loves liberty, this is a worrisome situation. What to do? In "Nullification: How to Resist Federal Tyranny in the 21st Century," Thomas E. Woods, Jr.'s answer is to dust off the Jeffersonian tradition of nullification. Nullification lays out the argument for nullification's constitutionality, describes historic and contemporary instances in which the doctrine has been and is being employed, and advocates that it be used more widely today. Finally, in a very useful appendix, Woods provides some of the classic nullification documents from days gone by. The appendix serves both to arm the reader with pro-nullification arguments and to illustrate the variety of circumstances to which it has been applied.

Intelligent Design Uncensored

evolutionnews.org

Intelligent Design Uncensored: An Easy- To-understand Guide to the Controversy is a book I've long hoped that someone would write. Don't get me wrong -- there are other good books out there that explain the fundamentals of intelligent design (ID) in plain language. But with clarity, elegance, and accuracy, Intelligent Design Uncensored fills this niche better than most. The authors, Dr. William Dembski (an expert in the technical arguments for ID) and Dr. Jonathan Witt (a writer with a strong grasp of the relevant science) -- both Discovery Institute senior fellows -- make an ideal team. This is a book for any reader -- student or otherwise -- who seeks a compelling, accurate, accessible case for intelligent design.

Review: Glenn Beck's "The Overton Window"

Rob Port -- Say Anything Blog

Unlike his previous books, The Overton Window is a fictional story about the son of an influential PR magnate bent on re-making America and the world in his vision falling in love with a tea party/patriot movement leader who wants a return to the principles of the founding fathers. As a social political commentary, it hit on a lot of the hot political topics of the day: Bailouts, Excessive government grown beyond its constitutional restraints, Nanny statism.

A Mind-Changing Page

Thomas Sowell -- Townhall.com

Sometimes you can read a book that will change your mind on some fundamental issue. Rarely, however, is there just one page that can undermine or destroy a widely-held belief. But there is such a page-- page 77 of the book "Out of Work" by Richard Vedder and Lowell Gallaway. What is on that one page in "Out of Work: Unemployment and Government in Twentieth-Century America" that could change people's minds? Just a simple table, giving unemployment rates for every month during the entire decade of the 1930s. Those who think that the stock market crash in October 1929 is what caused the huge unemployment rates of the 1930s will have a hard time reconciling that belief with the data in that table.

Einstein's Brain Unlocks Some Mysteries Of The Mind

Jon Hamilton -- National Public Radio

Audio AND TEXT. In the 55 years since Albert Einstein's death, many scientists have tried to figure out what made him so smart. But no one tried harder than a pathologist named Thomas Harvey, who lost his job and his reputation in a quest to unlock the secrets of Einstein's genius. Harvey never found the answer. But through an unlikely sequence of events, his search helped transform our understanding of how the brain works. How that happened is a bizarre story that involves a dead genius, a stolen brain, a rogue scientist and a crazy idea that turned out not to be so crazy. The Struggle For Tibet

Reviewed by J. Michael Cole -- Taipei Times (TW)

After nearly half a century of Chine occupation of Tibet, riots on an unprecedented scale occurred not only in the Tibetan Administrative Region (TAR), but also in parts of China with substantial Tibetan populations. Prior to what has come to be known as the March Incident of 2008, Tibetan protests had largely been limited to areas within TAR proper. How can we explain the spontaneous -- and violent -- uprising that shocked the world months before the Beijing Olympics and invited an ironfisted crackdown by the Chinese authorities? The answer is the culminating The Struggle for Tibet, a collection of articles written by Tibetan academic Tsering Shakya and the Chinese intellectual Wang Lixiong. In what often reads like a dialogue between the two authors, the book explores the question of Tibetan identity, religion, assimilation and resistance from the perspective of Tibetans.

Peddling Peril: How The Secret Nuclear Trade Arms America's Enemies

Reviewed by Jeremy Bernstein -- New York Review of Books

A great deal has been written about Pakistani metallurgist A.Q. Khan and his collaborators, but I have never found an account as detailed as the one in "Peddling Peril: How the Secret Nuclear Trade Arms America's Enemies," by the nuclear armaments expert David Albright. Albright holds master's degrees in physics and mathematics and has taught physics. For five years-between 1992 and 1997-he was part of the International Atomic Energy Agency's Action Team and in that capacity he spent time as a weapons inspector in Iraq. In 1993, he founded the Institute for Science and International Security, a nonprofit research organization based in Washington, D.C., of which he is president. In short, Albright is a perfect person to write a book like this.

Martin Luther King Jr. James Earl Ray, the dodgy career criminal and escaped convict who murdered King and helped turn 1968 into the sad, tumultuous year that it was, is the man with the gun in Hampton Sides' Hellhound on His Trail: The Stalking of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the International Hunt for His Assassin. New Biography Reveals Oprah's 'Hidden' Life

Jeremy Olshan -- New York Post

Oprah Winfrey -- who built a billion-dollar empire persuading everyone from celebs to average Joes to reveal the truth about themselves -- is a big phony when it comes to her own past, an explosive new book charges. Winfrey's relationship with longtime "love" Stedman Graham, her reputed dirt-poor upbringing in rural Mississippi, her rumored lesbian crushes on women such as Diane Sawyer -- all are stories she has manipulated for decades in the name of sensational ratings, according to writer Kitty Kelley's latest unauthorized biography "Oprah: A Biography." "Where Oprah got that nonsense about growing up in filth and roaches I have no idea," said a relative, Katherine Carr Esters. "I've confronted her and asked, 'Why do you tell such lies?' Oprah told me, 'That's what people want to hear. The truth is boring.'

Can Science Explain Heaven?

Lisa Miller -- Newsweek

There are those who believe that science will eventually explain everything -- including our enduring belief in heaven. The thesis here is very simple: heaven is not a real place, or even a process or a supernatural event. It's something that happens in your brain as you die. The author of this article first encountered this idea when she was researching her new book, Heaven: Our Enduring Fascination with the Afterlife.

YEST "Journalists" On JournoList Reportedly Plotted To Discredit Sarah Palin

FOX News

Excerpts from the now-defunct listserv Journolist, on which hundreds of reporters and bloggers discussed everything from how to help Barack Obama's presidential campaign to whether the government should shut down Fox News, showed the members discussing a number of different campaign-style tactics to undermine Palin. They generally noted it would be unwise to target her relative inexperience given Obama's light record in public office, deciding instead that the focus should be on her "wing-nut" ideology and her alleged dearth of ideas. They reportedly cast their conversations as an incubator for talking points on television. After one member wrote that women should take "umbrage" at the idea that putting "any woman on the ticket no matter her qualifications or views" could win them over, Mother Jones' Jonathan Stein urged others to echo that point. "That's excellent! If enough people -- people on this list? -- write that the pick is sexist, you'll have the networks debating it for days. YEST Some Find Irony In Shirley Sherrod's U.S.D.A. Incident

There is a glaring irony in the wake of Shirley Sherrod's firing and subsequent reinstatement offer, say those who know her in Georgia. She lost her job in a matter of hours under the suspicion of racism, but officials in the Department of Agriculture who were found to have withheld loans from Sherrod and her husband's farming cooperative were never fired. "Discrimination happens in USDA. . . . And it's there because the agency never did deal with the people who caused it," Sherrod said Thursday morning on the "Today" show. Forecasters wanred that the edge of the tropical storm could reach the spill area by Saturday. YEST Teen Kills Family And Torches Home In Murder-Suicide

James Gordon Meek, Christina Boyle, Joe Jackson, Kevin Deutsch And Jonathan Lemire -- New York Daily News

The 14-year-old suspected of wiping out his family in a murder-suicide had a troubling fascination with fire. Staffers at Intermediate School 72 on Staten Island recommended C.J. Jones get psychiatric counseling after he set several small fires there, sources said. It was unknown if his mother, Leisha Jones, enrolled him, but it is clear that while he sometimes seemed like a happy, doting older brother, C.J. was grappling with inner demons. ...

Season 4 Of Torchwood To Be Even Darker

Ian Berriman -- SFX (UK)

Russell T Davies: "For faithful viewers you'll see the same people in the same world, following on. Though it also starts from scratch, because there's a brand new Starz audience there sitting waiting to be scooped up, new viewers coming to it. But I restarted Doctor Who in 2005 from scratch, so I know what I'm doing. I did it with Children Of Earth, actually - that practically tripled Torchwood's audience, and noone said to me that they were lost. So it's a new starting point and yet ... as a faithful viewer you do get that awful feeling when something reboots or revamps that you're not comfortable anymore, and there's none of that. It's still Gwen, it's still Jack, and hopefully more. You'll feel very comfortable with it. And there's great new American characters coming into it." ...

YEST Mad Men, Season 4 Premiere: Why We Love Don Draper

Linda Stasi -- New York Post

On the drunk-and-orderly season premiere, we find that Don is angrier than ever -- if that's possible. He's furious for paying big bucks to Betty (January Jones) while she lives with her new (yes!) husband Henry (Christopher Stanley) in their old house. He rages at the loyalists who followed him to the new agency because they aren't as clever as he is -- although, as far as I can tell, he's really not all that brilliantly clever himself. Despite all the big moves, the biggest change for me is that the gorgeous Don no longer has women flying at him like panties at a 1960s Tom Jones concert! In fact, on Sunday night, big-deal Don even accepts a blind date and hires a bondage hooker. Yet, he's still creepily appealing -- boring misogynist that he is. So, what's his appeal? Simple. Don Draper represents, in his repressed way, everything we're either not supposed to do or are even allowed to do anymore. ...

YEST Syndication May Suck The Life Out Of 'True Blood'

Susan C. Young -- NBC News

HBO hopes to sell the sexy, gore-filled series for $800,000 an episode, but it knows full well that the show, which centers on vampires, werewolves and other supernatural beings, requires considerable editing before it can go to basic cable. (Since non-premium channels rely on advertisers to make money, they need to conform to more stringent guidelines when it comes to what can be shown.) Clothing has almost become optional on "True Blood": Shape-shifter Sam runs buck-naked through the woods, man-for-hire Lafayette shucks clothes as if they were corn husks, vampire Eric revels in his timeless body and good ol' boy Jason knows where his best assets are stored. The actors are certainly comfortable in their own skins and have the modesty of nudists. But the necessary cleanup could be as extensive as a post-Katrina remodel. ...

Avandia's Future Murky After F.D.A. Panel Vote

Christine S. Moyer -- American Medical Association News

Some physician organizations are recommending that doctors make no sudden changes in their prescribing of Avandia after a Food and Drug Administration panel, for a second time, raised safety questions about the diabetes drug. However, unlike in its first review, the panel did not issue a clear recommendation to the FDA about what it should do as a result of the findings. "Don't do anything different now than you did before the [July 13-14] hearing," said Alan J. Garber, MD, PhD, treasurer of the American Assn. of Clinical Endocrinologists. He said changes might be recommended for physicians when the FDA issues a decision, which is usually based on the advisory panel's recommendation. However, observers are wondering what the FDA will decide, since the panel gave no unanimous recommendation. ...

(The linked article incorrectly states that claims about Obama's birth certificate have been discredited.) Sources Say Smackdown Of Obama By Supreme Court May Be Inevitable

Anthony G. Martin -- New York Examiner

First, there is ObamaCare, which violates the Constitutional principle barring the federal government from forcing citizens to purchase something. And no, this is not the same thing as states requiring drivers to purchase car insurance, as some of the intellectually-impaired claim. The Constitution limits FEDERAL government, not state governments, from such things. Second, sources state that the Roberts court has quietly accepted information concerning discrepancies in Obama's history that raise serious questions about his eligibility for the office of President. The charge goes far beyond the birth certificate issue. This information involves possible fraudulent use of a Social Security number in Connecticut, while Obama was a high school student in Hawaii. And that is only the tip of the iceberg. Third, several cases involving possible criminal activity, conflicts of interest, and pay-for-play cronyism could potentially land many Administration officials, if not Obama himself, in hot water with the Court. And finally, the biggie that could potentially send the entire house of cards tumbling in a free-fall is the latest revelation concerning the Obama-Holder Department of Justice and its refusal to pursue the New Black Panther Party. ...

Court Case Challenges Obama's Eligibility For Failure To Provide Proof Of Citizenship

Bob Unruh -- World Net Daily

Three judges on the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals are beginning to review a case that alleges Barack Obama is not eligible to be president - in fact, he may not even be American. The case filed was against Obama, Congress and others, just before Obama was sworn into office. The case has argued, "Under the British Nationality Act of 1948 his father was a British subject/citizen and not a United States citizen and Obama himself was a British subject/citizen at the time Obama was born. "We further contend that Obama has failed to even conclusively prove that he is at least a 'citizen of the United States' under the Fourteenth Amendment as he claims by conclusively proving that he was born in Hawaii," the arguments have claimed. The claims from Apuzzo came in opposition to government demands that the case be dismissed for lack of "standing" on the part of the plaintiffs. ...

An Inconvenient Lie

The Settled Climate Science Is Unsettled -- Again

Dr. Tim Ball -- Canada Free Press (CA)

In conversations with a physicist involved in studying the effect of nuclear explosions on the upper atmosphere I was amazed to learn he did not know the tropopause was at different altitudes between the poles and the equator. This is so fundamental that it is impossible to imagine him finding out anything meaningful about radiation distribution in the atmosphere. Some have a better understanding of the structure of the atmosphere, but it is still inadequate to draw any conclusions about what is happening to temperatures, gases, energy distributions or anything else fundamental to understanding climate change. It is also inadequate as the basis for building computer models used to predict future climate. ...

Pacific Islands Not Sinking From Global Warming

Washington Times

In a forthcoming issue of the journal Global and Planetary Change, researchers from the University of Auckland in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands Applied Geoscience Commission in Fiji documented changes in 27 vulnerable, low-lying reef islands in the Central Pacific. Using aerial photographs taken as early as 1944, the areas were carefully mapped and compared with modern satellite images. It turns out that the islands did, in fact, change over time, but they are hardly sinking. Overall, 20 grew or remained stable. The island of Funamanu, for example, expanded from 7.4 acres to 9.5 acres in size -- a 28 percent growth. Only seven islands shrunk, with the biggest percentage change occurring on Tengasu, which dropped from a tiny 1.7 acres to 1.5 acres -- a diminishment of 9,670 square feet, the size of Mr. Gore's Tennessee mansion. ...

Prepare For A Bit Of Cooling, Predicts Geologist

Dennis Avery -- Canada Free Press (CA)

"Global warming is over-at least for a few decades," geologist Don Easterbrook, professor emeritus from Western Washington University told the Heartland Institute's Fourth International Conference on Climate Change on May 19. He warned, however, us not to rejoice. Colder winters kill twice as many people as hot weather while crop production suffers from shorter growing seasons and weather-disrupted harvests. Current data seem to support Easterbrook's prediction of an end to global warming, at least for the next three decades. Since 1998, atmospheric CO2 has continued to increase-but total solar activity, as measured by satellites, has declined sharply after trending strongly, but erratically, upward for 150 years. ...

The Motive Force Behind "Climate Change"

Joseph A Olson -- Climate Realists

The vast difference between the maximum heat and minimum ice age weather cycles on the surface of the earth cannot be accounted for by any solar or atmospheric variables. In fact, there is another force that renders even short-term climate forecasts inaccurate. That force is the enormous Geo-Nuclear, heat producing fission reactions of the heavy elements that form the earth's core. Mankind can neither predict nor control this force and is just as powerless to control the volcanoes, earthquakes and ice ages that are the results of variations in this geo-nuclear force. The 11,000 degree F temperature at the earth's core is not caused by gravity, by solar radiation or by atmospheric insulation. Legislative efforts to modify weather with miniscule changes of parts per million of carbon dioxide, a benign, life giving molecule, will soon be recognized as the most naïve misinterpretation of earth science since the world was flat. ...

James Lovelock, Who Developed The Gaia Theory, Says "Democracy Must Be Put On Hold" To Prevent Climate Change

Leo Hickman -- Guardian (UK)

Humans are too stupid to prevent climate change from radically impacting on our lives over the coming decades. This is the stark conclusion of James Lovelock, the globally respected environmental thinker and independent scientist who developed the Gaia theory. "I don't think we're yet evolved to the point where we're clever enough to handle a complex a situation as climate change," said Lovelock in his first in-depth interview since the theft of the UEA emails last November. "The inertia of humans is so huge that you can't really do anything meaningful." One of the main obstructions to meaningful action is "modern democracy", he added. "Even the best democracies agree that when a major war approaches, democracy must be put on hold for the time being. I have a feeling that climate change may be an issue as severe as a war. It may be necessary to put democracy on hold for a while." ...

Global-Warming Alarmism Dying A Slow Death

Alex Newman -- New American Magazine

The rapid loss of public credibility over all the errors has also accompanied numerous calls by prominent voices for official inquiries and even criminal investigations. Several universities involved have already launched reviews. And even previous IPCC chief Professor Robert Watson, for example, is calling for a probe to investigate "warming bias" by the UN panel. "The mistakes all appear to have gone in the direction of making it seem like climate change is more serious by overstating the impact. That is worrying," he told the U.K. Times Online. "The IPCC needs to look at this trend in the errors and ask why it happened." The UN will indeed launch an "independent" inquiry, but critics generally expect a coverup. U.S. Senator James Inhofe (R-Okla.) went further, proposing criminal investigations to determine if alarmists violated any laws. A Senate report produced for Inhofe's Environment and Public Works Committee concluded that, among other problems, "scientists involved in the CRU controversy violated fundamental ethical principles governing taxpayer-funded research and, in some cases, may have violated federal laws." Similarly, British authorities were investigating possible criminal activity by Climategate scientists who refused to provide documents and data under lawful Freedom of Information requests. The scientists may reportedly escape prosecution under the FOI law because of a six-month statute of limitations. ...

 We All Need Help

By Mitchell Goldstein

It is no secret. We all move forward more quickly with the help of others. It certainly helps if you were born into wealth, but America is full of "self made" stories. And, the next generation will have many women to emulate. The addition of woman to the ranks of business is a growing trend. The "sisterhood" has caught on quickly, by joining the chambers of commerce, by taking part in politics, by joining mentoring groups, and creating their own "good ole girls networks." We do not live in a vacuum. All around us are people, situations, jobs, desires, futures, stresses, goals, needs, habits, etc. How do we make sense of all this and move ourselves forward?

Priests In Gay Clubs Further Embarrass Catholic Church

Digital Journal

Video AND TEXT. Catholic priests in Rome are said to be making nocturnal visits to gay bars, further embarrassing a church enmeshed in one of the biggest sex scandals in ecclesiastical history. According to Euronews.net, "Alleged homosexual encounters involving three clerics are captured on camera in an undercover report by the conservative Panorama magazine." Panorama, which is owned by the Italian prime minister and media magnate Silvio Berlusconi, says the church has reacted by asking gay priests to come out of the closet and then leave the priesthood. ...

U.S.-South Korean Naval Exercises Draw Nuclear Threat From North

Choe Sang-Hun -- New York Times

The exercises this week are the first in what is scheduled to be a series of joint U.S.-South Korean maneuvers over the coming months. U.S. officials warned last week that a power struggle over who will succeed the ailing North Korean leader, Kim Jong Il, might prompt the North to attempt further military provocations. On Saturday, North Korea vowed to start a "sacred war" against the U.S. and South Korea at "any time necessary" to counter their "largest-ever nuclear war exercises" with its own "powerful nuclear deterrence." ...

The Damning New Evidence That Points To A Cover-Up By Tony Blair's Government In The Death Of Weapons Expert Dr. David Kelly

Miles Goslett And Stephen Frost -- Daily Mail (UK)

Suspicions of foul play still hang heavy over the death of weapons expert Dr David Kelly, whose body was found seven years ago next month in one of the most notorious episodes of Tony Blair's premiership. New revelations include the ambiguous nature of the wording on Dr Kelly's death certificate; the existence of an anonymous letter which says his colleagues were warned to stay away from his funeral; and an extraordinary claim that the wallpaper at Dr Kelly's home was stripped by police in the hours after he was reported missing, but before his body was found. No fingerprints found on the knife with which he allegedly killed himself, even though he wore no gloves. ...

Prince Andrew Hosted V.I.P. Guest From Libya As Prime Minister Cameron Prepared To Meet Obama Over Lockerbie Storm

Stephen Wright -- Daily Mail (UK)

Relatives of the 270 who died in the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 are likely to be puzzled by the decision to afford VIP status to Mr Obeidi, the Libyan secretary general for public security. He insists Libya had 'no connection' with the Lockerbie bombing and claims Megrahi was the 'victim of a huge international conspiracy'. The Libyan minister's views are at odds with those of Mr Cameron, who told Barack Obama last Tuesday that he believed Megrahi should have died behind bars in Britain. After the two held their first talks at the White House, President Obama demanded full cooperation from Britain with a Senate inquiry into the affair. ...

Chavez Threatens U.S. Oil Cut In Colombia Dispute

Frank Jack Daniel -- Reuters

A vocal and frequent critic of the United States, Chavez broke off diplomatic relations with Colombia last week over the claims by the outgoing government of President Alvaro Uribe, a close U.S. ally. Chavez, a leftist who says Washington is behind the charges, has never carried out previous threats to cut oil supplies to the United States, Venezuela's main customer. "If there was any armed aggression against Venezuela from Colombian territory or from anywhere else, promoted by the Yankee empire, we would suspend oil shipments to the United States, even if we have to eat stones here," he said. ...

YEST Canada Set To End Affirmative Action In Hiring For Federal Government Jobs

Nick Aveling -- National Post (CA)

Cabinet ministers Stockwell Day and Jason Kenney announced the review of the Public Service Employment Act, along with any related practices and policies, on Thursday. "While we support diversity in the public service, we want to ensure that no Canadian is barred from opportunities in the public service based on race or ethnicity," Mr. Day, the Treasury Board President, said in a statement. Mr. Kenney, meanwhile, was more blunt in his calls for a meritocracy. "I strongly agree with the objective of creating a public service that reflects the diversity of Canada, and with fair measures designed to reach that goal. But we must ensure that all Canadians have an equal opportunity to work for their government based on merit, regardless of race or ethnicity," said the Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism. ...

YEST 'Inception' Plays Intelligent Tricks With Dreams

Christopher Smith -- Bangor Daily News

The new Christopher Nolan movie, "Inception," is a trick, but it isn't a gimmick. The film, which Nolan based on his own script, offers moviegoers something unusual during the summer movie season - intelligence targeted at adults. The movie is complex, it's ambitious, it's daring in how it isolates viewers by piling on the layers, and it's cunning in how it draws them back in when those layers suddenly come together. This is a movie that turns in on itself - and then in on itself again - until what you're left with is a kind of compelling confusion of ideas that oddly makes sense as the movie expands into its nearly 2.5 hour running time. If you think "Lost" was complicated, let's just say it's kitten chow when compared to this. ...

Audio March Report Podcast

News and Opinion Presented by Robert Jay March

44:29. Recorded
Monday, June 7, 2010
TOPICS DISCUSSED:

The Kramdenation of Barack Obama

In 2009, Barack Obama issued this Memorandum for the Heads of Executive Departments and Agencies of the Federal Government, which said, in part: "My Administration is committed to creating an unprecedented level of openness in Government. We will work together to ensure the public trust, and establish a system of transparency, public participation, and collaboration. Openness will strengthen our democracy and promote efficiency and effectiveness in Government." That from the largest recipient of campaign funds from British Petrolium, who were repaid with lax oversight and regulatory exemptions that led to the Gulf Of Mexico Oil Spill. In this podcast, Robert Jay March discusses the attempts to bribe Joe Sestak and Andrew Romanoff out of their respective primaries, contrasting this with the promises of openness and transparency made by Barack Obama while he was running, and in the early days of his occupancy of the White House. Paraphrasing Obama's response to the scandal: Hamena, hamena, hamena.

Liar's Poker and Obama's 'Tell'

What did Obama know and when did he know it? We can expect to hear that question repeated over and over again, and this time without the news blackout imposed by all the networks, including Fox News, on the questions about Obama's birth certificate

Barack Obama had promised transparency in governance, but has proved himself to be just another practitioner of deep-dish Chicago politics: cheesy, with a thick crust. His credibility had apparently hit bottom with his handling of the BP oil spill, coupled with the revelation that Obama was the largest recipient of campaign contributions from BP, but this latest revelation has pushed it into the sub-basement. When we first inaugurated the Obamalot section of MarchReport.com on January 27, 2009, with a logo containing the phrase "Transparency Since 2009 (Except When We're Opaque)," we got the expected protests that proclaimed the new messiah would be open about everything. Of course, we knew better, having already seen his duplicity regarding his legal qualifications to serve as President. It was not exactly a stretch to visualize how he would conduct himself in office, and he has lived down to our expectations.

On February 18, 2010, Rep. Joe Sestak (D-PA) revealed on Comcast's Larry Kane Show that the White House had offered him a job to induce him to withdraw from the primary race against turncoat former Republican Senator Arlen Specter, who had switched parties in order to assure his re-election. It's interesting to note that the story, which is a public relations nightmare for Obama, was broken on a Comcast cable show, in that it is Comcast that is buying NBC (including MSNBC). Does this presage a change of direction for MSNBC, which to date has been little more than a public relations service for Obama?

It was rumored that Sestak, a retired naval Admiral, had been offered the position of Secretary of the Navy in violation of Title 18 USC §211, "Acceptance or solicitation to obtain appointive public office," Title 18 USC §595 "Interference by administrative employees of Federal, State, or Territorial Governments," and Title 18 USC § 600 "Promise of employment or other benefit for political activity." Only the President (or, in this case, the guy who plays one on T.V.) could have authorized such an offer, since it is he who makes such appointments. This is an impeachable offense, being a "high crime or misdemeanor," which at the time of the drafting of the Constitution, meant a crime or misdemeanor that the offender would ordinarily have been spared the consequences of, by virtue of his high position.

On April 21, 2010, Rep. Darrell Issa of California, the top ranking Republican Member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, sent a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder requesting the appointment of a Special Prosecutor to investigate the Sestak bribe attempt. To date, there has been no such appointment.

On the May 23 edition of Face The Nation, Sestak again confirmed the job offer, but would not give any details.

The range of human experiences is quite limited, and the same events keep repeating themselves over and over again, with a different cast of characters, much like a Hollywood re-make. The Sestak affair is eerily reminiscent of a Gus Van Sant re-make of the Watergate crisis. Much like Van Sant's color remake of Psycho, it's the same script replayed with lesser actors. Just as during the Nixon administration, and several times since, The White House has investigated itself, assuring us that nothing improper has happened; and, just as happened during the Nixon years, very few are buying it. Clearly, a special prosecutor or independent counsel needs to be appointed.

Modern-day reporters are inherently lazy, being closer to game-show hosts than the ink-stained wretches of yore, and like stories that present themselves already written; no wearing out shoe leather, or even using up cell-phone minutes nowadays. No press-pass sticking up out of their well-worn hat brim: that might muss their well-coifed hair. Regardless of how much they have covered up for Obama thus far, there is now blood in the water, and if it bleeds, it leads.

They started by quizzing his press secretary, Robert Gibbs, who hemmed and hawed, being very careful to say nothing that could get him indicted as a co-conspirator. Then they asked Obama, who did his best impression of Ralph Kramden saying, "Hamena, Hamena, Hamena." Watch the video in the immediately preceding link, and take note of Obama's body language. Stiff as a board, saucer eyed, unblinkingly staring at Alice Kramden ... I mean, Major Garrett.

At least Richard Nixon had the guts to look right into the camera and lie. Just as Obama did when he fumbled the Inauguration oath...

... his "Tell" betrays him. Somewhere inside him, there is the awareness that he is doing wrong. Somewhere inside him, there is the desire to get caught, and that force is struggling to find it's way to the surface, to burst forth as if from John Hurt's chest.

The song "The Gambler," popularized by Kenny Rogers, contains these lyrics: "Son, I've made my life out of readin' people's faces, / And knowin' what their cards were by the way they held their eyes. / So if you don't mind my sayin', I can see you're out of aces."

You got to know when to hold 'em, and know when to fold em. Hopefully, this time the press, which has horribly betrayed us thus far, will force him to show his hole card and surrender his chips. That said, you never count your money when you're sittin' at the table.

Why Obama Must Be Impeached

Kelly O'Connell -- Canada Free Press (CA)

Is there a single American who secretly thinks Obama's up to the task of the presidency? Or, does anyone believe Barack does not take bad situations and worsen them to magnify his power? These are rhetorical questions, of course. The only way Barack is an acceptable president is if you're an opponent of America's greatest achievements. Therefore, if you support Obama it means you want to revolutionize the US. But no democratic country knowingly elects leaders to debase their country, give away power, bankrupt the treasury, incorporate socialism, dissolve constitutional rights, cripple capitalism, and menace every citizen with reckless policies. That would be ridiculous and anti-American. Barack has done all these things. Therefore, he must be impeached. ...

The Rationer-In-Chief

Conn Carroll -- Heritage Foundation

The fact that the White House chose to empower Dr. Donald Berwick to be the administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS is the agency that runs the Medicare and Medicaid programs) by recess appointment is particularly audacious. The recess appointment power was intended to be used for occasions when the Senate is out for months at a time. The Senate is currently out of session for just 11 days. Worse, the Senate majority has never even scheduled a hearing so that Dr. Berwick's rationing views could be given an "open" forum. In fact, Dr. Berwick has not even returned Senators' written questionnaires. The White House defends the move by claiming "there's no time to waste with Washington game-playing." But then why did the Obama administration wait until April 2010, a full 15 months after President Obama was sworn into office, to nominate Dr. Berwick? Is it because they did not want Dr. Berwick's well known and public support for rationing health care to affect the debate over Obamacare ...

Barack Obama's 'Politics As Usual' Revealed By Rod Blagojevich Trial

Toby Harnden -- Telegraph (UK)

Although "Blago", the foul-mouthed bouffant buffoon, is the main attraction of the Chicago production, the former Illinois governor's reluctant co-star is Barack Obama. He forms part of the proceedings each day even though the judge has spared him a personal experience. Blago had the power to appoint a new Senator when the seat was vacated because of Obama's presidential election victory in November 2008. That choice, the trial has confirmed, was Valerie Jarrett, who now rejoices in the title of senior White House adviser and Assistant to the President for Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs. Her qualification to be a Senator? Jarrett was a long-time personal friend of Obama and his wife Michelle and that seemed to be qualification enough for the man about to enter the White House. Obama's incoming chief of staff Rahm Emanuel spoke to John Wyma, a lobbyist, who then telephoned Blago's right-hand man John Harris to communicate that "the president-elect would be very pleased if you appointed Valerie and he would be, uh, thankful and appreciative." ...

Another Crisis Not Wasted

Klaus Rohrich -- Canada Free Press (CA)

Following the Rahm Emanuel playbook, Barack Obama is losing no time in taking full advantage of the Gulf oil spill crisis to further his far left agenda. When he was addressing the nation from the oval office last week his tone and demeanor were combative, as his speech was filled with words and phrases that alluded to warfare. Obama's speech wasn't so much about the Gulf's environmental disaster as it was about laying the groundwork to get a draconian cap and trade law passed through Congress, one that would relegate America to the level of a third-world country by raising the cost of living to such an extent that suicide might be a more attractive financial strategy. ...

Why Obamacare Is Unconstitutional

Van Irion -- Desert Conservative

In 1919, the regulation of a drug, alcohol, required a Constitutional amendment to be ratified by the States. Yet, today we have the FDA which regulates every "prescription" drug and the DEA which regulates every "illegal" drug. So how did we go from requiring a Constitutional amendment to regulate just one drug, to multiple Federal agencies that regulate drugs without any Constitutional amendment whatsoever? During the presidency of FDR, the Supreme Court drastically changed the interpretation of the Commerce Clause to empower Congress to regulate Commerce within the States. For the prior 150 years, the Supreme Court interpreted the Commerce clause to prevent unfair competition between the States. For the past 73 years, Congress has viewed the precedent from the FDR court as Constitutional authority to regulate whatever they please. ...

Obama Asks America To Commit Suicide

Alan Caruba -- Canada Free Press (CA)

Obama cited China as a nation pursuing "clean energy", but the he said nothing of the new coal-fired plants to generate electricity that China has been opening every week in recent years and will continue to do in the years ahead. He did not mention that China is literally drilling for oil in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Cuba. Like every modern nation, China needs oil. Coal provides fifty percent of our electricity and it could provide even more; a source that could last for centuries, except that the Obama administration is doing everything it can to thwart the building of new coal-fired plants, to shut down coal mining operations. We are the Saudi Arabia of coal, yet this administration has declared war on the most abundant source of energy we have in America. ...

Stuck On Stupid

Christopher Chantrill -- American Thinker

The big problem for Obama is that the Gulf oil spill is his fourth major mistake. The first big mistake was the $787-billion stimulus package. The second was the appeasement of thug dictators, Islamist and leftist. The third mistake was ObamaCare. The fourth is the Gulf. The horrifying thing is that we Americans can't afford all these mistakes. We can't afford a "president" stuck on stupid. ...

Obama, The Progressive Marxist Avenger

Sandy Stringfellow -- Canada Free Press (CA)

When one looks carefully at the company with which Obama surrounds himself, and the Progressive Marxist agenda they share, it's entirely reasonable to be not only suspicious, but genuinely afraid of their collective capacity for inflicting a crippling and permanent level of damage to our glorious republic. This would have to include the possibility of outright destruction. In fact, many observers would argue that is precisely the goal. So Obama the Progressive marches on, in all of his ignominious glory, undeterred in his mission to unite the world in equality of tyranny, starvation, death, and destruction. ...

When "not illegal" is the best thing that the White House can say about the behavior of the president's top aides, it's not a good sign. But the Obama administration finds itself holding the sleazy-but-legal line on deals Rahm Emanuel and his lieutenant, Jim Messina, tried to cut to keep Democrats Joe Sestak and Andrew Romanoff from taking on the national party's preferred candidates in Senate primaries. In both cases, the efforts failed. ...

Obama Vs. Israel

Abraham Foxman -- Jerusalem Post (IL)

The US has decided to support a resolution at the UN Nonproliferation conference which specifically calls on Israel to open up its nuclear facilities and join the NPT treaty. What does this decision say about the Obama administration's assumptions and directions regarding Israel? The administration is reportedly trying to reassure Israel that if any similar resolution comes to the Security Council, it will veto it. Still, another element in the historic relationship between the two countries has been eviscerated. What is becoming a pattern is that when the administration looks at America's broader interests, it too often chooses to see the Israeli position as undermining those interests. ...

Head Of Marxist-Led Institute Joins Obama Team

Aaron Klein -- World Net Daily

The policy director at a George Soros-funded, Marxist-founded organization calling itself Free Press has just taken a key State Department position, WND has learned. Free Press Policy Director Ben Scott has been named a policy adviser for innovation at the State Department. Free Press is a well-known advocate of government intervention in the Internet. ...

America Is In Trouble, And Obama Can't Be Counted On To Save Her

Michael Goodwin -- FOX News

Barack Obama is the backward man. Teddy Roosevelt's advice to "speak softly and carry a big stick" was meant as a guide to successful foreign relations. Obama has completely muddled the message. He speaks softly to foreign adversaries and uses the big stick on American dissenters. Iran and Syria are wooed endlessly with carrots, apologies and promises of grand bargains. They respond with taunts and threats and pay no penalty. North Korea sinks a South Korean ship, and our secretary of state says it means no more business as usual. That's an admission it has been business as usual even after the loony kingdom tested nukes. The Mexican president comes to Washington and berates American citizens for expressing their views through the democratic process, and Obama shamefully nods in agreement. A State Department aide apologizes to China -- to China! -- about our treatment of illegal immigrants. ...

Where Professors Rule, Life Is Cruel

Stuart Schwartz -- American Thinker

Welcome to government by professor. Assorted faculty of Ivy League schools have come together to form an administration with the least real-world and most academic experience of any in modern times, the American Enterprise Institute notes. And so we have a government of scolds, lecturers, and bullies, arrogant academics cheered on by mainstream media when they take a "paddle" to average citizens and taxpayers. Witness the latest addition to the administration's professorial ranks: Dr. Donald Berwick, the Harvard Medical School professor picked to head the Medicare program. Of course, his knowledge of senior health care is academic, having never actually treated seniors. In Cambridge and Hyde Park (University of Chicago) and Berkeley, they think transforming thoughts about "health outcomes"; in the rest of America, it is called "death panels." ...

Barack Obama's Verbal Trickery

Kelly O'Connell -- Canada Free Press (CA)

Political movements, in particular, traffic in purposeful verbal trickery. In fact, some especially depend upon fallacies to drive their message since their essential convictions are defective or even diseased. Such groups as the Nazis, Fascists and Communists immediately spring to mind here. Barack Obama peppers his rhetoric with a veritable buffet of verbal trickery. But why? Speakers do not mislead unless they sense an inability to otherwise persuade their audience. This is a short list of some of the most persistent members of this false-argument tsunami. ...

Stories You May Have Missed In Our Previous Issues

At the request of some of our readers, discerning and literate bunch that you all are, commencing with the May 1, 2008 issue we began archiving the March Report in a form suitable for presentation. Be advised that some of the links to external sites on the archived pages will have gone dead. Morte. Kaputski. That being the case, archives will be deleted, or replaced with an image of the headline area only, as the page itself becomes useless (assuming that it wasn't to begin with, which may be presumptuous in and of itself).

Rants & Raves from Our Readers

A reader who wishes to remain anonymous sent in this criticism:

Mr. March, You linked the video of Hillary Clinton having what has been referred to as an 'outburst' on your site, yet, you did not explain the context. You omitted the truth and presented the situation as another crazy Clinton moment. You not only misportrayed the situation, you lost an opportunity to share/address the plight of women who have no rights in their country. I have been a long time reader of your March Report and have shared the Report with many people. I wrote to you addressing the Clinton video and have seen no retraction or explanation. I won't be referring anyone to this page anymore. My belief and trust that you maintain objectivity and research all sides has been permanently altered recently. Consevative or not, you have always seemed to work at being fair and true to journalism. I now am seeing you differently.

    Robert Jay March Responds:

This reader has mischaracterized the report. In fact, we went out of way to add clarity to the situation. The copy proved by WMAQ-TV, the televsion station which provide the report through one of our syndicators, said "A Congolese university student seems to presume that Bill Clinton's opinion is more important than the current Secretary of State's." In order to portray the situation accurately, we rewrote the copy to read as follows (emphasis added): "As a result of a translator's error, a Congolese university student appears to presume that Bill Clinton's opinion is more important than the current Secretary of State's. Hillary explodes, and hilarity ensues. Oh, those wacky, wacky Clintons." That was all the information that was available on August 11, 2009, when we ran the story. Witty retort aside, we went out of our way to clarify the report. Further details from the State Department and the White House did not become available until the following day.

Another reader, who wish to be referred to by the nom de plume "Needles," has an unusual take on the Certifi-Gate crisis:

The birthers need to step back and consider the consequences of their actions. If Mr. Obama were to be declared ineligible, there are several possible outcomes. They could remove him from office and install Joe Biden as President. The argument would be made that if Mr. Obama was not eligible to run for President, then the ticket is invalid as well and Joe Biden should not be Vice President. The next person in the order of succession would be Speaker of the House; Nancy Pelosi. Because no eligible candidate received a majority of electoral votes, the selection of the President could be thrown into the House. Speaker Nancy Pelosi, would then be king-maker. The choices are Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi or someone Nancy Pelosi picks. Maybe it is best to leave the birth certificate matter alone.

    Robert Jay March Responds:

Mr. Obama being declared ineligible does not legally invalidate Biden's election, provided he is qualified. Even if it did, the Constitution is too important to ignore; it is all that separates us from tyranny. Regardless of the consequences, if in fact Mr. Obama is ineligible, he must be removed. That said, all we have thus far is the preponderance of evidence leading to a likely conclusion, not conclusive facts. That is why the revelation of the long-form birth certificate is so important.

Finally, a third reader who wish to be referred to by the nom de plume "unihawker," writes:

Dear Mr. March, I was watching TV the other night and they showed a clip of Obama in Kenya during his trip there during the campaign. I am not sure if it was just some Freudian slip or not, but he said as he was waiving to the people greeting him, "Thank you, it is great to be back home". My question was, If he was not born in that country why would he call it home?

    Robert Jay March Responds:

Good question, for which I have no answer. If this report is correct, it is yet another contribution to the preponderance of evidence that implies Mr. Obama is ineligible. A copy of the long form birth certificate would cost Mr. Obama $12; thus far he has spent $1.3 Million to avoid producing it. As in any investigation, follow the money: in this case, what money is being spent on to conceal.
