The Struggle For Tibet

After nearly half a century of Chine occupation of Tibet, riots on an unprecedented scale occurred not only in the Tibetan Administrative Region (TAR), but also in parts of China with substantial Tibetan populations. Prior to what has come to be known as the March Incident of 2008, Tibetan protests had largely been limited to areas within TAR proper. How can we explain the spontaneous -- and violent -- uprising that shocked the world months before the Beijing Olympics and invited an ironfisted crackdown by the Chinese authorities? The answer is the culminating The Struggle for Tibet, a collection of articles written by Tibetan academic Tsering Shakya and the Chinese intellectual Wang Lixiong. In what often reads like a dialogue between the two authors, the book explores the question of Tibetan identity, religion, assimilation and resistance from the perspective of Tibetans.

Peddling Peril: How The Secret Nuclear Trade Arms America's Enemies

A great deal has been written about Pakistani metallurgist A.Q. Khan and his collaborators, but I have never found an account as detailed as the one in "Peddling Peril: How the Secret Nuclear Trade Arms America's Enemies," by the nuclear armaments expert David Albright. Albright holds master's degrees in physics and mathematics and has taught physics. For five years-between 1992 and 1997-he was part of the International Atomic Energy Agency's Action Team and in that capacity he spent time as a weapons inspector in Iraq. In 1993, he founded the Institute for Science and International Security, a nonprofit research organization based in Washington, D.C., of which he is president. In short, Albright is a perfect person to write a book like this.

A political brouhaha over the political tactics erupted last Friday when the White House acknowledged after weeks of questions that chief of staff Rahm Emanuel last year asked former president Bill Clinton to try to persuade Rep. Joe Sestak not to run in a Democratic primary against Sen. Arlen Specter. Clinton suggested that Sestak could take an unpaid position on a federal advisory board, which would help boost his stature in the House, instead of running for the Senate. On Thursday, the White House acknowledged trying to influence a race in Colorado as well. This time, deputy chief of staff Jim Messina suggested to former Colorado House speaker Andrew Romanoff that he seek one of three possible government jobs instead of running for the Senate in a Democratic primary against incumbent Michael Bennet. ...

White House Counsel Robert Bauer's memo detailing the White House's version of events in the case of Pennsylvania Democratic Senate nominee Joe Sestak raises far more questions than it answers. Released last Friday, at the beginning of both a three-day holiday weekend and a weeklong Congressional recess, the memo was intended to be the Obama administration's last word on the matter. But the memo's self-serving explanation and lack of detail have turned a minor annoyance for the administration into a full fledged Washington scandal, virtually guaranteeing that there will be much more written and said about Sestak, the administration's interference in the Pennsylvania Senate primary, and what looks to be a politically motivated cover up. ...

On what arguably should have been the worst day of their lives -- the start of his public corruption trial -- Rod and Patti Blagojevich kept on smiling. "Today begins a process to correct a terrible injustice that's been done to my husband, our family and the people of Illinois," Patti Blagojevich told a throng of reporters in the lobby, the former governor at her side. "My husband is an honest man, and I know that he's innocent. Thank you." ...

 Gov. Bobby Jindal made an impassioned plea Wednesday for the federal government to approve a plan to build six sand berms to protect Louisiana's wetlands. Minutes later he got his wish. ...

Heading into midterm elections that threaten his party's control of Congress, Barack Obama is struggling with an unending environmental catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico that makes it almost impossible to stick with his agenda. This was supposed to be the season when Obama could make jobs and the economy his central focus: working to convince a skeptical public that he and his allies in Congress are addressing what polls show to be voters' No. 1 concern. But the gulf oil spill has intruded on the administration's plans. ...

Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), Lamar Smith (R-Texas) and James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) called for the release of any documents or records relating to allegations that the Obama administration offered a job to Rep. Joe Sestak (D-Pa.) last year if he agreed to not run for the Democratic Senate nomination against incumbent Arlen Specter. ...

The Obama administration dangled the possibility of a government job for former Colorado House Speaker Andrew Romanoff last year in hopes he would forgo a challenge to Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet, officials said Wednesday, just days after the White House admitted orchestrating a job offer in the Pennsylvania Senate race. The new revelation of a possible political trade again called into question Barack Obama's repeated promises to run an open government that was above back room deals.The Colorado episode follows a similar controversy in Pennsylvania. An embarrassed White House admitted last Friday that it turned to former President Bill Clinton last year to approach Rep. Joe Sestak about backing out of the primary in favor of an unpaid position on a federal advisory board. ...

The attorneys close to the case spoke on condition of anonymity, saying Emanuel's subpoena was not public. Both White House officials also spoke on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation. If Emanuel did take the witness stand, he might be asked about what effort if any the White House had made to get Blagojevich to appoint Jarrett to the Senate seat. ...

 Police in Orange County, Calif. say a 26-year-old man is being held on charges that he dismembered his neighbor, Samuel Herr, then fatally shot Herr's friend last month. Authorities believe the killings were part of murder for profit plot. ...

 The National Center for Atmospheric Research has released this animation, depicting how wide the oil spill may spread if the loop current in the Gulf of Mexico is in a typical configuration. Scientist Synte Peacock helped developed the computer model. ...

Under thunderous skies here on the Louisiana coast, there's a warning of a new threat to the desperate efforts to fight the leaking oil. For the past two days the largest clean-up base, at the port of Venice, has been paralysed by a rolling series of electrical storms. And the head of the US Coast Guard fears worse is to come -- including abandoning operations to stem the leak -- if hurricanes strike as forecast. ...

Technicians using robotic submarines Thursday guided a cap to the top of the seafloor well spewing oil into the Gulf of Mexico, BP officials said. Oil and natural gas kept discharging from the well as engineers tried to fit the cap onto the opening about 10 p.m. EDT. BP Chief Executive Officer Tony Hayward said Thursday the effort to cap the well had reached a "milestone" when engineers managed to slice of the top of the damaged riser pipe -- making it possible for the dome to be lowered into place. ...

 A woman who has a restraining order against John Mark Karr, the man who falsely claimed to have murdered JonBenet Ramsey, said Wednesday the former suspect is living as a woman and trying to form a cult of little girls to have sex with him. ...

In 2006, Karr claimed he killed 6-year-old beauty-pageant contestant JonBenet Ramsey in her Colorado home in 1996. Boulder police later ruled him out as a suspect. 19-year-old Samantha Spiegel says she was infatuated with Karr from a young age. "All the kids were in love with Mr. Karr," she said, adding that she would have "killed for him." ...

The oil giant BP Chief Executive Officer Tony Hayward runs has spent quite a bit of time and money lately apologizing. Hayward himself was apologizing Sunday when he made the comment about his life. Baffled police were trying on Thursday to work out why a quiet taxi driver gunned down 12 people around England's serene Lake District, as Britain debated how to prevent a repeat of its worst rampage for years. Derrick Bird's shooting spree on Wednesday through sleepy towns, villages and beautiful countryside in one of Britain's top tourist spots stunned locals and the entire country, and left authorities grappling for answers. While the 52-year-old, who was later found dead in the remote Eskdale valley after apparently turning one of his guns on himself, seemed to know some of his victims while others appeared to have been strangers, shot dead at random during a three-hour spree. ...

 This weekend marked the five year anniversary of the disappearance of Natalee Holloway. The Atlanta, GA private investigator hired by Holloway's family to help find the truth said Wednesday that he hopes this latest case involving Joran van der Sloot will take them in the right direction. ...

"We have information that he's in Chile (and) we'll make use of international treaties to catch him," Cesar Guardia, head of the Peruvian police crimes unit, told a local radio station. The Dutch foreign ministry said Interpol had issued an international arrest warrant for Mr Van der Sloot. Mr van der Sloot is believed to have entered Peru on May 14 to play in a poker tournament. ...

 Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defends Israel's attack on a Gaza aid ship, saying it was full of terror supporters. ...

The allegation came as Turkish newspapers reported that three of the four Turks killed in the onslaught had declared their readiness to become martyrs. "I am going to be a martyr. I dreamed about it," Ali Haider Banjinin, 39, from Kurdistan, told his family before leaving to join the flotilla, according to one report. The brother-in-law of retired engineer Ibrahim Bilgen, 61, told another paper that "martyrdom suited him very much. Allah gave him a death he desired." A third Turkish casualty, Ali Akbar Yertilmis, a father of four from Ankara, had "dreamt of becoming a martyr", a friend was quoted as saying. "Roughly 40 people on board were jihadis who came for violence," a government official said. "They were preparing to attack, to kill and to be killed." The boat was carrying more than 600 passengers, around half of them Turkish nationals. ...

The High Court outright rejected Thursday suits filed this week by the rightist and leftist camps over the flotilla raid at sea. In the ruling, which is signed by Supreme Court President Dorit Beinish, it is written, "The soldiers were forced to respond in order to defend their lives. Unfortunately, the action ended, as was not to be expected, with the loss of lives. Nine people were killed and soldiers and flotilla participants were wounded. The action ended with the flotilla being stopped, its passengers removed and detained and Israel." The suits filed by the leftist organizations asked that the High Court deem that the action was carried out with jurisdiction, that the detainees be released, and their details published. ...

A judge ordered 13 former Mexican National Migration Institute, or INM, agents jailed pending trial on human-trafficking charges, the Attorney General's Office said Wednesday. The INM has acknowledged that corrupt agents are involved in crimes of this type and has vowed to prosecute them. The Caribbean resort city of Cancun, whose beaches draw tourists from around the world, is apparently the entry point for illegal Cuban immigrants bound for the United States. ...

A reader who wishes to remain anonymous sent in this criticism:

Mr. March, You linked the video of Hillary Clinton having what has been referred to as an 'outburst' on your site, yet, you did not explain the context. You omitted the truth and presented the situation as another crazy Clinton moment. You not only misportrayed the situation, you lost an opportunity to share/address the plight of women who have no rights in their country. I have been a long time reader of your March Report and have shared the Report with many people. I wrote to you addressing the Clinton video and have seen no retraction or explanation. I won't be referring anyone to this page anymore. My belief and trust that you maintain objectivity and research all sides has been permanently altered recently. Consevative or not, you have always seemed to work at being fair and true to journalism. I now am seeing you differently.

Robert Jay March Responds:

This reader has mischaracterized the report. In fact, we went out of way to add clarity to the situation. The copy proved by WMAQ-TV, the televsion station which provide the report through one of our syndicators, said "A Congolese university student seems to presume that Bill Clinton's opinion is more important than the current Secretary of State's." In order to portray the situation accurately, we rewrote the copy to read as follows (emphasis added): "As a result of a translator's error, a Congolese university student appears to presume that Bill Clinton's opinion is more important than the current Secretary of State's. Hillary explodes, and hilarity ensues. Oh, those wacky, wacky Clintons." That was all the information that was available on August 11, 2009, when we ran the story. Witty retort aside, we went out of our way to clarify the report. Further details from the State Department and the White House did not become available until the following day.

Another reader, who wish to be referred to by the nom de plume "Needles," has an unusual take on the Certifi-Gate crisis:

The birthers need to step back and consider the consequences of their actions. If Mr. Obama were to be declared ineligible, there are several possible outcomes. They could remove him from office and install Joe Biden as President. The argument would be made that if Mr. Obama was not eligible to run for President, then the ticket is invalid as well and Joe Biden should not be Vice President. The next person in the order of succession would be Speaker of the House; Nancy Pelosi. Because no eligible candidate received a majority of electoral votes, the selection of the President could be thrown into the House. Speaker Nancy Pelosi, would then be king-maker. The choices are Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi or someone Nancy Pelosi picks. Maybe it is best to leave the birth certificate matter alone.

Robert Jay March Responds:

Mr. Obama being declared ineligible does not legally invalidate Biden's election, provided he is qualified. Even if it did, the Constitution is too important to ignore; it is all that separates us from tyranny. Regardless of the consequences, if in fact Mr. Obama is ineligible, he must be removed. That said, all we have thus far is the preponderance of evidence leading to a likely conclusion, not conclusive facts. That is why the revelation of the long-form birth certificate is so important.

Finally, a third reader who wish to be referred to by the nom de plume "unihawker," writes:

Dear Mr. March, I was watching TV the other night and they showed a clip of Obama in Kenya during his trip there during the campaign. I am not sure if it was just some Freudian slip or not, but he said as he was waiving to the people greeting him, "Thank you, it is great to be back home". My question was, If he was not born in that country why would he call it home?

Robert Jay March Responds:

Good question, for which I have no answer. If this report is correct, it is yet another contribution to the preponderance of evidence that implies Mr. Obama is ineligible. A copy of the long form birth certificate would cost Mr. Obama $12; thus far he has spent $1.3 Million to avoid producing it. As in any investigation, follow the money: in this case, what money is being spent on to conceal.
